Saint & Greavsie (16th December 1989)

Спорт

Thanks to SteveW for this and the description below:
Saint & Greavsie was a popular ITV programme presented by ex-footballers Ian St. John and Jimmy Greaves which ran from 1985 to 1992. Previously the duo had presented "On the Ball" in the World of Sport show.
Although Greaves and St. John had been contemporaries in the 1960s football world, they had never played for the same club and were English and Scottish respectively. However, a bond was quickly struck up and a long-running partnership soon began. Greaves had only recently won his battle against alcoholism when he began co-presenting but he was forever cracking his unique brand of gags that would have the audience either laughing or crying. Jokes about Scottish goalkeepers were a particular favourite, in a bid to wind up straight man St John.
This programme, which was broadcast on 16th December 1989, is packed with football news and views including the following :
Preview of Everton v Manchester City to be played the following day (17th December 1989) including an interview with City's new manager Howard Kendall.
Preview of Charlton v Crystal Palace (16th December 1989) during the time these two clubs shared the same ground at Selhurst Park and the complications (and amusing travel arrangements) arising from Crystal Palace playing 'Away' on their own ground. Also includes an interview with Ron Noades the Chairman of Crystal Palace FC.
Highlights and goals from matches played during the previous week :
Coventry v Arsenal
Liverpool v Aston Villa
QPR v Chelsea
Charlton v Millwall
Manchester United v Crystal Palace
Bradford City v West Ham United
Crewe Alexandra v Bristol Rovers
Aberdeen v Dundee United
There is also a feature on snooker player Stephen Hendry who is interviewed by John McCririck.

It may not have bothered Greavsie that the Clydebank game was called off, but it meant we had to stay in the Radnor all afternoon 🍺🍺

MikeySaint859 - he won 2 league titles, 1 FA Cup, 1 European trophy, reached 3 other Cup Finals and had several high league finishes. His 'downfall' can also be attributed to the European ban on English clubs stifling his ability to grow & learn as a manager. He also made the brave decision to go abroad and manage in Spain.

*A lot* of Charlton's predicament at the time is *dominant* today in non-league football. Brighton also had to groundshare with Gillingham for two seasons, but we never had a dream return to our old ground (the Goldstone Ground) compared to the Addicks. Same went and will go with many other clubs.

"I've gone back into the transfer market with players I know..." That was Kendall's problem when he came back from Spain. He had about half a decade as a successful manager, and was the architect of his own downfall because of complacency.
