Sainsbury's Delivery Van to Arctic Ready Adventure Camper: Building For the EXTREME Cold!

This build might be our biggest test yet! We have built a few campers now for our adventures but the pressure is really on to build this one just right....because if we don't it could be an icicle covered disaster! We are converting this ex-Sainsbury's supermarket delivery van in to the ultimate winterised camper to tackle the cuttingly cold temperatures of northern Europe and the arctic this winter. In this episode we prepare our electrics and plumbing for the polar weather, install a new suspension system, which Jon gets a little too much enjoyment out of, make an almost costly mistake with the drawers and doors, share our system for safe drinking water in your van and Jon makes up for the 'slim-line' tool chat of last week by bumbling on about tools for way too long. Lets do this!
Our new suspension system was kindly sponsored by Rhodes Vans. If you'd like to upgrade yours you can get a 10% discount for the next 4 weeks (until the 25th Nov 2023) if you use the code TBT10 at the checkout: rhodesvans.co.uk/a-mercedes-s...

    Just be careful when you put the feral ends into the socket that you don't push the ends in too far, if you do when you screw the grub screws in, there is a possibility that you tighten the grub screws onto the insulation of the feral and no contact is made. I mention this as I have done that exact thing and have to remove the socket again to rectify the problem.

    You guys are giving us the inspiration to do another build. You make it so easy! Why did it take us 2 years 😂 Just a coupe of things on the electric side of things. 1. I would install an isolating switch for the solar. This way, when you have next to no solar you can switch it off and allow your dc to dc to charge at 50a, rather than 25a which it will if there is even a bit of solar. In low sun areas/times you want as much dc to dc charhing as possible. 2. Go bigger batteries if you can, if you plan on being off grid as much as possible. We learnt this the hard way. Started with 150ah usable AGM (for budget reasons) now have 560ah lithium which means we don't have to hook up for a 5 days to a week. Good luck and cant wait to see the rest of the build!

    Those Kreg Jigs are really good I have the K4 version which clamps from the front. Which make dealing with large panels a breeze. I have the Sumo Springs on my list of mods to do to the Van once it is finally sorted out as ours is horrible in high wind and on uneven roads where it really throws itself about. Would have been interesting to see how the Sumo Springs stack up on their own as I hadn't even considered the helper springs. I had looked into possibly add 5 ton springs. We have stabilizers to wind down to try and stop the rock at night when my Eldest rolls around and before fitting them I used to feel a bit sick as I suffer with Motion sickness as I have gotten older. I used to Watch Greg's Channel before he started his Van Conversion. He was a great source of information and did cover some things in great detail. Looking forward to the next thrilling installment next weekend.

    Just for charging laptops no 230 V~ is necessary. There are nice adapters for 12 V=, whose output can be adjusted between 17 V= and 22 V=, depending on your laptop model. They also come with all kinds of plugs, so that the one for your model is very probably among them. In case your laptops charge on USB-C, it's even easier to find an adapter, they are called "USB-C Laptop Car Charger"

    Kreg make a 3/4" (20mm) screw for 1/2" (12.5mm) board, they also do a clamp that fits in the drilled hole and pulls the joint closed, not much use for what you are doing, but good for if you ever need to join a worktop

    A tip from a Swede who drives on snow 5 months a year! Get real winter tires with studs. With the ones you have, you will get stuck in the first snow you see. In Sweden, Norway and Finland, it is a law that you must have proper winter tires for all vehicles, including buses and trucks. Good tires is NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTA, CONTINENTAL VanContact ICE or MICHELIN X-ICE NORTH.

  • @truebluetravellers

    @truebluetravellers

    8 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the info. I checked that the tyres we’ve got meet the requirements of the law for all the countries we hope to visit they are 3 peaks mud and snow tyres. Our problem is that we need to get from the UK to the Nordics and studded tyres aren’t permitted for quite a way of that journey. We are planning to take snow chains so at least we can take them on and off and will have recovery equipment with us too 😀
