as a skipper (!) of a very small sailboat and as one who has had the pleasure of spending a week on a Concordia Yawl at a regatta off Mt Desert Island, i still become breathless when experiencing or watching the incredible beauty of sailing vessels. After all these decades, it still makes me shake my head in admiration.

I had met the 112' schooner Mauna Tea in Honolulu. They had just arrived from Cabo San Lucas bound for Tahiti. After an overnight sail to Waimea Bay they offered me a position. I declined since I already had a good job on the water. Any young person should seriously consider signing on to these yachts.

Beautiful vessel. As a sailor, I’m surprised that very few if any of the crew wore any gloves - either when raising halyards or handling other sheets and lines. Also surprised that with the exception of the guy who had to get into the rigging, not one person was wearing any kind of pfd. On a vessel that size, going that fast, by the time someone realizes you’re gone, you’re gone. Compared to what it costs simply to maintain the bright work, gloves and pfd’s are cheap - esp. compared to the loss of a crew member.

Doesn't take long to harden the hands, then you don't need gloves... wear gloves always, and your f ed the day you lose em.

If your hands get snagged you most likely get a, possibly nasty, cut wound. If your gloves get stuck your hand will be pulled along.... There is a reason why you don,t use gloves when working lines, wires or any thing that rotates.

that's not true. bigger boats travel faster and move more cargo per crewman. Of course, this is a pleasure yacht, so the cargo considerations are moot.
