Your videos inspired me to buy a sailboat and learn to sail. I managed to purchase a 1977 30' Pearson and sail it up and down the Florida coast. Thanks for sharing and safe travels!

@itsOZone I paid $5500.00 for the 1977 Pearson and sold it for $7500.00 two months later. Then I bought a Catalina 30 1994 for $20,000. I am currently preparing for our next trip. Last season, I lived on the sailboat for six months, and it was amazing.

Sam, I want to reiterate what many others have said here. The light screws for the padeye for the safety harness are too light. I am retired from the USCG. I have pitch poled on a 44. I have seen deck fittings that were bolted into a steel deck pulled free. I saw a coxswains chair with multiple bolts ripped from the deck. I applaud your desire to make yourself safe. But please beef up the anchor points. Additionally if you can get rid of the shackle on the mast for the whisker pole/spinnaker pole you will be much better off. During the video I saw the shackle slide to the leward side of the mast. thus when you apply back pressure on the outboard end of the pole you risk putting the pole in a bind and snapping the pole. You would be better off to put a larger ring on your mast that will accommodate the pole and keep it on the front of the mast and not off to the leward side. Fair winds.

Excellent stuff Sam . I used to be a delivery ( mostly single handed until the insurance companies insisted I had to have crew) captain after sailing all over the World . Advice , all tethered points for your personal safety harness should be machine screws or bolts with fender washers and nuts . I lost a good friend in the Indian Ocean as the deck fitting for his harness was screwed and not bolted. Thanks for all the great videos .

GHA, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. I spent along time sailing in the IO but I did it on a 1000' aircraft carrier. We too lost a sailor in the IO during bad weather, he worked in my division. I worked on the flight-deck catching aircraft on the arresting gear engines. That was great advice you gave Sam, be safe my friend...

Sam, dont use screws for your safety harness pad eyes! They need to be through bolted and probably add a backing plate. Keep up the videos, probably one of my favorite channels I've come across. Hope to get out there myself some day.

Two more comments about safety. #1. Always have a 75' line attached to you if you leave your boat and it is not anchored securely. #2. Find a good size diving knife and wear a thigh scabbard with the knife in it. Make sure it is secured to you with a line too. Doing both of these things could save your life.

To fix noisy cables inside your mast without installing conduit: Pull the cable, then attach long zip ties every 12", 120 degrees apart - don't cut the tails off the zip ties. Re-install the cables in the mast. The zip ties will prevent the cables from slapping, but will not interfere with internal halyards.

Use UV resistant zip ties. A quality brand like Ty-Rap or Panduit. Home depot stuff will fail quickly.

Sam, You have convinced me to go for it. I'm 69 yrs. old and have very little sailing experience. Between lack of money and lack of confidence I almost gave up. I think I will buy a salvage boat in the keys and work on her. Thank you very much I'm a bird person too

I always put Sam's videos on in the background while I do my design work. Very relaxing and the little doses of serotonin from listening to him have a good time keeps me happy and productive.

Sam. You will probably never see this, but you mentioned your cables slapping around inside your mast. I had the same thing on my Ericson 26. Bugged the heck out of me. So I took the mast down and pulled the cables out and got some big honking zip ties and tied the cables together in a bundle but left the tails on. Each tie was about a foot apart. When I put it back in the mast all the tie tails braced the cable cluster and no more slapping around. It worked great and was very cheap. No conduit necessary. Love the videos, Thanks.

😆😂 when all the birds show up I just bought an S2 24 foot and am learning to sail. You are a big inspiration!!

As a long time sailor, I would like to give you my advise - take it for what it is worth. Your fittings you attached for your Jack Lines appeared to only be screwed into the fiberglass - do you really think the shock load of you falling overboard tethered to that will hold? They should be thru bolted with fender washers and sealed with bedding compound - i.e.. 3M4200 or Butyl tape. You need to protect all fastenings you do on the boat from corrosion and moisture leakage. I admire your adventurous spirit, but some things need to be done right the first time. Also clean up your lines - coil them correctly.

I love all the little things I'm learning about sailing. Sam is an easy going and engaging sailor, and a damn good navigator. I'm a former sailboat owner and future (hopefully) trawler skipper, who does a lot of kayaking in Puget Sound, (45 degrees in the heat of summer) so these warm water trips are really nice to watch.
