SAILING INTO A CLIFF | Hole in the Wall (Part II)
We are sailing through the Hole in the Wall. Our sailboat squeezes through the 50m gap in remote cliffs of the wild Northern Territory. The Gugari Rip, or Hole in the Wall, is our portal to the Wessel Islands, where we catch our first Giant Trevally. We heard the fishing was good in the Northern Territory.

SO FUN FACT: When I said the narrowest point of the Hole in the wall was 100 metres wide...yeah, by now, everyone should know that maths isn't my strong suit. We've recalculated and researched as that just seemed WWAAAYY too wide, and we have discovered that it probably varies between 30-50 metres wide...if anyone actually knows, please feel free to comment below. Navionics led me astray...🤔Love from Soph xx

Narrowest section is just under 120m, the tides thing is best understood once you realise the flow is east and west, flooding west into Arnhem and Buckingham bay, and ebbing East, then it spread out thru the passages you crossed, flooding SE thru the Hole in the wall and NW thru the channel between Cotton and Wigram, and round Cape Wilberforce. Ebbing NW thru the Hole in the Wall and SE between Cotton & Wigram and around Wilberforce. You are not the first to be confused and you certainly wont be the last! Those waters around Cape Wilberforce and into Malay Roads are some of the nastiest in the NT, especially at Spring tides and when the SE trade winds are developed in the dry season. We usually go down Malay Roads, and up thru Firefly Strait between Alger Isalnd and Warnawi Island in the dry season and avoid Hole in the Wall & especially Cumberland Strait, its more distance to get to the NW side of the Wessels, but a lot safer and more comfortable! You guys did a great job in the conditions, in a boat that size, good seamanship. Elizabeth Bay was definitely the right option! You can also go from Elizabeth Bay, up between Cotton and Astell when its strong SE, and then across to Raragala Bay.

Soph you are so fun to see. Stay safe good looking......x x to you........
Thank you for showing us this thrilling passage! I thought that my armchair sailing told me about this feature, but I had never heard of it.
Hi you two your videos are so I can't stop looking I hope you keep them coming and good luck on the schooling...............
Thanks for the exciting ride!
As an ex nor westa _ Trevally are great eating - just bleed tail and gills - cut out the blood line when filleting - they also bake well whole with lemon / butter / tomato / onion stuffing
The detail about the tides and how and why you do things is really interesting, appreciated, fascinating! keep it up
That was amazing guys. Having sailed through coastal bars I could real feel the washing machine affect of the currents. Wait until you reach the Dampier archipelago, the fishing is epic 🎣
Hey guys queenfish makes great nummus or ceviche
That's awesome
That hole in the wall was so epic!!! Looked so beautiful! Weird only 40% of regular viewers are subbed. Don’t know why you wouldn’t sub!!
Absolutely stunning episode! The excitement was palpable(even though we didn’t have a stunt carrot)The camera work and edit were top shelf as always. See you next week!!

Queen fish for (fish curry) guys 👍
Well done 😊 and may your passage’s be as easygoing, down to earth and ocean. While precociously continuing on your way around these fatal shores making steady progress, smooth and easy straight sailing for our favourite young and salty couple.😂

I went through the hole in the wall on the cape Cleveland prawn trawler in 84 heading east from Carnarvon wa to Gladstone Q. An epic voyage for a pommy skipper. The standing wave on the eastern side can be tricky.

@@SlimandSophSailingNakama thanks it was. I am back in the UK now, but still have the photos. We waited for dawn and the tide on the western side and took the dingy in and explored the openings to left and right. we also visited the horizontal falls in WA but did not go through them. Like I said an adventure for a pommy skipper.
What an Epic ride.
What an absolute adrenaline rush for you both! Amazing video as always, thanks for sharing and you’re both such great story tellers. Fair winds. X

Sensational!
Nothing wrong with queenie or trevally. Queenie is great for nummas and trevally is great for curry. Even fresh and battered trevally is lovely
I’m afraid you let go of a treat with that GT. They make amazing sashimi……

We haven't tried them, but maybe we should have here when we got the chance. We are not big fish-eating people, so if we hear rumours that they are not the best. We would rather let them swim away. Glad to hear you enjoyed the ep!

Glad you could relive some of those feelings through the video legend. Yep, the fishing is pretty mental up here. I think we would be too chicken to pull in a marlin though 😂

Love the episodes, we are still catching up on some of the earlier ones as well as watching these latest ones. We have been through most of these areas in our younger years and it’s great to see them again and you guys living your best and most adventurous lives. I am sure some one else has told you by now but both medium sized queenfish and gold spot trevally are both quite delicious filleted and eaten fresh. Both can also be picked as a delicious and refreshing snack as you ghost along under sail on one of those humid, hot NT passages. Love the show, your competent approach to adventuring and the fun you both have while doing it, very keen to watch the coming episodes. Trev and Christine.

We've heard the blue and golden trevally make good eating, however in our three years living on Nakama, we never heard anyone describe GT as a table fish until we posted this video! good to know they go alright! We love our Tuna ⛵😁
That croc's mouth was tied shut.... wonder how it died :-0 Otherwise fantastic, first time I've seen your work, subscribed, liked .. Cheers great job, love your stuff.

Although that would be fun, we're not sure if we are brave enough to do that in our little croc chew toy tender...we also don't have enough guts in our outboard to get out of a sticky situation😅😅😅
Queen is better eating than tuna, sad you didn't realise 😂
Well that looked a bit exciting - to say the least.
