Sailing Failed, Engines Failed...but WE Still Made It | Episode 238

Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail, on this weeks episode we sail to Tahanea, a stopover in the Tuamotus to stage ourselves East enough so we can sail back up to the Marquesas for cyclone season, but just before arriving to the atoll in the dark, our engines fuel filters clog and Warren scrambles to get them replaced so we can safely make our way through the pass of Tahanea.
Thanks for watching the Adventures of WE!

    Time for some Racor type filters? A little difficult to mount in the engine room on a Helia but I found adequate space for each engine. Easier to observe issues and change filters before anything gets to the engine filter.

    This is an incredible sailing video. It perfectly captures the things that draw me to this lifestyle: sharing the experience with family and friends, the self-reliance and ability to quickly diagnose a problem and self-rescure to keep a problem from snowballing, and most importantly: the incredible bond you have built together through this endeavor. The way Erica looks at you.... Wow. And then the cherry on top: swimming with manta rays. This is my favorite moment from your channel. Good on ya for not adding any un-needed dialog and just playing the footage with a killer song. Bravo We Sail. This video is just what I needed to remind me of my own dream. ❤

    Warren if you have the room, put two rancore filters side by side and when the one filter gets clogged up turn your Ball valve to the other filter. You don't lose your engine and you can change the other filter under way. Ok looks like ya'll are still having fun. We have had a Is exciting day with the volcano. She is about to go up any second or hour or day now. We have had a sworm of earthquakes sents midnight to now ( 11:11 a.m. Hawaii time on January 31 2024) we have had over 200 earthquakes. I must tell you, kids, I look forward to your videos and this one was particularly great. As a kid, I lived in La Jolla, CA and in the 50's, you could still get Abalone and Lobster in ten or twelve feet of water. I am amazed at how deep you are going today without breathing assistance. The Manta Rays were particularly great as the only time I have seen one was off the coast of Baja, California between Tijuana and Ensenada.

    The dreaded fuel bug. I have recently polished the fuel in the same cataraman as yours. Lots of water in the bottom of the tank as well as the black bug. Check out the the oring on your deck filler.. Replace or add some grease. Also the breather is under the Aft beam & can under certain conditions allow water in. Do not use fuel doctor as it absorbs water into the diesel which will slowly destroy the pump & injectors on a common rail engine. Good luck with sorting it.

    Thank you so much, this was really helpful information. At the moment we are currently hauled out and the plan is to clean out the tank. You are right about the deck fitting, its constantly getting wet when it rains.

  • @sailordavo

    @sailordavo

    5 ай бұрын

    @@WEsail Okay cleaning out the tank is the best way. On the top of the tank, remove the round plate. This will give you better access. I can guarantee that there will be water on the bottom. When we polish, we empty the tank. Then use a high flow portable pump to wash the inside of the tank with deisel that has been dosed with bug killer. Make sure you get into the corners. The long fuel supply hose to the starboard engine can be blown out with compressed air from your dive tanks, if you can't find new fuel lines. Replace if you can, as the bug can regrow from remments in the lines. I would also recommend changing your primary filters to Racor & setting up a change over system. So if one is blocked, you just switch to the clean one. If you wire up an electric pump that is mounted on the wall in the engine bay. Then you can polish your own fuel. A real asset when cruising in areas where dodgy fuel is likely. Use a good light to have a good look at the inside of your tank. Hopefully you can source a strong bug killer to put a large dose in, to clean up the tank. Then discard it. Good luck Cheers Dave

Now they are together again? Maybe I am not putting the puzzle together correctly but I kind of confused myself with timelines watching both. Whatever...things that amaze me is how these guys have to be the on board mechanic and know what to look for and how to fix it on the fly....and also have the parts available.

    Hey Brad, happy to answer that one and I could easily see how confusing this would be especially if you have been watching both channels. We are slightly behind from real time in comparison to Delos as well. They posted that episode a few weeks back as we have just now posted. They also are a little closer to real time on their episode than we are. It's hard to produce the videos and be at real time. It honestly allows a little buffer for us to not constantly have to edit videos from week to week. But we are inching our way closer to as real time as possible! Thanks so much for watching and following the adventures. I hope I was able to make things a little more clear for you. Also, Warren is super handy and I don't know what I would do without him and his skillset aboard. This is what you have to be when you live on a boat! Cheers!
