Sailing at 77% of Wind Speed WHILE REGENERATING at 19 Amps! (MJ Sailing - Ep 327)
We're back to bring you the second half of our time in SE Asia, and this time, instead of looking at boats in the factory, we actually get to spend a few days sailing one!!
Matt and I were super excited when Terry's invitation to come out and visit also included a side trip over to Pattaya Thailand to spend a few days aboard his Max Cruise 44, 'Max One'. Since there are strict laws against boats sailing in Vietnam, this is where the deliveries are made of the Max Cruise yachts, and is a great training ground for the new owners learning to sail them. And as 'soon to be' owners ourselves, we jumped at the chance to get on Terry's boat for some practice.
We'd only have two days on the water before our flight back, so we needed to make the most of them. The grounds outside of the Ocean Marina Resort are fairly protected, and at this time of year, winds are a steady 10-15 knots. This was great for us, as one of the large reasons for us choosing the Max Cruise is its light wind sailing capabilities.
In the next two days we'd try out different points of sail with the Code 65, the genoa, and also the spinnaker.
Day one had us starting with the Code 65, and even through winds of 11-13 knots, our boat speed was usually between 9-11 knots, which we were incredibly happy with. And on top of that, we were regenerating power at 15-19 amps!!
Switching over to the genoa, a smaller headsail, we worked on pointing capabilities, and tried to keep ourselves as close to the wind as we could, just to see what kinds of speeds we could achieve. Holding a course of 45 degrees to the apparent wind angle, we were still sailing comfortably along at 10-11 knots in 13-14 knots of wind.
Terry's boat has mini keels, so when our boat is completed with its dagger boards and different sails, the two of us should be able to point even higher into the wind.
With one day of sailing down, we were extremely happy with the speeds we were achieving, and the ease in which the two of us should be able to handle this boat by ourselves.
One more day on the water to see how she does with the spinnaker. Stay tuned next week to find out!
We hope you enjoy!

Oh, what a treat!!!! Lovely sail and beach day, thanks, I really needed that today. Cheers! I really like the idea of regen powering ice making and blended beverages while doing 9 knots in a 11 knot breeze.

It's my trick for getting people to stay until the end, haha. 😉
How exciting to finally experience open water sailing in your model and to discover it really DOES sail well upwind. Great news. An excellent impetus to get your boat splashed ASAP.
I wonder if they will ever finish their boat or keep fairing/promoting max cruise for the rest of their life
You are so lucky to have the opportunity to sail and learn your new boat (clone).

We think so too! It felt so right when we were on there, we can't wait until our own is complete. 😍
Glad to see you folks back on the water. Enjoy. You deserve it.

Thank you! It was a much needed escape from sanding - and also a boost to enthusiasm to finish ours!
I bet it was a shot in the arm sailing the same boat as yours in a bigger test area. I'm thrilled for both of you! I can't wait to see the progress you make on the build with the added vigor and enthusiasm the trip provided. Now, when you experience the drudgery of sanding, faring, glassing, and painting ad nauseum, you can fall back on the trip and have a great sense of the adventure that awaits when the boat is finished. How much energy will the solar panels provide in comparison to the propeller regeneration? Obviously an exact comparison depends upon the boat speed and the amount and quality of available sunlight. I'm just looking for a general sense of the difference in power generation between the two systems.

We anticipate something like 95 percent will come from solar. Even while we were reg on one side, the solar was still putting more in the bank - even with the shadows - than the motor was giving us.
It was great seeing you back in your element. Praying all will go well, and a year from now you will be out on your boat having the time of your life.
Asia is so nice. We just returned from two month is Japan. Food is AMAZING, people friendly and peaceful. Safe, secure, happiness abounds...dont drive as your stress will return. Take the bus or subway

Looks like a lot of fun. Glad you had a good trip. The numbers are very impressive, both in speed and power generation.
You both are having an excellent adventure. Nice you’re going to get familiar with the cruise before yours is finished. Stay safe and save those ideas!

Considering that we'll be half a world away from Terry when we launch our boat, it was nice to use his to go over all the systems and sails to familiarize ourselves with everything.
Got to love those speed numbers.

Glad you enjoyed it! 😃
I figured the boat had mini keels-- I would expect your boat to be able to go much closer to the wind. 70-80% of windspeed off the wind is nice...
I love the regen ! I hope your build has more solar and rain collection. Thanks for the tour

We're not big fans of rain catchment. We've had it before, and the stuff that came down from the deck was pretty gross until it rained for days.... Which was pretty rare in most of the areas we sailed (Not Scotland :). But it doesn't hurt to have it as a backup to our backup water maker, so we could always rig something up if it were a survival situation.
Nice 👍

Hopefully on your next sail, you fill in some of the blanks from the regeneration experience. Time, average speed on/off, wind speed, props, how much power in by hr/duration.

We need a lot more time/experience to properly chart the regen in different conditions. We're just getting introduced to the nuances of this system, and have much to learn.

There's an amateur built cat out sailing called Grit, which I think is a good name to represent what it takes to actually get out sailing on a completed boat :)
Great, you had a fun sail in Thailand! Is there a way you could validate those speed numbers? It seems completely unrealistic that the boat would go 11 knots in 13 knots of wind even with the code 65 and a beam reach? I think there may be some manipulation of the knot meter. How about Navionics on your phone screen at the same time as the chart plotter. Those are higher performance numbers than any other catamaran on the market.
@MJSailing
Ай бұрын
Not really unrealistic, we actually did better our previous times sailing the boat. Navionics would show speed over ground -same as the number in the left corner of the B&G - and not through the water, so that wouldn't be accurate with the current here. You want speed through water to show the effects of currents. They are good numbers, but more stripped down racer/cruisers like a Dazcat of TS would be even higher.
Would it be possible to sail a catamaran solo?

Max 1 is my boat, i sail the boat single handed most of teh time, you just need to be organised, normally just use main and genoa, and on most occasions when sailing by myself i leave marina with atleast 1 reef in the main
