    Hello Tim. I spent the last 15 years of my working life with "Bay Valve", a valve specialty company. As I'm sure you know, every valve has a stuffing box where the stem comes out to "turn" it on or off. My point is I worked on many water valves over the years and I do not remember ever putting a waxed packing of any kind in a stuffing box. We used Garlock graphite infused packing material.

    The common stainless is 304 and is more likely to corrode. The 316 stainless is for marine use. That is likley the difference in the stainless you have.

    Hey Tim. Just saw this video and notice something in your steering quadrum. The bolts at the end of the cable, should be BOTH on the same side! The first is to take the tension of the cable and the second is to lock the first one to place. Having them on either side, let's the outside one free to move and loose tension while the inner one is doing nothing!

    Rode motorcycles since I was little. On my second Harley now. In high school, took flying lessons; got my pilots license at 19. No more flying for me due to money and health. Since about 06, I’ve had this fascination with boats. The interest has intensified and will not go away. I’m landlocked, but I will probably move at some point, and I want a 22’ or 25’ sailboat to learn on. See if my wife likes it. Be something good to do with her.

    Been sailing since my 20’s, got my pilot’s license in 1979, just bought a new Triumph Bonneville, and I trained horses for a decade. All involve transport and forward movement, and for a certain amount of freedom from the everyday grind, or even societal concerns. All require maintenance as well, but this too can offer a sense of accomplishment.

    Yes you are correct I was a sailor 45 Irwin Ketch, until I moved to West Texas! I use to ride motorcycles until a guy ran a stop stop sign and nailed me and I got a helicopter ride. I learned to fly when I was in high School in 1974. The salt air was something I grew up with in Va Beach Va. You really have to stay on top of it!

    Hi there great video - thanks. I have 85 C&C 33-2 on Vancouver Island - it's always been a salt water boat. I wonder if salt water issues manifest themselves in warmer and humid climates maybe where there is less rain. My boat is almost 40 years old and I don't have the issues that you showed on Lady K. I remember asking surveyor about my standing rigging and he made a comment indicating that issues with salt are not as pervasive in our wet and low humidity west coast climate. So maybe there's more at play than just the salty ocean? Just a thought.

    Dear sailor friend, I follow you with interest and with the critical spirit that I put in place to sift through every news. I am sorry to disagree with your generalisations about the harmful effects of staying in the salt water of a sailboat. What is certain is that the correct choice of materials for the construction and assembly of the individual components is essential. I have just sold my 1980 HR 312 Mk1 and I assure you that it did not have any of the defects or issues highlighted on your boat. In general, I believe that "you buy what you pay for". Best regards

    I crewed on a lightning this Spring whose metal jib luff tension control lines broke due to corrosion from one day sailing in brackish water. The boat had been cleaned afterwards, but we assume some salty water followed the lines down under the deck where they corroded over the winter and snapped on the way out to the race course causing us to miss day 1 of the regatta.

    If u get a magnet can test quality of the stainless steel...the less stick or attraction the better..good will almost have no attraction at all. That's how I was taught and seems scrap yards do the same. That's who showed me 20 years ago.. I never tested on saltwater with stainless that has no attraction to see if rust long term thought..and metal can rust onto stainless..like if stainless bolt but nut is steel than will rust on the bolt and spread up it with time

  • @williamfennell8175
    @williamfennell81752 жыл бұрын

    Bummer, At least it was only a year. That is a good indication of some of the challenges to material selection for ocean going gizmos. The bits of common fasteners, strapping , u-bolts and nuts not specifically marketed for “marine” ( salt water) but still listed as stainless steel are most likely made from 400 series alloy containing a nominal (10%) amount of chromium for corrosion resistance. The cutlery in the galley is good example. A quick test to see if the alloy is magnetic will help with identification. All 400 series stainless steels are magnetic. The heavy marine Bow Eye used to secure your solar panels is undoubtedly 316 SS. 316 alloy has a higher percentage of chromium (18%) plus nickel (5%) and molybdenum (2%) . 304 SS is another stainless alloy that is similar to 316 but is not as corrosion resistant due to absence of molybdenum . I believe all 300 series stainless steels are not magnetic. All of the galvanized stuff ( anchors, chain, strapping used to secure tank to pulpit) is coated in zinc (as you mentioned) the zinc is effectively a sacrificial coating that easily corrodes to protect the more important stuff underneath. Very much like the “zincs” attached to your propeller shaft or outboard or hull. The stains visible on the shrouds is likely a unique form of crevice corrosion associated with quality stainless steels. ( even 316). Crevice corrosion happens in places that are exposed to salt water but have limited access to oxygen. i.e. twisted wire, crimped wire, underneath washers and nuts. The real damage is happening out of sight regardless of frequency of inspection. You never really know without breaking it or replacing it on some schedule. Overall a very interesting tour. Thanks, Bill

    Concerning the interior, the steering and mounts, how much of that do you attribute to the partial sinking? Or, extreme water ingress if you will, when the through hull failed? Life long sailor and I have zero interest in motorcycles or airplanes. Likely most of the stainless that corroded is 304 and the stainless that that didn't corrode is 316. A number of the issues you identify are simply due to the boat being lightly built. My 50 year old Allied 36 has the same sort of companionway brackets as yours and they are fine. They are original and are through bolted through a 2" thick oak beam, not held on with screws. As far as the "U" bolts that corroded badly, I would suspect that they may have been zinc plated steel, not stainless. Alternatively they may be cheap Chinese "stainless" of unknown grade. I have "U" bolts on my boat that have been there for 26 years and are just fine even though they are 304. My boat has been in salt water for 50 years..
