Sailboat Deck/Hull Joint Repair (Phantom/Sunfish) - Two Sons Sailing EP 17

We've made some huge progress on Max's Phantom sailboat (basically a sunfish clone.) After an eternity of scraping and picking silicone caulk out of the joint, we were finally able to adhere the two properly. We used a thickened 2-part epoxy that fits in a caulk gun called Thixo, which REALLY simplified the process.

Did you deal the edge of the seam afterwards? I just got an old Minifish and the seam doesn't leak, but the edge is just open fiberglass, which in theory could take on water and separate over time. On lasers, they gelcoat over the seam to protect it.

I haven't done much with it yet. If you have bare glass fibers showing you could at least seal them with some unthickened resin. That would keep them from taking up water or stabbing your hands. Many of the Sunfish I've seen have metal trim that goes all the way around the edge, instead of the folded seam like the Phantom, although the later versions did away with it.

@@twosonssailing the minifish has a folded seam too. I'm probably going to pour polyester resin along it because it's all I can find in my small town. Should be good enough to seal it up.

Just make sure you know of any previous repairs that may have been done. Polyester doesn't adhere well to epoxy.

For most of it, yes. Finn took a turn near the end (where things get REALLY shaky.) Normally I'd set up on a tripod, but this was too time-sensitive to be able to spend time setting up and moving the camera.
