First, fantastic that you and Andy were able to get together. You are two of my favorite KZread channels and you two are the biggest reason that I started my dream project. Second, thank you for addressing the negative comments! I couldn't believe them as I read them last weekend. Some of the finest moments that I am finding are when things go completely wrong and you find a way to overcome. I started my project having never been on a sailboat and knowing nothing about them. Mine came with an engine in pieces, stuffed in boxes. The only video I've posted so far, is when I fired up the engine for the first time. What a feeling! This weekend I found out that I don't have a mainsail in my inventory. I bought a used one and it turned out to be 5 feet too tall. Thee are all learning moments and the whole reason for doing a project like this. Thank you for getting me started and with your constantly positive outlook, keeping me going! Some of us really appreciate what you do (and Andy too!) Steve

I understand 'this kind of work'. I enjoy it too. Having said that, I don't understand people that like doing yard work...planting flowers, trees, cutting grass etc...but, that is what they enjoy, and I would not criticize them on their pleasure. I also enjoy fixing or working on cars; some people simply detest that, but I don't. We all have our pleasures in life. Thanks for taking us along with you on your journey.

I have a canal cruiser here in England that I bought as a project, Totally stripped it out down to the shell and have spent the last twelve months working on her. I knew nothing about boats and with the help from your videos and Boatworks Today have helped me enormously and given me the information I needed to restore my boat. Thank you both for all the videos they help not just me but thousands of other enthusiasts. Never dwell on the negatives they just wish to be doing what your doing. Think of the positive efects you both give people :)

I can't tell you how often people ask why I'm fixing up my old boat (1974) instead of buying something newer. Like you I feel that part of the fun is in working on the boat and knowing every part of her. I think a majority of people people think that is not so spiffy but I have realized I'm doing this for me and my family and not others. I love what you are doing and I understand your uncommon dream. Keep up the good work!

I've enjoyed Andy's videos too. He does very good work and in his How-To videos he explains it all in detail in an easy-to-understand way. My boat is 50 years old this year (I've only had it for 3) and the previous owners have taken good care of it. I still have some things I want to change and improve and your and Andy's videos give me confidence that I can do it too.

I have personally taken a different path to achieving the same amazing result, by leaving a lucrative career as an engineer to be a shipwright in a marina to gain hands-on experience and cannot agree more that knowing your vessel gives peace of mind. Don't worry about the negative trolls. They're just angry little cowards who never accomplish anything other than being a nuisance. I'm NOT into restoring projects boats BUT I watch both your channel and Boatworks today to learn techniques for repairing the boats that I own. I would rather watch programs that teach me something as opposed to wasting my time watching some ignorant reality TV show. You guys rock!...Keep up the good work.

Have followed all your videos and appreciated it. Have a 43 foot that I'm still restoring. Have the same attitude as you, it's fun to fix things and it's part of my identity as a man, the pleasure of building things with hands and seeing things that have been broken work again.

Mads, disregard the negative comments. They don't understand the mindset behind the process. I'm 3 years into fixing up a 40 year old 30' sailboat with similar long term aspirations. The fixing up part is enjoyable to me as I find satisfaction in overcoming the challenges associated with it. Glass work, carpentry & electrical. A geeks dream. Keep on. ;)

Those negative comments are from people that don't hav the skills , nor the positive attitude that you have. Don't pay any attention to these kind of people. I just finished watching your video with boat works today, who happens to be one of my other favorite ypou tube channels. I most appreciated your talk about negative comments and nay sayers at the end of your video. Any idiot can point out faults. Only ambitious, intelligent people are able to look for solutions to the faults. Please, never let the said nay sayers sway ypou from your dreams, because you have certainty encouraged my wife and I on the restoration of our Allied Mistress 39 that we intend to cruise on. Hi Mads! I applaud your integrity and not getting the negative voices get to you. What you are doing is to share the love of refitting an old boat and inspiring the rest of us. Many people just don't understand the satisfaction of fixing and reusing something old. In the end it will be better than anything made in the factory. Great video!

Nice video MAde, glad you were not offended when lest week i recommended Andy's channel as i didn't know you were a fan. You both have great channels. Also never worry about the negative comments, they are from people who have not the skill to fix up a project them selves and look down on people who can and do it. A project like this produces a far better result than anything new and you get the added benefit of knowing the boat from all aspects. Love the channel Mads.

Completely agree with your closing statements. The learning you are getting out of all this work is priceless. I used to have a sailboat and dream about getting a new one in the short future. I learned so many lessons w/ that first (old) boat. Those lessons made me more prepared not only for boat related matters but also for many other situations in my life. Hey Mads I am totally on your page on the enjoyment, knowledge and skills gained from doing your own repairs, be it to a boat, or an old house or even an old car. The latter being what I have done and am still doing today. Hence translating such skills and work to a boat doesn't feel daunting. Just a range of new challenges to confront and overcome. So kept going mate, we all are learning through your experiences.

For ANY ONE who is planning on cruising, what you are doing is SO SO valuable! We were cruising the Sea of Cortez and heard a “HELP HELP” radio call on Ch 16. When I responded, the guy was 50 ~ 75 miles way off any populated area. I offered to walk him through the problem. He responded, NO. He wanted me (or some one) to come to his boat to fix it. AND, it was a simple fix! Don't know what happened to him, he was not in danger of sinking, so I let him call others.......

Some people don't know what it is like to have a "love of labor". Some think that having to do labor is all negative. Don't listen to the hatters. Love your videos!

I spent almost 10 years remodelling a 100 year old house. I'm sure if I had spent all that time at my job instead I could have afforded a fully remodelled house but that wouldn't have been nearly as interesting and I would have learned nothing new. You enjoy fixing your old boat and we'll enjoy watching.

Mads in relation to the last point, some people don't understand that much more important than finishing the boat is the journey to get it, I and a friend repaired an old Peugeot 106, the time alone we spent on it if we went to MacDonald flip burgers would let us buy a new better car but the pleasure of seeing the car run and the knowledge we got are priceless, I see your project as the same. Every week I wait for your videos eagerly. I kind of want you to have lots of issues as it will make you do more videos, sorry for being selfish, keep the good work.

Fixing an older boat does take a lot of time and money but it's all about what you get out of it. You, like me, get plenty of experience, knowledge, and satisfaction on doing a good job and being able to do it yourself. I also enjoy working with my hands. Would have to with the project I've been working on lately. Early last year, I pulled my engine and over three months did a partial rebuild myself, with no prior knowledge on diesel engines. The reason to pull the engine was to replace the leaky fuel tank located under it, in the keel. For just over a year, I've been building a new one, myself, out of fiberglass using vinylester. Crazy, I know. But, it's finally nearing completion and soon, I hope to get the engine back in the boat. Mads, you do a good job of ignoring the negativity. Too much of that in the world as it is. You're doing a good job fixing your boat and getting to know her.

Hi Mads, I don't own a boat, have no desire to own a boat or fix one up. That said I thoroughly enjoy watching your channel. I like to see people fixing things that I have no ability to fix. I have a motorhome that keeps me busy and I get quite a few ideas on how I can fix something on that by watching you fix something on your boat. Keep up the good work.

this was a good dialog, and well edited. I am restoring a twenty nine foot sloop ,that was laid in 1968. I found your channel and have been watching clips almost nitely. this clip xo gained much useful information. tomorrow I tackle a rotten core in the cockpit.

Athena is going to be one great sailboat once your done! Remembering how you cleaned up the electrical system alone is proof. The deck will turn out the same way I'm sure. Having Andy on your side doesn't hurt either. Love his channel too. Keep up the great work!

How can anyone give you a negative comment? You are one of the nicest people on the planet. To me there is no difference to what you are doing to someone who buys a run down house or beaten up car and restores it. You do it because you love it. Mads you're awesome. You open yourself up and take us along on your dream every week. We bought our first boat after almost a 2 year search. I cannot tell you how many negative comments we got from people on expense, how much work they are, and a slew of other things. At first it was an emotional roller coaster for us (are we doing the right thing). We stuck to our guns though. Now that we have it a lot of those same people are happy for us, but moreover we accomplished something, and that has had a positive effect on them. Some of them are inspired in other ways and that's great. I think you know all of this, and no one will deter you. I can honestly say your channel, boatworks today, and life is like sailing were inspirations for us to stick to our dream of sailing our own boat. Can't wait until you are ultimately out there cruising.

Great to see you both chatting together. Two Great channels from both sides of the ocean. It just shows you how willing boat people are to help each other. Naysayers are just people who dont want to learn..or are too lazy.. You are doing a great job of Restoring your boat. I for one have learnt a lot, and I have grown up around boats.

I completely understand that you enjoy doing this work. I spent years rebuilding one boat and as soon as I finished I started another. It took forever as I had limited time and live in Canada were about 8 months of the year make outside work impossible for most tasks. In the end the projects cost more than if I had just bought a newer boat - but I enjoyed the process enormously. In fact, I might admit to preferring to work on the boat to actually using the boat. People say that I must have enormous "patience" to take on a project that was so time-consuming but my response is that if the only reason you undertake a project like this is to have a boat, then you will probably not finish the project. Putting the time and effort into it must be something you enjoy. That way you will not be broken by the time it takes. If you enjoy the process it just doesn't matter how long it takes. It is obvious that you get great pleasure from what you are doing and that alone justifies the project.

Ignore the bad comments, I don't think have ever commented on one of your videos but I have been watching from basically the beginning. I really enjoy watching your videos and sailing or diy you have a good screen presents. Keep going and one day I hope to see you out there.

As for the negative feedback you've been getting.....over here in the UK there was once a very special gentleman, very much a boating man of the most noble kind, who's legacy is very much alive today.....his famous saying was "With courage, nothing is impossible.!". His name was Sir William Hillary. The negative trolls out there should do a google search of him. I wonder what they would have thought about his dream had they been alive back in his day. Keep up the great work Mads, you're an inspiration for me and my own boat restoration project.

O heck yeah, for Father's day I got a day to work on the boat. Fixed some wireing drove it around the Coronado Island. Ground out some cracks, fiberglassed them in and painted the front half of the boat. Next I'm sanding the glass flat cleaning and then more paint. Its dark out and now I'm watching you two for pointers on future boat works. Thanks Guys!

Andy has helped me as well, he knows his business and a very nice man. In fact, I watched all his videos before starting on my retro fit of my boat.

Excellent advice on the epoxy vs Polyester resin and the fillers, very helpful. As for unsalvagaeable, ha, yes got to be the funniest comment so far. I, like you, love doing up old boats. I spent 15 years doing up a very big wooden fishing boat which people told me would never float. It had been put the water for 10+ years and required an inordinate amount of work which I did myself. When she went in the water I heard the boat yard comment she probably took on more water when she was new... I ignored the doom and gloom crowd telling me I was crazy' it will cost you a fortune, when will it ever be finished etc, etc. God knows what I would have done if there was social media back then. So love your attitude, you have many more supporters than doom and gloom people so keep going, as I know you will. Andy

I have found that those who are negative towards other people who are creative "doer's" tend to come from negative environments that breed failure rather than success. You are doing a great job and keep living your dream, :-)

Wow 2 of my favorite boat repair guys in one episode... awesome. Madz, I agree totally what you said about the negative comments. But then, remember that some people just have to rain on someone's parade to feel manly... don't worry about it and drive on. In the end it's your time and money.. and reward, and we get to go along a bit for the ride and learn from you as well. A lot of people don't want to mess with wet saturated decks. Paying someone to do this would be very very expensive. But taking out the cost of labor, and working from above vs below... you save a lot of time and money..

Cool! The world's two best boat vloggers co-starring in the one video. Today, I'm planning on installing a few new cleats (thanks to Mads' butyl tip in an old Obelix piece) and I'll also gelcoat a few small holes (and thanks to Andy for the colour-matching info).

Great video - and a big thank you for showing all the reparation work in detail - anyone with a not new boat can thank you for your vids. I am most looking forward to see the deck replacement - especially the middle plywood replacement - and how you will attach the end of it to the bow of the hull. All my best!

I've been doing a refurbishment job on my 38 yr old sloop as well and I totally agree with your philosophy. I do mine so that I know every system, every wire, and every part of the rig. And I do it myself so that I have no one else to blame if my repair isn't up to par... and usually better than a boat yard would do it! Keep going Mads. Awesome video, I really enjoy watching these types of videos and negative comments do not detour people who are interested in working on their own boats we realize the amount of effort that it takes to fix up an old boat.

Great video as always sir. I wouldn't worry about the negative comments, there are always couch jockies that need to be hateful. Please keep up the great work and know that there are plenty of people that really enjoy them.
