Sai Pallavi, Varshita Thatavarthi, Ratna Pathak & Seema Hari call out the fixation with Fair Skin

The Fairness Industry in India is valued at 450 million dollars. We call out this commercialization of Racism. Sai Pallavi leads by example by turning down a 2 crore advertisement for a fairness product.

In London, there are skin whitening injections or iv glutathione treatments containing glutathione and vitamin c. Each injection costing around £200 which is nearly 20,000rs.. you need more than 10/20 to get to fair colour and every 6months or 3 months As all these Bollywood actors are obsessed about fairness and they do have the money, they must be taking these treatments regularly.. I have this info as at some point even I though of doing these treatments but at last min backed off as I realised I live in UK and no one here really gives a shit about skin colour.. i have wheatish skin colour and I have good features so overall I look good BUT when I goto India especially Delhi, they are like your brother and sister are soo fair but your colour is not “saaf”.. and I am like wtf.. I am really slim so I have half mind of replying to them saying you are sooo fat but I retrain myself.. now decided to be away from such people, never visit Delhi anymore (which is my in-laws so not missing much here) 😂 In countries like uk, no one has such obsessions. I mean they might get a fake tan but not because someone looked down upon them, they just do it because they want. In India we do fairness treatments because people look down upon you if you are not fair and then fairness treatment is only option

There is a scientific explanation behind the "Casteism & Colorism". Anthropologists say that humans (Homo sapiens who evolved from Dark Skin Monkeys like Chimps) started migrating from Africa (around the Lake Victoria where they evolved FIRST a few million years ago) about 50,000 years ago. This is called Great Migration of Human Species. One Wave went up straight towards Central Asia (now the steppe lands called Kashakstan) and another wave went to Persia then to Afghanistan then to India & finally settled in South India. Some traveled further to Australia via Burma & Malaysia. Hence, if you line up a few dozen people each from Kenya, Kanyakumari & Aboriginal Australia, they will look very much alike in skin color, bone frame etc. In India we call this Original People as Dravidians. After some period of thousands of years, People who traveled to North (Central Asia) got the Mutation of the genes making melonin pigment (this is to avoid bone breaking and killing people in very cold climate). So they looked "Whitish". These White People started moving towards South to North India. These fair skinned People are named the Aryans. These two types of People, Dravidians & Aryans, intermarried for thousands of years to produce children with a hue of skin colors from North to South of India (Kashmiris will be very fair & whitish and Kanyakumari will be dark pigmented. Melanin gene wild type = Dark skin color = Superior for skin health, and the Mutant gene = lighter color = Inferior for skin health as the host mentioned. Yes, most Brahmins are from the North = fair skinned Aryans and a few are dark skinned. Most of the Non-Brahmins are from South dark skinned Dravidians. Upper Caste Aryans always set the Rules of the Game in India historically because of Manu Dharma, & they are the Original Architects of Caste & Color Politics in India......You are right: India has a Mixed Population for Melonin Content in the Skin. There is a Spectrum of color. If people understand the Science of Melonin Pigment, they will know how their destiny was "created"! Lol..

I don't agree with Barkha but i so agree with Ratna. It is no crime to be gora or kala, the idea is to be accepting of all shades of skin. The problem is not girls wanting to use fairness products or tanning products, problem is what is driving that choice. Is it because of social pressure or is it because they want to experiment with their looks. And this applies to not just skin color but all of the cosmetic procedures.

A friend I used to respect he had the most precious baby girl. We went to see the family, the first visit between the feedings, sleeplessness and diaper changes he tells me he was worried the baby would be darker skinned like him, and FYI he is lightly tanned the average Indian brown skin tone. My jaws hit the floor and I am thinking so the fact that this child was born healthy is an afterthought but thank the heavens that she is fair skinned like her mother. My biggest defense for this is the fact that a person could have the flawless most snowy, dewy, pearly, pale as a ghost, desirable skin, if their heart and soul don't match that, what's the point of having beautiful skin?! Anything can happen to physical beauty in an instant, but who you are as an individual inside will not change with seasons. I also have a nephew who is now 10, somehow his tiny soul registered at the age of 5/6 that he is darker toned than the rest of his family and he feels so badly about it. What a shallow world surrounds us. I wish more and more folks around us were wholesome in character and rich in compassion with their choice of words. And instead of waiting for celebrities to instill confidence in our human supplants, that us as parents would be proactive in doing that job well.

Also, while this “Colorism” is more of an issue for females (atleast in India) but guys have to deal with it at some level and hence it’s important that we spread this word across so we could slowly curb this fair skin mania...

I feel the film industry has a large role to play since that’s what the public uses in general as a yardstick to judge beauty and in that sense I find it very troubling when I see that in most dance numbers where there are background dancers, lately I see more and more of Russian/European girls/boys dancing. Why?? Are Indians or people with darker skin tone not good enough...and please don’t pass the blame over to the audience. Yes unfortunately given our prejudices the guys/gals love to these these ultra fair models prancing around but if they had not been presented in the first place the audience wouldn’t have missed it. In trying to hide a bad choreography they use these foreign locales and dancers thus establishing that bias further. People end up thinking rest of the world and the people over there are far more beautiful when the fact is they have their own set of problems or why else would they come to India to dance around the trees in the movies that they don’t understand

Its the Britishers who imparted this racism based on colour...to seem to belong to the noble class the Victorian women used to make their face even more white (not just fair..white) because a lady who had tad bit of tan were the peasants who were out working in fields.. Their class system trickled down to racism in Indian society even after centuries..

Let’s not blame the British for the bias we have . The British are Caucasians and they are all white unlike Asians with different tones of browy. We Indians have always looked down on dark skin and as one of the ladies said associated it with caste . An NRI Indian would perhaps accept a white son in law or daughter in law but never a black son or daughter in law . We have an in born bias and we probably looked upon our colonial invaders with awe partly due to their white skin

Ratnaji.. South Indian actresses are accepted in Bollywood because most of them are North Indians (read fair skinned). South Indians also don't want dark skinned heroines, but want their dark skinned heroes. That's the secret behind south Indian heroes not being accepted in Bollywood and heroines being accepted 😄

It is a myth that the working class/castes were of dark skin in India. Majority of Kings, rich merchants of ancient era were of dark skin... Emperor Akbar was short and wheat coloured (an euphemism for dark complexion). Almost all south Indian kings were dark in colour, including Great Krishna Deva Raya or Shivaji. The paintings of Rajput Kings like Mansingh show them in darker skin. Sha-jahan & Aurangzeb, who actually came from a family of Mangol-Afghan descent were dark. So, I feel India's obsession with light skin may be more recent... i.e. Post colonial rule.

Do you live in America? I was born and raised here. I understand the depth of my country’s history. The Europeans literally enslaved people and ruined a whole culture because they felt liek they could. The slave trade was built upon racism. segregation was built on racism. There is white privilege that exists and people of color suffer greatly in it🥘

First they need to stop it come out talk about it?? We should be proud who we are ?? Actually we have divided in many ways , even colors, birds , foods , religions, clothes, and many more!! A part of this Racial color complex is *subtly perpetuated* at home by the adults - yes by our own parents without articulating it , but still being loud Intacitily. For instance ☘They will want to keep dark skinned house helps , but never a light skinned one , lest he/ she attract attention from the male/female adults. Haven't you heard stories where the housemaid married the Rich young owner where she was help ? These covert, subservient emotional blackmail by the parents discourages the child . It *begins at home*
