Safe Place EMDR

Ойын-сауық

(Week 3 of the "aah!" mini-series). The safe place exercise is a wonderful way to access feelings of physiological safety. This video provides a safe place guided meditation. The safe place imagery can help you feel safe when you actually are safe. The safe place exercise is utilized in EMDR therapy, but can also be used by anyone to increase their ability to feel peaceful.
This video is part of a three week mini-course to help you access feelings of peace and safety. Participants in this three-week course found these techniques easy to implement and very effective. They reported feeling significantly calmer, less anxious, and lighter at the end of the three weeks.

Dear Barbara, I wanted to say thank you for this entire series. This is my go to playlist when I feel especially anxious. I'm also one of those that doesn't feel safe inside and use an imaginary place in this exercise. But I'll practice as you've recommended to feel safe using the diaphragmatic breaths and grounding techniques. Once again thank you for creating these resources.

11:48 I hadn’t realized it before, but I think this is why I’ve always had trouble with safe space visualization. I’ve never been anywhere where I’ve felt completely safe. Even now, I always feel like my peace could be abruptly interrupted and taken away from me at any moment. I’ve always had to live in a constant state of hyper-awareness, which has recently manifested itself as severe social anxiety.

Hello, I am an EMDR therapist and just completed the calm secure place with a client. I was looking for something to send to her as an in between session homework assignment since she liked it so much and ran into this video. I hope you don't mind me sharing it. Thank you so much for creating this video! Diaphragmatic breathing and visualization techniques are some of the skills that I teach a lot amongst others such as DBT skills. Thanks for allowing me to share!

I just went through some pretty major life events, and to cope with increasing feelings of not being safe - especially since one of those events was moving 2.5 hours away, just me and my cat - I sought out some therapeutic coping techniques, specifically to help with feeling safe enough to fall asleep and feeling safe in a new environment. I found out about the strong connections between PTSD and not feeling safe from your Hyperarousal (Six Steps to Help Now) video, it made a very big impact on me. I'm one of those "never really felt safe" people, but I have actually had some places that I have felt were... sanctuaries. This might sound silly at first, but work with me. For me, these safe places were places I made in Minecraft. I spent hours and hours in these places, they were a second home, and they were a place I could retreat to that was always safe... as long as you stay indoors at night! I was inspired to create my own Zen Garden safe place in Minecraft, so that at night I could visualize a place that I knew very well, because I crafted it pixel by pixel. And I know it's safe, because I turned the difficulty to "Peaceful"! 😆 I came back to your videos to see if you had a dedicated safe place guided meditation, to help as I visited this place in my imagination before sleep. Aaaaaand that brought me here! I will admit, I haven't watched the other videos in the aah! mini-series. I have only been doing this exercise, because it fit into my sleep ritual really well and that was easier to integrate into my schedule as a habit. I have been watching this every night for the past almost 2 weeks? Something close to that. Two moments of this video stand out as being most beneficial to me. The first was the physical sensation of the butterfly tapping. The muscle release and relaxation. When I do this exercise I am noticeably more physically relaxed after, especially around the lower back and legs. The breathing does help a lot with this, but the tapping added in was like... "whoa, haven't felt that relaxed in a minute..." The second was the reminder about how this whole process is about being gentle. My mind wanders a lot during meditation and right before sleep, it makes falling asleep really tough. The reminder to be gentle (and that it's okay if it didn't work) is very helpful to me because I often beat myself up for that. Every reminder I get to be gentler with myself when I'm really trying is invaluable to me. If you have any questions for me about my experience so far, I'd be glad to share. If you're looking for a video idea, may I suggest... a guided safe place meditation specifically for falling asleep? (I have a little bit of a vested interest in this... 😉) This is turning into a novel, but I did want to say - Thank you. I would most likely be a complete paranoid wreck right now without the insights you've helped me discover through this and your Hyperarousal video. You're doing really great work, and I'm glad we have generous people like you to share these tools with those of us out here who really need them. ❤

Wow. Thank you for letting me know how impactful this video and the hyperarousal one were for you. I'm so pleased that the butterfly tapping is working for you! Awesome! Also, your suggestion is very timely. I actually recently joined a sleep and meditation app and have begun producing some sleep content. I don't yet have a safe place sleep one, but that is a great idea. If you are interested in trying the app: www.aurahealth.io/guestpass/barbara-heffernan this link gives 30 days free. You are probably the first one to know this since i just joined, and am building up some content on there before I spread the word more. I actually like some of the sleep content they have on there by other coaches. And stay tuned, I'll try to put one up on KZread as well.
