Bullay Shah (1680-1757 is more than a sufi. He is subcontinent’s greatest exponent of peace and coexistence. His contempt for the clergy shows how little things have changed in the last 300 years and how the essence, the true spirit of religion, love & goodwill for humankind, has been hijacked by the right-wing fringe. His message simply, is that, the path to understanding the divine starts with looking within. Sharing a kafi by Bullay Shah performed by Abida Parveen which is her most brilliant performance. Have made an attempt at translating this performance and am also sharing alternate translations done by others so that you can enjoy the kafi to the fullest. Jay rab milda naataya-n dhoteya-n tay rab milda dadduan machiyaa-n noo-n Jay rab milda jangal phireya-n tay rab milda gaaiyaan vachiyan noon. Vay mian Bulleya rab onhaa-n noo-n milda Atay dileya-n sachhiyaa-n achiyya-n noon. My translation: If one could find God by (mere) bathing and cleansing, (then) frogs and fish would have found him long time ago If one could find God only roaming wilderness (then) cows and calves would have found him long time ago; O Bullay-yaa, only those will find GOD whose hearts are pure and true) Translation found on youtube /username - Umayr Masud: If washing and bathing were the ways to God Then Fish and frogs would have been closest to Him If wandering in the woods were the way to God. Then God would be closest to cows and calves. O Bullay-shah, only those who are pure and true at heart, find the way to God Translation by Fuad Usman Khan found on net: If the divine is found through ablutions surely frogs and fish would find him first if the divine is hidden in jungles, the cattle would have discovered him by now, O Bulleh, the divine is found by those with pure and true heart Parh Parh ilm hazaar kitabaa-n Kadee aprnay aap noo-n parhyaa naee-n Jaaan jaan vardhay mandir maseetee Kadhee man aprnay vich varyha naee-n Avaain larda ain shaitaan day naal bandayaa Kadee nafs aprnay naal larhya naeen Aakhay peer bullay shah Aasmaanee parhnai-n Jehra man vich vasda aye Onhoon pharyaa naeen Saadhay vayray aaya kar Yaar subh sham dost subh sham Haadi subh sham My translation (1) (You may have) read countless books but have you ever read (what is within) your Self, (You) rush to your temples, your mosques but you have never entered your own heart your quarrels with satan are useless as you have never fought with your own desires Says the sage bullay shah, you yearn for the one in heavens (but) you do not grab the one living in your heart Come to my abode, my love My love please stay, stay day and night My friend please stay, stay day and night My guide, please stay, stay day and night Translation (2) on youtube /username - Umayr Masud: You may have read thousands of books, have you had a glance at your self, they rush time and again into mosques and temples but they never enter their own hearts. Have you ever read your Self? You have gone to mosque and temple. Have you ever visited your soul?
