It actually reminds me of a lot of the great stuff that used to come on a cable channel called “the military channel” circa 2004 or so.

I visited Iraq several times and could see some of the things that are shown is this documentary with my own eyes. My first visit was in 1969, just one year after the Baathist revolution of 1968. My impression was than that the people of Iraq thought that it was one of the many revolutions and that a new one would follow. Than I came back in 1971 and saw things went good through the efforts of the Baath to modernize the country. By than I noticed already a great support for Saddam who was leading the progress. I returned in 1989 and 1990 ans saw the change into a police state, with lack on several goods. I remember to buy bananas you had to cross wbole Baghdad. But Iraq was undoubtly a safe place. I returned last year and saw a population that for the first time in decades was hoping for a better future, although there has to be done a lot on infrastructure and education. My love for this country always will remain. In april I will return to visit all my friends again.

We used to roll past the cemetery in Tikrit where Saddam's family was buried on a regular basis, and our interpreter pointed out their crypts; although I have no idea if he was telling the truth. It seemed like everything around there belonged to/was related to Saddam, one way or another. Also between Samarra & Tikrit was an ancient Sumarian ruin that Saddam had ordered excavated early in his reign, but it was never finished because of the wars. Just being there is one of the most memorable experiences of my life; that area has so much history, I found it difficult to concentrate on the job sometimes (especially in the date palm plantations along the Tigris). When Saddam was found, we were only a few km away, on cordon duty while another building/compound was being searched for him. I remember hearing about it on the net, and everybody got very nervous because they were worried Saddam loyalists would try to retaliate. Nothing else happened for us that day, though.

when were you there??....I was there in 2006-2007 (part of the Big Surge) as a combat medic stationed at Camp Cropper where the Butcher of Baghdad did some prison time before getting hanged...I even saw the cell where he was held for a while....

there is way more than just "whatever America touches goes to hell". I think what we have learned from the middle east is that Arabs useless and are too tribal/sectarian to unite and the only way to rule the Arabs is through sheer violence and terror like Saddam did. America intervened in Korea and south Korea today is a great economic power. America intervened in Taiwan and Taiwan is a very rich and prosperous nation. America intervened in Vietnam and even though they lost Vietnam today is a rapidly growing economic power. America had dominated over Germany for decades and today still has military bases and yet today its a major world economic power. America crushed Japan, nuked it and today Japan is a world economic power. I think Iraq and Arab countries were already divided and had people ready to tear each other apart however they were ruled by strongmen willing to annihilate anyone who dares stands up to them. That says more about the Arabs then the Americans.

Europe was at constant never ending conflict while most of the middle east was prosperous and relatively stable. Conflict follows geographic cycles and poverty breeds radicalism. Hell we see Christian fundamentalist American public figures and policies today and its getting worse with the fundamentalists openly talking about Civil War being inevitable. Humans are predisposed for conflict given certain circumstances, people in the middle east are no more or less so than anyone else, their situation at this brief time in history is just different than the west. 😊

@@sunkings5972 I agree with you. Infact some of the world's worst wars have been in Europe and Europeans have been in a never-ending state of war with each other. However, My argument is that the middle east is also very divided either among sectarian lines, ethnic lines or tribal lines. I remember a few years back two shia tribal groups clashed in iraq over tribal issues. My point is that even if America never touched Iraq the country would still be divided, and tensions would still run high. America went in thinking they can force these people to get a long but you cant force a people that distrust, dislike and hate each other. And European border's Don't really mean anything since one province will have a shia majority, another a christian majority, another a sunni majority and its dotted around each other. Even during the "islamic golden age" there were still wars, violence and conflict and you cant blame the west if two arab lads decided to wake up one day and hate each other.

Well he seems messed up in the head from his abuse by his step dad. He was prepared to murder political opponents. His earlier reign was just to get things in order so he could eliminate his opponents without them seeing it coming. Basically these dictators have to put on a show for the first few years.

As an Indian Hindu, he is much respected amongst us. I remember we putting up posters for him in our schools as greatest hero. I myself documented second Iraq war untill death of Saddam Hussein during my school times. All articles published in Hindi daily during that war I have it. And yes those Hindi newspaper praised Saddam like their own hero. He could have been great leader.

Watching this video somehow made me decide to compare the sizes of England, America and Iraq. England is only 400 miles long and 190 mile wide at the most (4 times shorter and 13 times less wide than America). Perhaps, but he invaded Kuwait, built statues to himself, and instigated a genocide... or two. Plus, I'm not sure the middle east was so much "better" in the 70s and 80s, its just technology has allowed us to see much more of the devastation. That said US intelligence agencies were complete trash in the 70s-00s. Perhaps a bit better now but it's critical for Americans to support moderate, informed, and compassionate leaders instead of hard line ideologues that talk about how evil everyone they don't like are.

in 2004, i was stationed in South Tikrit. My FOB was across the street from where both of Saddams sons were buried. The Base i was on had an airstrip that was totally fenced because Saddam would fly wild animals from Africa and then Hunt them on the airstrip. My office was called the Butcher Shop for a good reason.

If need be they add the last name (which is the tribe’s name). Sometimes the full name is first name, father’s name and last name (tribe name). In Saddam’s case his last name is Tikriti which is also where he is from

I think before the rail yard would attempt the big adoption change they would ask to see how the rotational alignments of our national forest would be with our creeks so they can see if they can replenish or restructure different areas for them if they need pit stops or need refill and stations or layover stations

Sadamm Hussein was a cruel beast, a terrible Tyrant . Brutal or not, he was able to keep the deep religious and ethnic factions under control. With the appropriate Intrrnational pressures, in order to survive he could have become an element of stability in the region. As he had done before, namely while containing the different religious and Political factions at bay. Gone the repressive apparatus, the entire country fell appart -- bombs and killings promoted by rival factions occurred every day. Reinforcing Iran's position as a major regional force and setting the stage for total chaos in the Middle East. American Tax Payers spent billions in Iraq, tens of thousands -- perhaps hundreds of thousands -- elements of the Population were killed in that hell. Not to mention thousands of American casualties, dead and wounded . The Second Iraq War opened the gates for the creation of a plethora of terrorist Groups --- namely, Hammas in Gaza heavely supported by Iran. In my view, the 2003 War and its aftermath were terrible for the local Populations, for the West and World Peace.

This man has a lot of respect among arab nations until now , i have seen a show interviewed many which really respect him ,and even in Iraq right now he still popular and beloved . America assessinated him because he threatened their affairs in the middle east and when the war against Iran was pouring in their right way,they supported it but invasion of kwuit means all oil will be under his control and this a red flag for America.this man was the only one who had the ability to stand against Israel and defense Palestine.

It was a good lesson to learn, that you cant force freedom and democracy on a people. Perhaps it has to come organically, from the citizens, for democracy to be possible.

There is no political agenda or bias in this doc; it's just a brief overview of Sadams life and his rule... long story short, he was sadistic and was the root cause of Iraqs problems, though for a brief moment, he helped build Iraq to its height till his choices messed it all up...
