Sacred Herbs for Samhain

The Sacred Herbs for Samhain that I am using this year are Rosemary, Mugwort, Wormwood and Rowan. As part of the celebrations I am making a Parshell Cross (a Samhain Cross) and will be preparing a feast. After carving a turnip I will add the turnip flesh to a hearty vegetable stew; make an Apple Pie and my favourite of all, Colcannon made with our own potatoes and our own kale. All recipes are below.
If you would like to know more about how I celebrate Samhain, consider joining me for the Samhain Festival on the Wise Woman Way training. This is a transpersonal course connecting us with the plants and Irish goddesses for healing and self development. More details here - www.danusirishherbgarden.com/...
I also teach an Introduction to Herbal Medicine which is a six months long, self-paced course. The course includes growing and working with plants and creating remedies. More information here - www.danusirishherbgarden.com/...
The Weed Handbooks are my two books that introduce you to the wild medicinal plants that can be found almost everywhere in the world. Regarded by many as unwanted, they are some of the most medicinal plants we could have. www.danusirishherbgarden.com/...
Thanks to Lol Hardiman for the lovely music and the filming and editing. You can hear more of Lol's music here on youtube - / @lolhardiman5247 and you can also find him at his website lolhardimanmusic.com/
For our Samhain celebrations I will be making a Jack O'Lantern by hollowing out a turnip and adding the flesh to a hearty, veggie stew. To make the stew, saute the onions and garlic, add diced turnip, carrots, parsnips and pour in some home made stock. After 15 minutes of simmering, add the potatoes and some herbs such as Thyme, Sage, Rosemary, salt and pepper. Alternatively put the stew mix into a pastry and make a pie, serve with Colcannon. To make the Colcannon, boil enough potatoes for everyone and when they are ready, drain, dry and mash with milk and butter until soft and creamy. While the potatoes are boiling, slice some kale and boil until tender, then drain. Add the kale to the mashed potato and mix well. Serve with knobs of butter on top of the potatoes when you serve the pie. You could make gravy for this if you wish. We follow this with Apple and Blackberry pie. With this menu, I am using the abundance of the root vegetables and the apple harvest with hedgerow fruits.
I was lucky enough to receive the red silken thread from Rita van der Kant-Klomp, author of the book "Ardeche Immortelle" - more information at

I have also been struggling with what to focus on in my herb garden for the past two years. Today, I am suggested your video. Looking forward to watching the rest of your channel's videos! The cross is lovely, reminds me a little of a 'god's eye' design. If you have a chance would you advise me what to do about a tree that will be cut down this winter? It is a huge, old and sickly elm. I have stood with my hands touching her and told her thank you...please let ALL your energy return to the earth as you go dormate for the winter...as it's soon time for your form to be taken down, but your energy is welcome and appreciated to stay here. Am I missing anything important to add to this? I have repeated it several times. Thanks so much for any help and enjoy your family celebration!

I think what you have done and said is beautiful, so thoughtful. Perhaps make a little offering of flower petals or oat flakes to the tree spirit to show your gratitude for all the joy she has brought over the years. She will now bring forth new forms of life as she rots into the soil; or perhaps she will warm you during next year's winter

We didn’t do the American Halloween thing this year, we went full boar Celt, no candy, no decorations the lights were off. Instead I made the traditional foods, mashed potatoes, roasted turnips, kale with lots of garlic. I also baked a Maple pumpkin bread. My husband and I had a bonfire in the back yard in our fire cauldron that has moons and stars carved into it. We sat under the stars had lovely drinks and a very good time. We talked about family and friends that had passed. We have two amazing apple trees so there were apple treats as well, thank you for that in depth information, this video was my inspiration!

Thank you for this beautiful and instructive video. I have made a dream pillow with dried lavender and mugwort and will now make the parshall cross from the rowan. My heart makes a jump from all the harvest, the beetroots, carrots, Jerusalem artichoke, pumpkins and all kind of herbs for tea and tinctures. My kitchen of my farm is an exploded cosiness of meaningful life for which I give thanks every day. And thanks to you, I love your way of life and your stories and explanations. ❤

I never knew about Saimhan. I grew up in the Church and was always taught that divination was bad and evil, bc it says so in the Bible, but I never knew what it actually was. You make it seem like a nice part of cultural celebrations. I didn’t even know where our modern fall traditions come from.

Another enjoyable video. I am just noticing the door latch on your white door. I have a couple of identical door latches on my cabin doors. I didn't build this cabin, Quaker community members did about 45 years (or more) ago, old style I suppose using those simple door latches. First snow fell here two days ago, accompanied by our first light killing frost. Winter isn't far off now. My garden is taken care of, fire wood cut and hauled, water boxes winterized, etc. etc. After months of garden and yard work I find myself feeling lazy now that everything is pretty much taken care of for the coming short days and winter cold. Enjoy your Samhain celebration, and that colcannon you are making (I need to try that recipe). Stay warm and dry. Cheers!

Hello Terri 💗 I’m so happy you share these traditions and history of Samhain. Here in the US Halloween is mostly just another money making marketing opportunity = the children dress up in costumes and rush around collecting candy from house to house (trick or treat). I have been reading about the history / traditions and so thrilled to hear you speak about this special time of year. My great, great grandfather, Thomas Ball (Scots-Irish) was a Mountain Man who settled in Pennsylvania and married a Cherokee Woman Metta my great great Grandmother 🥰. History, Traditions, Roots, Customs have been lost here by design! Just like almost every place else on planet earth. Funny when we were kids our parents would have Halloween parties and we would bob for apples which was lots of fun…knowing where this comes from is nice. Learning about making a Parshal Cross is also a special treat. I’ve been looking at your previous videos also about Samhain which I Love. Enjoy celebrating with your friends and family during Samhain 💗🥰💗 Peace and Love from Florida, US

Peace and love to you too. It is a terrible shame that so many customs from ll cultures are being forgotten and lost and everything becoming so homogenised. We need our customs and traditions to remind us of who we are and to bring us together in community. Glad to hear from you xx
