Saber Rider & the Star Sheriffs: The Next Voltron? Lol Nope

Ойын-сауық

Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs is an animated television space western, similar to the series The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers and BraveStarr that aired 52 episodes from 1987 to 1988.
The show was based on Star Musketeer Bismarck (星銃士ビスマルク, Seijūshi Bisumaruku), a Japanese anime series created by Studio Pierrot.
Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs was brought over to the US in the hopes of replicating the success the company had with Voltron. It didn't work out that way.

Funny story: I went to a con one time to get a voice recording from Peter Cullen. While everyone else was asking for Optimus Prime clips I asked for the Ramrod transformation speech. Cullen completely forgot this show existed and needed me to write down the script. 😂

Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs was my first introduction to Japanese Anime when I was a kid... There are five German Audiobook-CDs of Saber-Rider, which are a continuation of the stroy, taking place some years after Nemesis got his ass kicked back in the phantom-zone (as the parallel world was called in Germany). it had the original voice actors, e.g. Christian Tramitz, Katrin Fröhlich, Florian Halm und Ekkehardt Belle - the only exception is: Arne Eltzholz, who doesn't reprise his role as Jesse Blue - because he was ill at that time, so his role got recast and got played by Phillip Moog. By the way, if anyone is interested: The German version goes: "Hoch damit und raus mit ihnen, volle Energie und fertig ist die Ramrod Infanterie." (Up with it and out with them - full energiey and the Ramrod infanterie is completed).

Add-on: What I also need to mention, is, that apparently the German Dub was sometimes way funnier than the American or Japanese Dub - they often poked fun at themselves and created some really cool sentences, something like "Nä, wat simmer wieder charming heute" (Well, we are charming today!), "Der ist so wichtig wie ein Arne auf dem Eltzholz" (He is as important as an Arne on the Eltzholz - which is a pun at Arne Eltzholz, who provided the first voice of Jesse Blue), or ""Na isses denn die possibility!" Okay, one has to admit, that this cartoon was dubbed in the eighties, when this kind of dubbing was the way, we dubbed shows. I think, it started in the seventies, with a little TV-Show called "The Persuaders", which was a crime-show starring Roger Moore and Tony Curtis. When it was dubbed for the German market, rebranded as "Die Zwei" (The Two or probably more fitting: "Those two") a guy named "Rainer Brandt" started the dubbing process, introducing "Schnodderdeutsch", a mixture of Gutter Language, teenage slang and other sources. "Die Zwei" used with sentences like "Einen Russischen Landwein, bitte" (Russian country wine - "they meant Vodka")," „Lass doch die Sprüche, die setzen ja die nächste Folge ab!“[ (Stop talking like that, they'll cancel us next episode!), or "Sprich mal was schneller, Du bist sonst nicht mehr synchron." (talk faster - or you're not synchronous anymore), which of course had something to do with the problem of Dubbing in general. This version got so popular, that even Tony Curtis and Roger Moore heard of it and wanted Rainer Brandt to write new scripts for "The persuaders", which unfortunately never happened. Lots of Shows and movies, that were dubbed in Germany, got the same treatment - which was not surprising, since Rainer Brandts way of working with the Dubbing was influential. Even Star Trek - which in the english version had some funny lines, too - got the Schnodderdeutsch-Treatment - and, so did Saber Rider.

@@deraltetrekkie6088 And don't forget about Colt suffering from the "Tramitz-Syndrome" for which there is sadly no cure :) (With Christian Tramitz being the german voice of Colt and the aforementioned Syndrome being his constant chasing of the ladies whenever they were on shore leave for those not familiar with the german version) Also a lot of the original german cast went on to become quite the household names mainly in dubbing but also some live action acting: Christian Tramitz (Colt): well known actor, the voice of Marlin in Finding Nemo, Ted McGinley on Married with Children, to name but a few Arne Elsholtz (Jessie Blue): He was the regular german voice of Tom Hanks, among others, sadly he died a few years ago, his replacement on SRATSS for the above mentioned CDs is Philipp Moog (Ewan Mc Gregor and Barney Stinson) Norbert Gastell (Commander Eagle): He voiced J.J.Jameson on the 90's Spider-Man Cartoon, was an accomplished actor and the first german voice of Homer Simpson until he too sadly died. Florian Halm (Fireball): lots of voice work, Castiel on Supernatural among others Kathrin Fröhlich (April): Regular german voice of Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow among others. Ekkehardt Belle (Saber Rider): Has been acting since the early 70s, his voice work include Lorenzo Lamas on Renegade and Kevin Sorbo as Hercules Mannfred Erdmann (Ramrod/Narrator): This is the only instance in which the english version wins in my opinion, after all it's Peter Cullen he's up against, and while Mr. Erdmann did a lot of voice work too, he was the german voice of BA on the A-Team, and I just learned he's dead too, crap. In the end, who really wins, Optimus Prime or Zoidberg? (which is my point of contention for the english version winning here) Basically magic happened during the recording of the german version because the producers had the poor judgement of leaving them alone in the studio and letting them do their thing which led to something special, which is also the reason for the big popularity here in germany. Wow, this got longer than intended, hope it sheds some light on things for everyboy, guess I'm off now to watch a few episodes. (and for everybody with access to german Amazon Prime, it's on there)

I love Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs - I'm still using Fireball in my profile picture! It was on at an obnoxiously early time in the morning in the UK on the Super Channel on cable TV, like 5.30 or 6am but was worth it. As a brit having Saber Rider as lead character was awesome, even if he is an unholy mashup of English and Scottish tropes, Colt is a legend and comedy gold. Ramrod as a giant cowboy robot whose entire chest turned into guns was glorious overkill. The show was fun, looked and sounded great (that music is fantastic) and had everything except success. Also I totally wanted to marry April, she was cute, kicked ass and could build super robots. Perfection.

I believe it was also popular here in Portugal, at least Saber Rider was broadcasted way before than Voltron and it was both broadcasted dubbed in European Portuguese and subbed (the original Voltron series was just subbed). If we think about it, Bismark/Saber Rider as a mecha anime was original by choicing a Western motif for mechs and worldbuilding.

@@superomegaprimemk2 well from your info I would say that you wouldn't have had the chance to see much anime like this in the mid 80s, at least not here in the UK. I'm older by about a decade, and the closest genre stuff that 80s British TV offered was mostly Gerry Anderson, with a bit of French/Spanish/Italian animated stuff, my sister loved Dogtanian and Cities of Gold. When I was really young, mid 70s, I remember some weird east European, Polish or Czech I'm not sure, kids dramas shown usually Saturday afternoons. The one that really sticks out was about this school boy who built a sentient laser that he kept in a shoebox under his bed... so yeah. I did get to see quite a bit of Japanese anime though, because most summers the whole family would visit relatives in Hong Kong and we'd see these amazing Japanese cartoons dubbed into Cantonese, so I saw a lot of mecha, which is my favourite to this day. You have to love how Voltron was so successful and beloved that it spawned three American produced cartoon shows and is a well known piece of pop culture, and Star Saber just gets an unfinished video game. At least with Voltron, they released DVD's of Go-Lion and Dairugger, but I can't even find anything outside of the theme song of Bismark. Which slaps, by the way. I wouldn't be surprised if the Star Saber merchandise was released in European countries.

A large toy(about the size of metroplex/scorpinoc) of ramrod was definitely released in the UK as my neighbour had one. None of knew what it was other than a not transformers or good transforming robot thing as we had never seen or even heard of the show until a couple of years later when we found a vhs of the first few episodes. British TV was kind of weird for the 80s cartoons, I can't recall transformers or gi Joe ever being shown although there was always someone who claimed to have seen it at like 6am on a weekday morning. On the other hand stv used to show some pretty obscure stuff in the few weeks that separated the start of the Scottish and English summer holidays.

Saber Rider was a staple here in Germany and is still one of the most beloved shows of the time. The reason is the German dubbing - it was semi-scripted and absolutely hilarious. Colt, Fireball and Saber Rider are voiced by three of the best voice actors in the business who went on to voice become the German dubs of Colin Ferell, Jude Law and other. If you even speak a speck of German, give it a try, it is so much better than the English version.

There was a website where people could vote on which show they wanted to come back and Saber Rider (and Galaxy Rangers) were miles already of everything else month after month. Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs is a cartoon/concept and toy line that I would’ve loved as a child. Being a massive fan of Voltron and growing up in the 80s, I’m very surprised that I never knew about this show or the toys that went along with it. This was one of those cartoon series that was popular in Europe and Asia. Just looking at the Japanese toy commercial invokes all of those childhood feelings you get when you’ve seen something you really like and want. Thank you Dan and Toy Galaxy for sharing this lost 80s gem with us. So now I’m wondering if I should fall down the internet rabbit hole looking for toys based off the Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs.
