What’s absolutely insane is that the actual charge of the Winged Hussars was 3 times LARGER than the Ride of the Rohirim from Return of the King. Theoden led 6,000 horsemen on-screen, while the Winged Hussars led 18,000. If there was one moment in all history I could see in person, it would be that one.

To be fair 6000 spears was less than half of what Theoden expected. With enough time I'm pretty sure he would have muster a force equal or bigger.

Got the halberd and leather armor all ready.

On September 12, 1683, the Polish King John III. Sobieski lead the army of holy league to liberate Vienna from the Ottoman siege. He led the largest cavalry attack in history over the sides of the Kahlenberg with around 34.000 riders, including around 14.000 winged Hussars. This attack is also said to have been the model for the attack by the Rohirrim on the Pelennor Fields in "Lord of the Rings" (in the Movie had the Rohirrim "only" 6000 Riders).

no supposing. Tolkien was a historic professor. the siege of vienna is accepted as grounding for this. numbers are to be varied, granted, but the concept..for sure! (even though Erkenbrand of the westfold lead a gathering of mixed infantry and cavalry, he had rounded up as a true captain of the mark, following tremendous losses)

There was never 14 thousand hussars at once during siege was 3000 of them and 15000 of the rest of cavalry.

I’m a simple man, I see anything with Sabaton or Tolkien’s works I watch and like. I see the two combined I make a private playlist to watch again and again.

Damn, looking at the battles stats we can count that: 1 hussar means: -4 foes killed, 8 wounded, 16 escaped. 1 *winged* hussar means: -4 foes killed, 8 wounded, 32 escaped. 1 *winged* hussar with *Sabaton* playing at a backstage means: -9999 enemies killed, 9999 wounded, rest of them escaped.

*Rohan: saves itself from annihilation (At Helms-Deep); then saves the rest of middle earth (Minis-Tirith).*

There is a certain level of (maybe unintentional) synchronicity: The Battle on the Fields of the Pellenor *is* based on the Battle of Vienna when the Holy League crushed the Ottoman siege. So there we have a nice little Ouroboros bent unto it's own tail ;). Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

Actually the defenders had an even chance against the attackers it normally takes a 10 to 1 for their to be a even fight in a siege

why would they? by that point there was pretty much no chance theyd lose. Rohan charged, knowing it was hopeless and theyd get slaughtered.

It's still two mumaks

the scariest part about cavalry charge - killed by horse crashing on ur skull instead of the rider sword/spear. that's what make cavalry unit so deadly n so effective in battle. Sobieski n his army indeed had terrain advantage, just like Theoden with his Rohirrim - came down from higher ground n charge into enemies rank.

The moment you realize that mordors might was broken if not for the arrival of the Eastman. And even then, the damage done to mordors capacity to wage an assault was crippled. It was not gondor that broke the orcs. It was the Horse Lords of Rohan. (Not to disparage the elite of Gondor. But for a ostensibly backwater nation in comparison you would expect Rohan to be able to muster troops enough to break the siege of minas tirith. And theoden said it was less than Half what he'd hoped for. Horse Lords are badass is all im saying. )

THANK YOU for ending this video with one of my Top 3 favorite Lord of the Rings movie moments! I will NEVER get tired of seeing Eowyn OWN her Destiny!!

the battle for osgiliath would be great or helms deep or maybe even the fellowship vs lurz and his uruks at amon hen cause boromir couldnt resist the ring but HELL HE BITE LIKE A SHARK!

-both ottomans and uruk hai used explosives against walls -vienna garrison were outnumbered like the rohan garrison -both rohirrim and winged hussars coming down the mountainside -vienna garrison opened doors and charged to ottomans when winged hussars charged to like theoden aragorn charged when rohirrim arrived -both sultan and saruman sealed the fate of janissaries and uruk hais -after that war saruman lost and turks never able to progress into europe again -gandalf used magic to dazzle urukhais but historically polish metal armor dazzle the janisseries

"expansion" was doomed. Ottomans could barely work with one another let alone push much further into Europe away from their supply lines. most historians agree on that.
