The story of the video explained in my own opinion At the start of the video, I believe the knight that yelled and stuff did something great like take out a dozen of his foes by himself, the gods saw potential in this one so they granted him strength and power Back then, knights were seen as the “tanks” of the battlefield, they did the most damage because of their strength and the fact that they were armored, when that knight at the beginning put his sword in the ground i believe it was to preserve his own soul and battle spirit Centuries later in WW1 an explosion hits the knights old armor (likely a temporary vessel for the spirit), and the knights spirit is reawoken, but in the form of combat spirit and courage, The spirit quickly gets adjusted to tanks and lends the pilots its strength and courage provided they can use it correctly, the spirit searches for a worthy vessel for its power, it can’t leave its leftover power to just anyone, it needs a worthy tank crew The spirit however does not have much time in the world, after all at the end of the day it is a spirit and must pass on sooner or later Before you say im full of crap I took 3 facts into accident Fact-1: at 3:22 the spirit was about to go into that tank but it blew up, Fact-2: The spirit leaves each tank right before they get blown up Fact-3: At the end of the video, the spirit finds its TRUE and worthy successor, and reforms the tank to mirror how the knight looked long ago Anyway thats my interpretaron, feel free to correct me!

I was just about to comment the same thing, loved that cross-cultural relation in the theme. Knights had to be cunning and resourceful to survive attacks their armor wouldn't protect them from, while planning on the fly when and where to strike in order to compensate for their bulkier attacks, of course only those who were great at both lived on to tell their tales. It's often overlooked in modern media because it's not 'flashy', and most don't even consult historians about how mentally intense and physically demanding medieval combat was, this was a fun reminder of extreme times indeed.

I really like this interpretation, I thought the spirit might have been the human spirit of innovation or something. Maybe bravery, but this is a new idea I hadn’t seen yet and it’s really good. And a 4:20(yes I know funny) I think the spirit helps wake the crew up in time, think about how it didn’t leave yet, it knew they’d win

I'm not usually a fan of Heavy Metal, per se, but SABATON rocks! I can understand the lyrics, and their chosen subject matter demands attention. And the videos are well put together and executed perfectly!

i like how they put effort in, unlike some other bands. they use actual tanks in realistic settings, they use correct dialogue (the FV4005 that appears when joakim yells "Tank Destroyer 12 O'Clock!" is indeed a 183mm tank destroyer, and the other scenes (i.e. ISU-152 vs Ferdinand/Elefant) are realistic as well. this shows they actually care about their music. respect.

Legend tells of a great knight who was said to be given the power of the gods. He smited any foes who stood against him. The fog was so thick amongst the haze of the battle that the tank had lost its way, then suddenly a shell burst right in front of the tank, disabling it for a moment, bjt little did the crew know, they had found the legendary knight. His sprit was still entombed in the armour where it still lay, until now.

The shell had burst open the armour, cracking it, then the knights spirit sprang from it, casting a golden light onto the tank, sneering down, then another shell burst, catching the spirits eye, and sneering back at the gun. It was infuriated that it had been awaken from its slumber, and, out of mercy, intertwined itself with the tank, taking control of the mechanical beast with all its otherworldly powers, driving it forward until it could not go farther anymore, for it was only machine, and as the machine itself died, the spirit lept through the ages of warfare, lending itself to whoever angered it, from the deserts of North Africa, to the fields of Prokorovkha, to the shores of Normandy, to the very fields of France where it came from, it carried itself and the side of who was under its care to victory until the last breath of its carrier. The legend was thus know as, The Steel Commander. On its final battle, the last shell, the last bullet, the last man, the last breath, all had been expended, and on the husk of the tank, was inscribed: "The Steel Commander. Whoever shall be imbued with thine power, shall know victory, whoever shall face me, shall taste defeat. Fear me."

I can't stop listening to this song. Y'all know how Crazy Train musically sounds like a steaming locomotive on the tracks? Steel Commanders sounds like tank treads rolling over anything in its path with the riff backed perfectly by the double-bass. Like Dreadnought and Bismarck make you feel like you're riding the waves on a man-made leviathan, Steel Commanders makes you feel like a tank commander.

That part where Tommy and Joakim are singing together, absolutely my favorite part of the song. Got that memorized for the work routine!

After 2 years I have noticed an interesting thing - when the guys from SABATON goes to the Centurion tank, Tina is then seen performing alone for the rest of the video. Dunno why but I really like how this video is structured.

That full plate armor at the beginning is more historically accurate than most Hollywood big budget costumes

@@lhermteg2607 Sure, the helmet is a bit strange and that little mail skirt thing coming out of the breast plate looks out of place. That cape is cool but very strange and even the breast plate looks good but it's still a bit weird. The pauldrons and arm protection look cool but they don't look very functional. It works for the video, it wouldn't work in a fight, but it's better than a lot of movies.

They tend to just take some modern bit of clothing and add either chainmail or random rivets to it to make it look like actual armor. It always amazes me how bad it always is, because I've gotten better kit off Craigslist. Granted, the build quality is garbage, but it at least looks somewhat passable

@@wesley8055 It's a pretty common trope. So common, it's referred to as Chasing the Dragon. I've never taken drugs, but I know what the phenomenom is called, and what it means.

I like how rather than focusing on a particular war, battle or unit, this song is an evolving tale of tank infamy over a hundred years. Gives me hope my song ideas for combat engineers from Rome to ww2 will someday be taken up by the band.

Come to think of it, the spirit did not abandon tanks and their crews on it's own desire just to spite them. It was looking for the best warrior there is, the one, who can control the battlefield and bend it's course to their will. Mark IV was the first steel commander spirit found and clinged to them, granting it's crew the courage and confidence - essential traits for those, who man these tin cans. But as soon, as Mark IV got careless and fell into a ditch, spirit left it to die from artillery direct fire. No good warrior lets oneself into disadvantage, even more so - on it's own carelessness. Sherman was the second steel commander, that got attention of the spirit. At first, it was all good - tank masterfully dispatched the enemy and moved on. However, it got too cocky and went straight under crossfire of another two tanks Sherman never noticed. And so spirit left it as well to die, as no good warrior lets corridor vision get control over oneself. Then SU-152 barreled on Prokhorovka, attentively and effectively killing it's adversaries. Spirit had high hopes for this one, yet attention and awareness do not kill enemy - steady aim and accurate fire do. Crew of SU-152 had a chance to eliminate Ferdinand, but missed due to smoke and haste to shoot. Spirit left it too - haste kills. Literally. Panther was the new protege of the spirit. So far it was the best steel commander spirit ever found: sure aim, careful positioning, situational awareness. Churchill fell with a blast, one of newcoming Shermans followed suit. Yet Panther was fighting a hopeless fight, spirit left it as soon as Panther got encircled and destroyed. Moral of it's story - good warrior knows when to fight and when it's more lucrative to withdraw, no point of sacrifice in an already lost battle. Finally, there is Joakim's crew and his tank. Spirit was highly cautious by now, many steel commanders failed to meet it's expectations. Yet this steel crew and it's daring tank fought with great valor, thus spirit decided to give another shot at these daredevils. The Sabaton crew blazed through their opponents, striking one after another. But terrible luck got the tank stuck - cannon got blocked and turret couldn't move, just as enemies crept on. But why didn't spirit leave them now and then, with their gun stuck and turret exposed? Because luck mustn't decide the battle - steel commanders must. Spirit stayed with the crew and allegedly helped it to regain combat condition quickly enough to take evasive action. And once Sabaton crew got out of harms way and regained control over battlefield, it wrecked remaining tanks, with Joakim being blessed by the spirit as the ultimate steel commander, daring, confident, steady and aware. The one, who controls the battlefield and bends the tide of the fight.

This is where Sabaton truly came to be. They existed far beyond the reaches of time and will exist after we have all passed on They are immortal.

Recently, my mom gifted me a Steel Commanders T-shirt, so I remembered this video immediately. Even after year and a half, still the best song in my opinion. Great job, Sabaton! Looking forward to new songs!

My grandpa was with the Third Armored Division and fought at the Battle of the Bulge as a tank commander. He didn't say much about it, but when I joined the Marines and became a tanker myself he lit right up and asked me if we could shoot and move at the same time. As he deteriorated, he still asked about my tanks and said he worked with General Patton. I'll never know if that was true, he passed soon after, but I do know the simple history of a tanker in the largest battle in US Army history. Been loving Sabaton for over a decade now and it just keeps punching better and better.

Third Armored Division was the forward division in Patton's Third Army, so I don't doubt your grandfather actually met Patton. The Battle of the Bulge was awfully rough for the Third in particular, so I'm not surprised he never really talked.

I'm a Belgian. My father and his family lived in the Ardennes. Many Sherman crews lost their lives around there in the winter of 1944. Five US tanks went down, just downhill from my great aunt's house. The airplanes were mostly grounded due to the weather and if else couldn't get at a German tank hidden in the small valley surrounded by hills with antiaircraft guns. And these men from the Third , they just went on until they got that one Panther in ambush there. My sincere thanks to your late grandfather and his brothers in arms. RIP. My dad told me. We don't forget.

Blooper on the FV4005, normally it has a 4 shell magazine, and it fired once, then started slowly retreating. So where were the other 3 shots it could've fired unless that was it's last shot and was reloading? 🗿🍷

The moment when Sabaton themselves man the tank and wreck havoc is both awesome and hilarious. Definitely my favourite videoclip.

Just wanted to tell you how much this means to me. My grandfather was a tank driver during WW2 earning a purple heart saving his crew from a burning tank. He died recently and when I heard this it reminded me of him. Thank you so much. U guys are awesome

As clunky and body as they k2 tank is, it was the most feared tank by the germans up until near the end of the war. It could withstand fire from most tanks and antitank guns. It's draw back was lack of speed and occassionally needing an external tractor to move in mud

I interpreted it like these tankers were not worthy to hold his power because they did stupid mistakes where they couldn't get out themselves, so the Spirit left them. And of cause, Sabaton, as the WoT progamers, are worthy enough. I mean come on, you can't put this song together with Joakim's first WoT round, where he probably got shot to pieces like every other noob. The only thing fitting his songs then would've been, that he beats his knee in rage xD
