The Christmas Truce was not an ordered truce by the people in command. It was an agreement by the soldiers themselves in the trenches. Just FYI.

In many cases after the truce lots of soldiers refused to fire on the men they'd just celebrated Christmas with. Partly because of this, but mostly for their insubordinate fraternization with the enemy, Command on both sides transferred the troops involved to different fronts and harshly punished them.

That cross they set up represents an actual cross installed at one of the battlefields in Belgium to commemorate the Christmas Truce, the inscription on it is pretty close to what's in the video, especially "Lest We Forget".

Classic Sabaton! This song makes you feel happy, sad, proud and devastated at the same time... Ending credits part was just brilliant, too bad you missed it.

I for one always hoped that Floor would get involved with a Sabaton song in a small way, I got my wish. My other wish is that Apokalyptica, Sabaton and Nightwish tour together. A man can dream but wishes do come true

There's actually a bit more backstory. Firstly, the Pope had actually asked the governments to declare a ceasefure, they told him to get lost. Secondly, from what we know today, there were several smaller "truces" and encounters at different parts of the front line, independently. Sadly, both sides made it very clear that an unauthorized ceasefire would carry consequences the next year.

Full body chills when the piano starts❣️ And again when Floor starts the outro.

Everything Sabaton does is so simple and yet they just keep getting better and better like fine wine it just get better with age

"is that carol of the bells" yes and no, its reversed also, with some more Christmas-y theme songs i highly recommend Majestica and their album "A Christmas Carol" (yes, based on the story) its genuinely a musical masterpiece. Oh and their song Father time. The lead vocalist of Majestica is Tommy Johansson from sabaton, he has a beautiful voice.

Tommy is probably the best voice in power metal at the moment. Only person I can think of coming close is Christian Eriksson, but he can't hit the same highs live that he does on the album (and Tommy could when he filled in for him)

History lesson time! After the many truces that happened that day -against orders from above - many soldiers found it impossible to fire on their new friends. There are stories of soldiers firing into the air to avoid hitting anyone. Command had to spend a lot of time rotating new troops in to continue the fighting. High command on both sides knew that if troops were allowed to fraternize they would realize that they weren't that different. The objective is to present the enemy as the "other", someone completely alien and different from their own soldiers. And they changed out their pawns to drag this war on for another years, costing 15-20 million deaths and, in the end, resulting in a flawed treaty, the consequences of which would lead directly into World War II.

@@_lordshadow1823 Sadder yet is when you think about the fact that those same commanders, knowing that the war was to end at 11 am on 11 November, 1918, insisted on making one last push, killing thousands of soldiers mere minutes before the fighting was to stop. No gains made, no ground recovered, just more murdered soldiers. Maybe we should start making the world leaders and their generals go out on the front lines instead of young men and women.

How about YOU get YOUR great fat ass out of that nice comfy chair in your nice safe office and you go do it your goddamned self!' That should be a call all around the world. Leaders need to be HUMANS and not warmongers. WHY do we allow these old outdated fuckshits to remain in charge? They are making sure to kill us all instead of looking out for everybody, while they remain safe and just get older and wealthier.

My take on how the truce happened in the first place was just the perfect confluence of events. The Pope had called for a Christmas cease fire that year, which may have had an effect on the troops' mindset (we don't know how many heard about the call to lay down their arms, though). This being the first year of the war, the new way of fighting with machineguns and trenches was still unfamiliar to the troops. Up until WWI, war had been an orderly affair of line infantry firing in volleys, cavalry, etc. War was considered to be "gentlemanly", pauses were granted to collect the dead and wounded, wounded men were granted quarter, etc. The pause in the shelling on Christmas Eve, I think, allowed those ideals of gentlemanly warfare to reassert themselves. Last, you just want to stop fighting. Those men had to be so, so tired. Emotionally and mentally, as well.

Fun fact: The drummer, Hannes Van Dahl's wife Floor Jansen is the opera vocals in the end of the video. She is also the singer in the incredible band Nightwish.

Noone actually wanted to kill eachother in there... They were all just puppets controlled by the higher-ups and all they could do is fight against the opposing side for survival even if they didnt really want to. The Christmas Truce really shows this

This is my favorite Christmas song of all time! Christmas came early this year thanks to SABATON!

I'm with you, brother. I don't do Christmas songs until around Thanksgiving, but as soon as this dropped I had to listen. I've been rocking to it since. And every single time I end up an emotional mess.

This is one of the most touching stories ever. It simply goes to show that these men were able to find a brief moment of humanity amidst one of the worst periods of inhumanity in history. This song gets me every time.

Your positivity is so infectious. Your reactions have helped me through a difficult part of my recent life. Please keep doing what you're doing, I can only imagine I'm not the only person who feels this way

Sabaton - The Last Stand

Found myself watching this at 4.00am. Superb music by Sabaton, invoked an emotional response that very few songs can now days. Keep up the good work Alex.

They had more in common than you think. They each were stuck in the frozen mud and snow with dead buddies and longing to be home with family and friends for the Holiday. That they were able to share a brief moment of humanity in the midst of total insanity says a lot about these men. Never happened again as the Generals made sure of it, this was the troops who called the truce and it is harder to kill someone you know after that. This is also a song of remembrance for those who never made it home from any war for the Holidays. 11/11 just passed and this is a song to commemorate the fallen and hope they have found the peace these men never knew and hope we can all regain that humanity they displayed. Love Floor's Aria during the end credits, the Valkyrie Goddess collecting the fallen and bringing them home to rest just a haunting sound that really capped a great song and a great video.

You skipped the ending? You missed Floor. I would imagine this would happen more often if the consequences for not following orders weren’t so severe. Often times the actual people fighting on the front lines have more in common than not. They are just sacrificial pawns to their countries government and are doing what they are told

Guess there is a new song to add to my Christmas Metal Playlist! A song about one of the weirdest moments in all of wartime. Only Sabaton could write a song about this.

Sabaton once again delivers a outstanding piece of music. Not only is the song outstanding but that damn intro is outstanding same with the whole video, fucking amazing.

The band did a charity tshirt for a local war museum in the UK, raised thousands to help keep them open. Lucky I got one before they sold out.

Apparently many of the troops from both sides exchanged pictures and mementos with one another so that if the other person carrying those items lived they would be able to meet at a later date and time as friends. I know of a story where 2 men exchanged photos of each others families and their Great-Grandchildren somehow met at a coffee shop years later (a German grandson, American granddaughter) and hit it off and ended up marrying one another. A real show of love and respect if there ever was one

Yes this was dropped a bit too far before Christmas, but it was dropped for Armistice Day/Remembrance Day/Veteran's Day ... which is Nov 11. So a little early for Christmas yes.. but in context in this case I think it is appropriate for both events.... particularly with the "Lest We Forger" at then end of the video which is a traditional moto for Remembrance Day across the Commonwealth countries (and I imagine elsewhere as well.)

Honestly, the only people who wanted to fight that war were politicians and high ranking officers. In fact, the commanding officers on both sides were so scared that their soldiers would just stop fighting all together, that the day after the truce, both sides ordered artillery barrages to start the fighting again. And any attempt after that for a Christmas truce was immediately squashed.

Pure masterpiese! Love this song!

The main reason for the truce, apart from it being Christmas in all, was that the soldiers on both sides were completely disenfranchised by the war at that point. They had been promised that the war would be fast and glorious and that it would bring their great nation glory, but when it didn't and they saw no benefit to fighting they wanted to have some end to the violence. And so, both sides left the trenches and in to no man's land, not to fight, but to celebrate. The only reason why the war continued the next day was that the generals forced them. It's a similar situation as with the Vietnam War was for many Americans.

In some parts of the front, this Christmas truce actually went on into and slightly beyond new years eve 1914-1915... so, as said... it did hold (in some parts) for quite some time given the circumstances of being at war with eachother.

The saddest part about the Christmas Truce is the aftermath of it. Soldiers from both sides of the conflict refused to shoot at each other after having enjoyed a moment of peace and harmony with one another. Commanders on both sides either had the unsubordinated soldiers either moved to other fronts and harshly punished, or had them punished right then and there, sometimes through execution. It was one of the many times in history where human spirit managed to break through the iron curtain of war for just a moment, before getting crushed once again by it. I think the aftermath is especially the reason why Sabaton wanted to make this song especially emotional and sad. It's pretty much a testament to the death of innocence.

The soldiers of the Christmas truce found out, that they actually had more in common with the poor bastard in the other trench, than with their own generals!

One thing this song drives home...regarding “putting their differences aside” was that their differences weren’t so distinct. This was a political war orchestrated by the powerful and fought, for the most part, by ordinary men who’d signed up out of patriotic duty. The actual infantry on both sides generally had a lot in common, fighting because they were told to, out of duty, not out of malice towards each other.

The beginning of WW1 was complicated. The Austrians probably had every right to kick the crap out of Serbia for assassinating the heir apparent to the throne. (And yes, the Serbians probably did back the Young Bosnians as they were supplied by the Black Hand). But because of timing, politics, and just absolutely bad luck the war ended up involving most of Europe and spanned the entire world. Saying that it was politicians being politicians is oversimplifying it. Several of the politicians involved tried their hardest to prevent war. Extra Credits has a video about the July Crisis called "The Seminal Tragedy". It goes into some depth about the events leading up to the war. It's amazing how many small things could have happened slightly differently and the last 100 years would have been very different.

Majestica is not a spin-off from Sabaton, but Tommy Johansson´s own band. It has been around since 2000 and was previosly called Reinxeed. Tommy has been with Sabaton since 2016.

The Christmas truce was proof that no matter what country you fight for, every grunt eventually gets tired of all the bureaucracy and bs of war and wants some peace time. even if it's for a one night or day

This also happened during civil war in america as what i read back in school i thing around first battle of fredriksburg north and soutth troops shared resources and such on christmas. I think Iced Earth sang about that in Glorious burden album or im misthinking :)

Some groups took part in the truce, mostly they were Germans and Brits, and some did not, and actually continued the war. There are a number of written accounts about the truce, and many letters reached home, but only few of them would even mention the infamous games of footie, and certainly no extended games were played. Some cans certainly got kicked around, that it is very unlikely that there have been full games, although, if there were, there would have been 2 sections where it was most likely, but I can't remember their names. Go check out Warographics' new video about the Christmas Truce if you really want to learn more. It is a fascinating topic!
