Saba - Few Good Things (A Short Film)

Музыка

Saba presents 'Few Good Things' The Short Film, directed by C.T. Robert
Artist's Note from Saba
The concept of Few Good Things is the realization of self after a search for exterior fulfillment. It is the satisfaction and completeness you gain by simply living a life that is yours. Few is a small number, but few is not lonely. In the face of all adversity, a few good things is recognizing and accepting blessings. Few is to count them, one by one. An empty glass is full of air. An empty bank is full of lessons. An empty heart is full of memories. Few good things is to grow comfortable with the empty, and despite that, finding your fullness.
Director's Note from C.T. Robert
As a storyteller, I've always been drawn to stories that attempt to identify what makes us who we are. The ones that ask questions like: What does having everything you need really look like? Is it sitting at a dinner table with your loved ones? Is it waking up next to the woman you love? Is it having cherished memories for all of those you care for, those still in the physical and those who passed on?
It's hard to pinpoint the exact answers to all these but we know that it's nothing that can be achieved from monetary fulfillment or anything materialistic. It's a weight that can only be carried with you through years of experiences and memories made from putting the time in with those around you. No amount of money could ever replace that. In this film we want to refocus the conversation surrounding these ideas and help shed light on what's really important in the grand scheme of it all.

15:26 Sankofa means to “retrieve”; literally “go back and get”; san - to return; ko - to go; fa - to fetch, to seek and take. Sankofa is often associated with the proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi,” or “Sankofa w’onkyir” which translates as: “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.”

No lie I didn't know what to think the first couple singles cause I was such a fan of Care For Me and they sounded nothing like it. Then I heard a piece of the Bone record and thought it sounded great. I'm glad I waited till the album dropped to hear it. I'm not sure if Saba is in a better space than he was in during care for me but it does sound like it on this record, even with the deep subject matter. This is definitely an album we will be talking about for a while now, and I hope it brings even more fans your way cause it's incredible. Sorry for ever doubting it.

Critical response to Saba just confounds me. I keep hearing how his sound “lulls” and his style “hasn’t outgrown his influences yet” and all I hear is sonic genius that takes me so many places. Maybe it’s my personal connection to music being so intense. Maybe I just let myself rejoice in each artist individually. But Saba’s work matters so much to me. I’m a Tulsan, and we’re kinda of an unspoken cousin of Chicago (many Black Tulsans fled to Chicago after the 1921 Race Massacre). I remember visiting Chicago for the first time in like 2004 and thinking, “This is like home. I know these people. I know their facial expressions.” Maybe that’s it. I don’t know. I’m just thankful that I get to hear it, and that he gets to do his work. 🙏🏽

The energy that this album gave me on first listen was different, and then upon a number of listens I felt what it was really propagating - contentment. Saba expressed this in the best way he could, and it's felt in every song. Now when I hear the intro and 2012 I'm moved into a different space and feel. To be and feel genuine in your messages from this album shows it takes time, and Saba does show us this very well with his raps on here. Few Good Things is for Saba, for the people, for the world. Yo. This was so wholesome, beautiful and raw. 🥲 I love the storytelling and the imagery. I cried when you showed the abandoned building. All of those rich memories that took place there. I felt your pain and saw the hurt in your face. You are so brave for opening up your heart and creating a body of work based off of everything you ever loved and knew, and reflecting on the loss that you experienced. That's not an easy thing. Our first reaction is to run and hide from pain but you faced it and made beautiful art from it. You told our story as well as our grandparents because all of our grandparents did come from the South for a better life. You showed the world what life was like as a child growing up in Chicago. To us, it was a beautiful place despite all of the violence. Glad you did this. Got me all in my feels this morning. Rest in peace to everyone that was lost. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
