Saarbahn in May 2023 - from the city of Saarbrücken to the surroundings

English subtitles available - Saarbahn is a light rail system for the city of Saarbrücken (federal state Saarland, Germany). When this video was recorded in 2023, one line was in operation, line 1 or S1. It runs from Lebach (northern terminus) via Saarbrücken to Sarreguemines (in France, southern terminus). Normally, trains do not run along the entire line. Like in Karlsruhe (Germany), trains go far into the surroundings of the city on railway lines. That's why Saarbahn uses Bombardier Flexity Link tram units. They can run with DC current as well as with AC 15.000 Volt 16 2/3 Hz. Many vehicles carry full surface advertising.
There are 2 tracks for each direction at Saarbrücken central station, at the place in front of the station. Normally the inner tracks are used. The platforms at the inner tracks are higher, adapted for the tram vehicles, as these also stop at platforms at the railway lines. The lower platforms at the outer tracks are mainly used by buses.
The rail profile differs from that of other tram systems (like in Leipzig, for example). The wheel flanges of Saarbrücken trams are designed in geometry for the use on railway lines. So the grooves of the tracks in Saarbrücken are wider than in Leipzig.
Further east in Saarbrücken, at the former Roman castle and army camp, the trams change over into the railway to Sarreguemines (France).
At Brebach trains stop at the normal railway platform of Deutsche Bahn (German railways). The trams have additional boards that move out to cover the gap between vehicle and platform. These boards can be used at all railway stations. The Saarbahn workshop is located at the side of Brebach station.
West of central station, at Ludwigstraße tram stop, another juntion provides a connection to the tracks of German railways. At present this connection is not used in regular scheduled service.

Hello Dirk. Thank you for another entertaining and informative film on the local trams. I especially liked the historic buildings in the centre-town area and the views of both freight and trams where the Saarbahn trams took their sharp corner and the steep hill along side the freight line. Sehr schön gemacht. War letztes Jahr für einen Tag in Saarbrücken und wollte mit der Saarbahn nach Frankreich fahren und Videos machen. Natürlich war gerade zu dieser Zeit SEV 😅.

In den Norden habe ich es aus Zeitgründen auch nicht geschafft. Hatte nur ein paar Stunden Aufenthalt auf dem Weg nach Luxemburg. Vielleicht gibt es ein andermal, man wird sehen. Welche Städte stehen als nächstes auf deinem Programm?

Freiburg steht bei mir auch ganz oben auf der Liste, will ich diesen Sommer machen. Vielleicht sehen wir uns ja am Straßenrand beim Filmen. Ist mir in Leipzig passiert, da war ein anderer Spotter am Start und wir kamen ins Gespräch. Der machte aber nur was bei Tiktok, schade eigentlich...
Interesting combination of rail and tram. I think Stuttgart has a model of transport like this, too.

Hi Dirk. As always you have put a lot of work into creating this video. The video is fantastic. I like this system very much. I have only seen this type of system in Chemnitz. Unfortunately there is no such system in Poland. There is not even a law allowing trams to run on railway tracks. For this reason, there is no possibility of such a system in the near future. Several cities in Poland are considering such a system. The most interesting idea seems to me to be the construction of a tram line from Bydgoszcz to Toruń with partial use of the railway line.

Thank you very much, Sylweriusz! I think it was difficult in Germany as well when the first system of this type was launched in Karlsruhe. Legislation can be complicated. The idea of a tram line from Bydgoszcz to Toruń is very interesting. As I saw in OpenStreetMap there are not many inhabitated places between both cities, but such a line would offer a direct connection without having to change between train and tram.

Moin Dirk das ist eine saarländischen Regiotram und die erste und einzige Im Saarland sowas in Hamburg wäre es so schön und günstig als U Bahn Tunnel einfach schön toll sowas einzuführen z.b Hamburg wäre sowas gut

Das stimmt, Thomas! So eine Regiotram wäre meiner Meinung nach eine gute Lösung, um die Bahnstrecke zwischen Hamburg und Geesthacht zu reaktivieren. Man könnte die Züge dann nämlich noch durch das Zentrum von Bergedorf fahren lassen und anschließend wieder auf DB-Gleisen nach Hamburg Innenstadt führen.

Keine Ahnung, aber vielleicht macht die Verkehrswende es eines Tages wieder interessant.
Seit einen halben Jahrhundert warten die Leute auf einen S-Bahn Anschluss nach Osdorfer born und die VET ist keine gute Idee lieber einen fernbahntunnel! Und lieber mit der S2 bis elbgaustraße oder bis Kaltenkirchen und die S5 bis Altona weil sonst die zu einer langen Strecke die über zwei Stunden machen!

Das stimmt, die S5 wird dann wirklich eine lange Linie. Vielleicht ist sie dann anfällig für Verspätungen. Man kann ja bei einer S-Bahn auch schlecht Pufferzeit einbauen, wo eventuelle Verspätungen wieder abgefangen werden könnten. (Beispiel: die IC2 von Leipzig nach Emden haben in Hannover über 15 Minuten, in denen sie am Bahnsteig stehen und Anschlüsse abwarten. Bei Verspätungen fällt die Pause dann eben kürzer aus.)
