Great to see that the Viggen is still flying after all those years. Spent parts of my youth in Sweden during the 70s, so this brings back some good memories (not to forget the Draken)!

The Swedes definitely know how to make great Jetfighters.

If there was ever a aircraft that looked as if it meant business----this is it!

I love everything about this amazing aircraft.

Best jets most never heard of, these never get enough attention.

I have never seen a Viggen in action until now and had no idea it has a built in thrust reversal capability. Astounding!

Still awesome. I loved this aircraft as a child and built the Airfix kit of it. Still a favourite and so good to see one still being beautifully flown. Sweden; please bring it to RIAT!! Thanks for the post.

Absolute stunning aircraft.

I remember making the Airfix kit model of this back in the 1970s. We have the Royal Swedish Airforce displaying the Saab Drakken at the Bournemouth Air Festival next weekend

Beautiful cold war era aircraft. Self starting. Able to go in reverse and operate off of roads. One of my faves.

One of my favourite aircraft. So interesting.

The "E" designation was 'Electronic Warfare', Wikipedia tells "A few aircraft were kept in an operational condition for electronic warfare training against the Gripen" until around year 2007. The manufacturer SAAB is funding the Historic Flight activity (SwAFHF) where veteran military servicemen volunteer to keep a fleet of historical military aircraft airworthy.

This is a very downscaled version , in terms of abilities ( not size). The last versions had so sophisticated avionics that they cannot be maintained and for shows and display they kept the more simple versions.

I have as a 13-year old rested in the air-intakes, in the factory. Very smooth and comfortable :) One day they performed landing-gear tests. Most or all of the airplane was restricted for the risk of one being crushed or being like a pizza up in the landing gear well.

The white spray is contrails (condensation trails), due to humidity and low pressure.

No, it's absolutely not contrails... It's kerosene. From an aircraft mechanic point of view, I'll say that it's fuel which goes from the tanks to the fuel pressurisation system and then go outside with pressurized air through a vent. But absolutely not contrails.

Viggen was designed for very short take off and landing capabilities for road bases or parts of an airbase runway. The requirement was 500 m for start and landing. To do this, you need to fly at low speeds and that's why Viggen has a canard, a strong undercarriage to handle the impact (the boogie main gear) and an reverse feature to stop before the 500 m mark, even in icy conditions. The boogie main gear also helps to straighten up the airplane along the runway when landing in crosswinds. I hope this answer your question about the "four back wheels"

As @subban15 wrote. The undercarriage was basically built for heavy duty carrier style landings (aka "controlled crashes") in order to land hard and short.

THE ONLY Issue in Viggen's performance (not counting 'Stealth' or internal weapons) I see that could or should, have stopped it's use or up-grades, is Roll-Rate. It had THE GUN, weapons, reverse=thrust, STOL, and radar to be front-line even now! It's Climb rate Alone (intercepted a SR-71!! WTH!!) of 54000 Ft/Min. is in itself notable! I get 'why' Sweden didn't import (ok, so Finland, Singapore, Switzerland, or Taiwan could use these?! or not.) them, but dang, keep a few around! Too good to toss aside!

The Viggens engine (RM8) was actually made by Volvo

SAAB ended up with a license-built version of the Pratt & Whitney JT8D-the same engine flown on the 727 and DC-9 airliners-known locally as the Volvo RM8.
