    Thanks for running through this, allows for tackling the job with a bit more confidence. One important thing that you don't mention is tightening the rear bush bolt after applying load on the arm. mine was loose as a goose from the supplier. Here are torque settings (from the SAAB workshop system) for all mounting points: Arm (pin) to swivel member - 50NM Rear bush mount (the 2x18mm) - 65NM then additional 90 degrees rotation Then after load applied: Arm to Front bush - 65NM then additional 90 degrees rotation Arm to Rear bush - 40NM then additional 30 degrees rotation Please note that there are some much higher torque ratings given on several Vectra C tutorials and documentation. Not sure why as most of it is the same platform right?!

    Oh, blimey yes. There are no end of knock producers. Drop links are common, but also: wishbone ball joint; rear wishbone bush; top mounts; top mount bearing; track rod end; inner track rod ball joint; shocks; springs (broken); brake pads (loose in caliper); subframe bushes. Currently my RH inner track rod ball is knocking so I'll be replacing it soon (video to follow). For your knock I'm thinking rear wishbone bush, but don't hold me to that. Yes! The right one got the rubber torn and I believe it was installed improperly before I bought it in 2016. I believe that's the case because it has been making a clunking noise all that time and I've just been too lazy to do anything about it until now thanks to your video.

  • @FZ500
    @FZ500Ай бұрын

    When using the jack to install the ball joint stud into the socket (and when preloading the bushing), shouldn't you lift from the suspension arm rather than from the ball joint? Lifting directly underneath the ball joint risks damaging the ball joint cap, right? Especially if the jack does not have rubber padding in the contact area, thus resulting in metal-on-metal contact between the ball joint cap and the jack.

    Hi, really useful video with additional explanation.....I would like to change the wishbone, not about knocking noise, my car is pulling right. Do you think the wishbone can cause this phenomenon? I think there was a minor accident with the car , because of the right headlight is brighter than the left one!

  • @CycloneCyd

    @CycloneCyd

    4 жыл бұрын

    Mine pulls ever so slightly to the left, yet the car is perfectly aligned. It is caused by the camber of the road. Pulling to one side can also be caused by the rear wheel toe being out of alignment. It is CRUCIAL to have these aligned on a HUNTER four wheel alignment rig.

    There's a repair kit from SAAB Ref 12799814, its a bellows kit to change the rubber bushing and circlips of the strut rotule, so you don't need to change all the control arm for a new one, you refurbish the old one, as long as the others 2 horizontal bushings are good (but, even the back horizontal one can be changed, there's a separate ref. for it). Do you know about that kit, did you ever used it ? thanks.

  • @CycloneCyd

    @CycloneCyd

    2 жыл бұрын

    I wasn't aware of that kit, but in general the gaiter on ball joints can be changed and there are plenty of universal ones available. You really need to know the ball joint is in excellent order if you're only changing the gaiter.

  • @LDantinhas

    @LDantinhas

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@CycloneCyd yes you can’t keep the rotule knocking on the arm through the damaged gaiter rubber for too long, cause it’ll become non spherical and loose the ability to perform well just changing the gaiter kit. But if you do it as soon as you feel the knockings, it’s a cheaper way to sort it out I think, both sides repair kits cost less than one complete arm 👍

    Sir, I just bought a 2006 Saab 9-3 “saloon“ as you UK folks like to call them :-) At lower speeds little bumps produce a clunk, but not at higher speeds. I don’t really feel the clunk as one would expect with a worn suspension component, I simply hear it. The vehicle only has 112,000 miles on it. My problem is that I don’t really know what “normal” is. I’ve never driven a brand new Saab 9-3. How many miles did your car have on it before you started experiencing the noise in the video?

    Knocking noises can be so much! If it is over bumps, it is usually the ball joint in this video or springs. If it is on uneven roads or potholes, and it sounds like your car is falling apart, it is probably the sway bar bushings or end links. Mine was making horrible noises, and I replaced my front end links, and rear bushings (those were a real bitch). End links removed some noise, but the worst was coming frlm the loose bushings on the rear. Now it is completely silent even though my ball joints are worn out on all four wheels.
