My Saab 9-3 does all of the filming work for the channel, with thousands of miles being driven every year it's always good to take a moment to see how the car's running, They're not exactly new cars and over time, parts wear out...
In this case, the car has done over 126,000 miles and is 17 years old! That's borderline classic car surely. The question, therefore, is how much power has been lost over the cars lifetime? Surely it's not running as good as new. Or is it... maybe even better? Let's find out...

Oi! Elly did just as well as your Saab actually. Both plus 1! We don't talk about Bella the Berlingo...

Elly currently has a standard 652cc, if memory serves, but crucially, it's not owned by Ian
To have a saab still making same HP it did when it left the factory after 126,000 miles is outstanding John, that car needs to be put on a plinth and celebrated Great video john

Great to know that it's still at factory standard after 126k miles!
Amazed it makes the rated power 17 years after it was made. Great car!

Its par for the course really, if it hasnt been abused.
Perfect. This makes me very optimistic about my own 2006 Saab 9-3 1.9TiD-150 having similar power.. it certainly still feels fast

I miss my 9-3, best car I have driven since my 96 in 1982 !
Did you know a good horse has up to something like 15 hp, so really 148hp is actually 2,220hp, so it turns out that you do indeed have a rocket ship. This may explain somewhat how you get round so many motorways like you do. Zooooom. Sweeeeet, Aweeeesome.

If a horse had gears, you could make it do 100 mph. Once.
That's lovely. When I got my car it wasn't cared for much so only being 9y.o. and about 67k miles from stock 155hp it had 136hp left. But got all the horses back in the stables after carbon clean.
Love it.... That's impressive for that many miles on the clock. She's gotta lotta life left
Top of the leader board with +1. The Hillman Imp in 3rd place with 117bhp is pretty impressive for a sub 40bhp basic. I wonder how much of the original Imp is left in that car.

Nice one Jon, still plenty of life in the SAAB got another 20 years in her,well done mate👍
Kudos for Banzai references, I used to love early digital TV when BBC Choice did an interactive version. "you are even wronger!"
Is this the refresh James May was referring to when he talked about Top Gear? :) Nice leaderboard..... will take some beating.
Well done! Love the IMP.... Could be a Sunbeam, but if not a Hillman. My older sister's boyfriend many, many, many years ago had one and I loved it!
I have this a same 1.9 in a 159 Alfa that still runs like a clock at 200,000mi with zero major repairs. Great engine.
Lbs/ft - not seen this for some time. Used to measuring everything in 🐎🐎
Yay! so happy for you and your vauxhall vectra
Goes to show it is well worth maintaining your car properly. Great video as usual.
My last car was a 9-3 1.9 TiD Vector Sport. It was a great car, but traded it in for £1k against a fancy pants Merc that is very nice.... but not a Saab... It was a great caravan tow-car too.
Have to watch this as s serial Saab owner and also have a 93 CDTi but a sportwagon .
I know someone with a wagon one of these, also a diesel. He chanced upon it for a good price and intended to trade it for something else, but I think he ended up loving it so maybe he'll keep it. One owner before him. Was a little beat up here and there but he's done some work on it and it's looking pretty great!
Well this bodes well! My Saab is slightly ahead of you on 138,000 but still pulls well and gives me confidence that my engine is doing alright especially now I’ve cleaned the EGR! Could do with some new injector seals though, it’s a little rough for a few seconds on a cold start but there’s life in the old girl yet! Glad to see your Saab is still going strong, hope it gives you many more years of reliable service!

I have a 9 3 vector sport 1.9tid 150 estate , 210 000 miles goes like a scalded cat, you can get the factory power upgrade if you need a bit extra
The better cooling on the road over the small fan will give you some extra.
126000 miles of use will reduce the friction on moving parts. If a car has been regularly maintained it can improve its power output as surfaces mate together and become smoother.
Betting Ends That’s very respectable output Obviously all the motorway drives have helped loosen it up a bit
Awesome result. Proves its healthy enough for a cheeky remap.....
Nice one Jon what a satisfying result! I had my 140,000 mile focus ST170 on the dyno last month and it made 180hp, 10 more than standard! (albeit with a few modifications) maybe now you might investigate a remap? perchance
Growing up my dad had a 95 auro 155mph not sure on bhp but road trips the south of France in it memories ill never forget
To be fair Elly is a 2CV and that's bloody good for a 2CV.
Nice "Banzai!" insert, there.
This is just testament to how well Saab designed, engineered and built cars. They are brilliant cars and ooze more style, class and cache than any Audi, BMW or Merc ever could. For me, Saab made the best mainstream cars.

As a car nerd, yes I wanted 150bhp, but with my engineering hat on, that is perfect! Much more, and I'd start to suspect that the cylinder bores were worn (hence less friction), which can obviously happen on high mileage cars.
Now you've just got to get the Hirsch tuning package.

nice video, at 126,037 miles from my reading of the odometer when it was shown it is amamzing that it still produces 148 HP
Being one of the earliest person to a upload has being a honour
In next weeks video, an update from Jon as he confesses that the con-rod shot out of the side of the engine on the way home having thrashed the arse off his SAAB in this test!😂
Would love to get my ST220 on the dyno at some point...
I'm just glad that The Ego didn't blow the turbo. Great result.
These diesels are the best. Saab always said it wouldn't put diesels in it cars but when they did, they did it right.

always knew you where number one
YES. Been waiting for this one. I’d love to put my C1 on there but I’m under the impression that it miles away from sunny Oldham. Also, my C1 would probably pull it out of the ground.
Great video. Can't you increase the value of the fiddle factor to convert from measured to corrected engine power to get to 150BHP?
I'll have to get my Smart car down there, it did 127.1hp at the wheels last year. Had a new intake and map since then, chopped 7 seconds off the 80-110 time,so must be making a fair bit more power since the last dyno run.

Great consumer advice there, Jon 😂😂😂
Would have hit 150 with Night Panel enabled, all those dash lights are draining your hrsprs!
awww i thought that the nugget Saxo would be like Tony is for Carbage time, unbeatable king of the leader board .) Still glad to see the Sweed getting on so well, i do miss proper Saabs, they were crazy cars by crazy people with impressive aspirations... but also made loss on every single one of them apparently .(
It's stock 150ps. So it's bang on.
Would love to get my 2007 9-3 Aero on a dyno, stock is 210hp but i've had the stage 1 remap so should be around the 250hp mark, be interesting to see how many horses have bolted over the years,
Wow I wasn't expecting much but 149bhp 👊
I've got two of these - 9-3 Sportwagon 2010 184k and 2006 Convertible at 120k miles. They both produce proper power but the Sportwagon delivers it better, nicely run in and strong as an ox yet sips nectar like a butterfly. Annoys the shit out of "faster" cars anyway. I've got the same engine in my 2011 Alfa Giulietta and that is fit as a butchers dog at 155k miles - needs a clutch though, starts slipping north of naughty. Had them for years and none cost more than 32k and cost buttons to run (try £155 a year for insurance and 65 mpg on the Alfa).
Can I come down with my 2L high pressure turbo Saab and claim 1st 😂😂
3775rpm sounded like a slow speed for developing max power, but when I saw the tacho, I remembered it is a diesel.😀 Nice surprise to have not lost any power though.
@David_Crayford

Petrol does about 5,500 rpm IIRC.
@GoldenCroc
8 ай бұрын
@@David_Crayford Petrol what? 9-3? Are all engine versions the same? I guess its possible they are... I am not an expert on 9-3s specifically, but I would think it might be one of those cars with some engines thats got a software induced flat power power curve. ie. max power is pegged for a 1000rpm interval or so?
@David_Crayford

@@GoldenCroc talking about peak horsepower before the curve drops
@GoldenCroc
8 ай бұрын
@@David_Crayford Well yes, I understood that. But I wondered about other factors, those were the questions in my post. Perhaps you can take a look at it again, and hopefully it should be more clear? I was asking for what engines and car those 5500rpm (as far as your recalled) were valid. And if you are talking about the 9-3 model, if you know if some its availible engines had, as some other cars do, a flat power curve between some rpm intervals?
@David_Crayford

@@GoldenCroc The torque curves, transmission ratios and engine dimentions are all available online on forums if you look for them. I have already seen the graphs and tables.
Go for a remap. I can recommend AMD tuning.
My bet is it'll be a little more than Elly the 2CV, just a little, maybe... :P
I suggest the music to the end trailer of Thunder Birds for your next end music.
Great result can see it being there for some time well at least till you get the skyline down there or till ian brings down betty or matt brings down the crown Victoria only problem i can see with them 2 cars are both automatic
In next weeks episode, Jon and two friends race classic cars around the M25, while giving an alternative view to government road transport policy. Wearing jeans and hawaii shirts.
Just imagine! Same test with a Halford's Go Faster Stripe, Fluffy Dice and a Pongy Pine Air Freshener. 200 BHP Easy😊
Can you do a feature on the Hillman Imp?
Depending how you measure the transmission losses, the calibration of the dyno you can easily alter the “engine” power…however there’s no reason why a diesel engine after 100k in good order without a DPF etc shouldn’t still make good power. Also depending on how the dyno works out the losses (coasted down after each run or a fix figure) you get more power on subsequent runs due to bearings heating up etc and the drag reducing
I guess Saab were too good at it - their products far outlasted the company's earnings . . . : )
Rich needs to set up a little challenge of the KZread shitboxes of who has the least or most power and torque.
Sadly my Saab 9-3 estate of the same year had to be sold earlier this year. The bodywork was deteriorating a little too much. My Subaru Levorg, however, has a similar driving feel about it. As this has all wheel drive, and probably also being a lot younger car, it feels even safer than the Saab in poor weather and holds the road extremely well.

Good old Italian engine 👏🏻
ON THE DYNO - I thought this was going to be about making labels ☹
GM powaaa 💥 💨💨
it's barely broken in, is what it is
I have an theory that it's engine management system is capped for environmental / fuel / maintenance costs, and longevity; that it could originally do more, but it is deliberately de-rated by design to guarantee the numbers. You could probably hack the torque curve, but it would cost more to run, and wear it's parts out faster. And then you need a new car. *EDIT* Also it's a diesel, so it won't rev much higher to give HP. But it does have the torque advantage over petrol.
Gotta get FailRace's Plymouth Fury on that list once he has it running again.
I really thought that you did some editing trick and the camera guy was you
I'd top that figure in my Civic =D
Assuming a 15% loss in power, due to the transmission, the engine will supply much more than 150 HP
Impressive numbers from a car that's 17 years old. Where's your turbo boost gauge ?
Who doesn't love a bit of data 🚙 😉👍
Its almost, like Saab engines, were designed to have far more power out of them. But are deliberately limited. Considering a quick remap can irk out 20 more HP with stuff all engine work.
Ah yeah, the Saab 1.9... which is in turn the lump given to saab from general motors who in turn thought that buying a diesel from the Italians was a good thing. They drive nicely with decent power for their time but they have a massive reliability problem and a tendency to eat cam belts... what gm did to saab was criminal
