SA Unrest | Families of victims demand justice

New reports say more than 35 bodies are unclaimed in Phoenix, northwest of Durban, in the wake of last week's unrest and looting in KwaZulu-Natal when supporters of former President Jacob Zuma staged a series of marches and motorcades protesting against the alleged killing of black residents and calling for his release.

Why does media want to make it a "US vs THEM" thing..(ratings???)..we all South Africans and we all must build this beautiful country up and not destroy it. The bottom line is - lawless people broke the law - law abiding people protected their property and life, where there was a lack of law enforcement/police to protect them. The Constitution say you have to right to protect your property and our life. Law enforcement must now do their work and find the guilty parties who killed from both communities. Its not medias work to interrogate hard working community members as if they are thieves or murderers. Thumbs up to Phoenix community to have done the interview......thumbs down to the interviewee.

A question that should be asked is, when the criminals that entered the community was met with resistance that clearly intended to protect their community, why did the criminals continue to march in with more people instead of leaving the community and stopping the violence ? Why did they have to continue to attack the community? They could have stopped all of these tragic events from occurring once they saw the resistance of the community. This is a question that should be asked. A community can not be blamed for defending themselves while the instigators and criminals are portrayed as victims. It was never a racial incident, it was people being attacked and having to protect themselves and their community.

The law in SA will usually rule in favour of self defence, even in the case of an illegal firearm. Being on your own private property while doing so overwhelmingly puts things in your favour. Having a legal fiream, and defending yourself against a trespasser on your own property you are almost guaranteed to be safe in court. This isnt the US where a fancy lawyer can help a robber win a case for him, our system is much more harsh on those committing crimes with intent to steal or cause harm.

@@nboy7 I’m sure I read in the firearm training manual, that lethal force can be used to protect yourself or any other person (ie: intervening from a 3rd party from being attacked). If someone is armed (with a knife, panga, stick/pipe, gun) - and is approaching, it’s considered a legally justified self defense shooting. Even more so, if it’s a group attacking. The basic proof is “did I feel my life was under threat” - a riotous armed mob meets with that proof. You may use lethal force if... - The attack was already in the process, or it was imminent. - The attack was unlawful. - You were protecting your life, your physical well-being, property, personal freedom, your dignity or sexual integrity, provided that your life was under threat. - The act of self-defence was necessary to prevent the attack from escalating.

First point is that there is only ONE RACE, THE HUMAN RACE! The legacy and damage of apartheid continues. Indians have historically operated under a cover of European privilege starting with the housing, freedom of movement, education and business ownership since the Apartheid government structured this racist system. Attorney Gandhi went SA to protect Indian business owners interests and he too called Africans the K word epithet. So it very clear that that there is no Rainbow Nation in SA. The divisions run very deep and hatred, fear and resentment are just beneath the surface, very close to the surface. This is very bad and it is just the beginning and points to future unrest.

You don't have a right to shoot people that are on the street. Phoenix has a police station, why didn't you call the to be the one making road blocks instead of taking the law into your own hands? Don't you think when you take the law into your own hands you are undermining the law of the Country? Do you think counties such as India will allow people that do not abide to the law of their country?

In general every race, country, in the world is racist, lets not be hypocrites. This also does not make every individual a racist though, this was plain criminality on both sides. If innocent people where killed then the communities need to hand them over, police need to make haste with investigation and arrests. All can't be punished for the actions of some just as with the looting and utter destruction... all can't be blamed for the criminality of some. Let there be reason or there will never be solutions if nobody takes responsibility. At the same time stop using Phoenix as a scapegoat to turn the focus on what happend to the country by looters. To Indians that defended their homes well done, looters had no business causing mayhem in residential areas as well. To all those Indians that killed innocent people not involved in the mayhem, where you attacked innocent people, that is criminal and should be treated as as such by the LAW

Bodies lying unclaimed? Doesn't sound like their families care a whole lot if their bodies are still unclaimed. How does the journalist know what the families want if no one has claimed the bodies?

People were looting innocent people's business, stop asking as if others were not supposed to protect their lives and businesses.if the government is failing people dont blame the vigilantes.
