I was the radio operator on this type aircraft. That small round window is where I sat. Right behind the co-pilot. 1955-56.

Before the internet, all you had for reference was magazines & books. There was a modeling magazine called Replica in Scale that did an article on the HU-16B loaded with drawings of cockpit, radio compartment, etc. along with a dozen or so B&W drawings showing different markings carried by these aircraft. They also did a build/ review of the Monogram kit. Still available on Ebay...look for the 1973 issue. Always thought it was an outstanding magazine and still have all their issues.

I built one, back in the '80s, after flying Nassau to Miami on a Chalk's Airlines plane. I painted it white with blue trim, but was unable to get the Chalk's lettering on the tail. Good 1/72 scale kit.

Trumpeter makes a beautiful 1/48 scale of this USAF version it’s expensive but very detailed, NMUSAF in Dayton Ohio has one on display with the engine open and a mechanic on a work stand that folds out of the cowling

So, I been thinking of buying 1 of these, but got to wondering after watching this, what'd be the story on flying it solo, without the aid of co-pilot and engineer, as sometimes they may be unavailable when ya gotta go? Are there different procedures or what?
