S4 E2 How To Make A Double Spey Cast

Спорт

In this episode of RIO's "How To" series, RIO brand manager Simon Gawesworth explains how to make a Double Spey cast. Simon breaks down the three casting strokes and explains what the caster is trying to achieve with each stroke. In addition, Simon shows some of the commonest mistakes casters make when they practice the Double Spey, as well as how to identify the mistakes.
Simon also shows what a perfect Double Spey cast should look like, and how effortless and efficient casting really can be.
Clearly explained in Simon's easy-going, simple-to-understand style, this is a great film for anyone wanting to learn, or improve their Double Spey cast.
For those wanting to know, Simon used a 7130-4 Sage X fly rod, matched with a 460gr RIO Scandi shooting head in this film.
RIO's "How To" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

    Just like lots of others, this was the first double spey cast video where I truly understood the entire process, exactly why it sometimes goes wrong, etc. The whole square/box concept was extremely helpful.

    Another FABU video. I've watched these all before but find myself coming back and taking notes to improve the little things that make the difference between success and a limp cast that doesn't fly well. Thank you again, Simon and well done !

    Watched way too many “Spey how-to videos” but this one is best! Shows the perfect cast, the most important tips for success, and the most common mistakes, from various angles! Simon is one of the best, and funny too! Now if only the rivers weren’t nearly frozen to go and give them a go!

    Most of becoming good at all expressions of Spey is KNOWING HOW YOU LEARN. When I was learning, I tried to learn from KZread. Was a hot mess for 2 years. Sooooo frustrated. Finally hired a guide. The hands on instruction with him standing right beside me helped but only somewhat. Then asked him to please fish below me so I could see and then mimic what I saw. The immediate demonstration made it all come together in a heartbeat and all the casts suddenly made perfect sense. If you’re on here frustrated, don’t give up, try finding a proficient caster and invite him/her to fish below you. Now sharing Spey with others.

    An avid fan of yours Mr Gawesworth I have your casting book as well but don't have it with me at the moment..A few questions please if I may , its the leader that stays in the box correct ? even though the shooting head Skagit or Skandi plus leader maybe partly out along with running line and when the cast is complete whether single or double and you have completed swinging the soft hackle wets or lures you have to retrieve the line and my question is how much do you retrieve before you start the spey cast whether doubt or single

  • @RIOPRODUCTS

    @RIOPRODUCTS

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Stuart, we asked Simon your questions. He said 1) "yes, well sort of the leader. The junction of the leader and line tip should be in the very center of the box, so if you have a very long leader, some of it will be outside the box". 2) "The most balanced set up when casting any shooting head is when there is about a 1 foot overhang of shooting line outside the rod. So it depends how far you cast as to how much you retrieve. When possible, strip all the shooting line in except that last one foot."

    I had just viewed the Rio single spey video and in it is describes a 45degree angle "dip" on the back swing, rising up finishing high to develope a D loop. This may be confusing to beginners when in a double spey or in finishing a Snap T, you do not want that "dip". Am I seeing this correctly?

  • @RIOPRODUCTS

    @RIOPRODUCTS

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Joe, we asked Simon what to explain. He said that the Single Spey is the only one of the five main Spey casts that has any kind of dip during the D-loop stroke. All the others should have a slightly, continuously rising rod tip path during the D-loop stroke. Hopefully that makes some kind of sense?

    Simon, you mentioned you had a scandi line but then you say it's a Skagit. Are you using the Skagit with floating tip and calling it scandi?

  • @RIOPRODUCTS

    @RIOPRODUCTS

    Hi Rodolfo, we asked Simon to clarify this. He said he used a Scandi head in the video for the casting demonstration, but showed a Skagit line box only to emphasize that this cast works well with both Skagit and Scandi heads.
