S4 E1//From Gutted Hull to Ultimate Voyaging Boat. What it Takes to Make it a Reality//

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In the first episode of Season 4, I share what it took to rebuild our 36' sailboat from a complete gutted hull and deck into my ideal voyaging boat. Every phase of the rebuild is covered from fiberglass work to woodwork, from painting to rigging, from pumbing to electrical.
Previous episodes recap:
Season 1, Episode 1, contains a short synopsis of a six year total rebuild of the Far Reach from a gutted bare hull. I also double hand the Far Reach offshore with my sister from NC to the BVI.
In Season 2, I single-hand the Far Reach from Sint Maarten back to NC.
In Season 3, I share my Single-handed voyage from NC to the BVI as well as from the VI back to NC.

    I've been researching small boats to tackle a multi-year project on so we can go sailing in a few years. I was going over things I'd like to do to make it more seaworthy and eliminating the toe rail and strengthening the hull/deck joint was one of the first things I thought of. And here I am finding your videos and you did just that!

    Well,,,, I've watched a few of your sailing videos, more or less come across them by chance. But I fear I haven't watched them hard enough, because I didn't notice how pure of a sailor you are and I failed to notice how perfectly appointed your boat really was. I totally agree with your philosophy, I try to find ways to simplify my boat as well, it's a much more modern boat design, but that doesn't mean that I need to complicate it with unnecessary fancy gadgets. Thank you so much for sharing this video with us. Best regards from Jarle

    Worth watching a third time! Just great and it shows what, I believe, is the right way to think and approach life. The view @ 1:19 is simply stunning in a sort of Indiana Jones vibe. Yeah, I know, a different setting and different subject matter, but for some reason it feels similar: classic style done right in an unpretentious way. In these crazy times we live, this picture could and should be on a cover of a magazine. Every single item in that shot is exactly what it purports to be - real wood, real metals (those windows are stunning), paper books and charts, the fabrics are just spot on in texture and color - everything has a certain consistent style, one against the other, and strikes a consistent look and feel. Love it!

    Binge watching these videos and I must say this rebuild is a job well done indeed. If there is only one thing that I would do differently in "my dream" Cape Dory rebuild, it would be the engine. A nice new Beta Marine fully mechanical (no electronics) diesel with as large a tank as possible. Oh, and while I run the fantasy in my head, lots of lithium batteries for all the electronics I would have and a water maker ... wait, I think I just ruined the whole point of this sailboat build. You must be so disciplined to escape all the mumbo jumbo electronic aids and keep it simple. I admire that. Since in my dream I want to travel the world, mostly alone preferably, I would have to get that engine and some base amount of electronics.

  • @FarReachVoyages

    @FarReachVoyages

    Жыл бұрын

    Most electronics do not help you. They get in the way. They frustrate you when they don't work. They take up space. They degrade your enjoyment of sailing because they get between you and the boat and between you and the environment. Once you understand that it's easy to avoid them. Stay tuned. There are going to be some changes to the boat in the upcoming episodes. You're going to be happy....

    Wonderful job John, I have been following your project for years but this video was a great addition to your story. My personal regret is I don't have 6,000 hours of work left in me with then the ability to actually sail the completed project. I spent 3 years refitting my 27'er and I sailed it solo to the South Pacific from Mexico last year. My next leg is from Tahiti to Hawaii in about a month. I have a long list of changes I want to make to the boat once I return to North America in about a year. You did a much better job of anticipating the potential problem areas of the boat before you set out than I did! Thanks! Ben S/V DAWN

    Having corresponded with you a few times John, via email, it is really only seeing this video, then going back taking the time to read through some of your project entries on your website, that the stark reality of what you have accomplished comes to light ....the amount of thought and just damn bloody hard work you put into Far Reach, is simply outstanding, and in my opinion, the marquee for all fellas that want to redo an old plastic classic that only start with basic skills. Inspirational mate, inspirational. There are a lot of rebuild video logs out there, but your half hour here (with more to come?) is one of, if not, the best I have viewed. As I embark on restoring my next boat (sold the Contessa, now have an english designed 'Twister' 28 footer) you have given me the inspiration I need to try do most of the work myself this time, instead of paying through the nose for boat labour professionals and being poor as a result! Plus, you simply don't get the inner satisfaction if you contract all the work out - yes I am a busy guy with a 9-5 job, but where there is a will there's a way. Thanks again for sharing your sailing life in both word and now video medium. Cheers.

    I am glad you liked the articles. I have never, nor would I ever, encourage anyone to sail without an engine. It's a personal choice and has to be made carefully and with a lot of reflective thinking. An engine does not make a boat complicated per se, though it's far more complicated than a boat without one. My general perspective is the simpler we keep our lives, and by extension our boats, the happier we will be. As L. Francis Herreshoff observed, "Simplicity afloat is the surest guarantee of happiness." And yes, I still have disdain for the engine. But I am learning to live with it.....
