To be fair, like, what made 2020 so bad? Someone who didn't know wtf he was doing botched a massive pandemic. He ... was elected in 2016. There was lots of minority targeted violence ... inspired by a fascist elected in 2016. There was lots of unrest, inspired by the policies of people like the guy elected in 2016, though certainly not starting with him, but definitely made worse by the feeling that the people in power don't give a shit. There's also the fact that this was what decided the court, which we've been feeling ever since. It's kinda like how falling off a building is the catalyst for all the bad shit that follows.

I still remember waking up the day after the election and asking my parents jokingly if Donald Trump had won - my father looked at me with a dark tragedy in his eyes and said, very gently, "There's still a chance the electoral college could not elect him." But I also remember telling my AP physics teacher how scared I was as a queer person and him telling me that if anyone said or tried to do anything to me, to come to him. That, to me, was a reminder that even our worst impulses can be undermined by simple human empathy and kindness.

His "dementia" or "senility" or whatever people wanna call it is largely a media created behemoth caused by a chain reactiion to 90 minutes of TV time. Otherwise he got us out of the pandemic, did alot of the shit trump said hed do that was good but because it took work he didnt do it (infrastructure, healthcare, climate, student loans, unifying NATO, etc) - Biden's proven he can keep the country safe from enemies , foreign and domestic, that's his job. Not debaing, not running up the air force oine stairs (the guy is actually physically strong, apparently he can do one arm push ups right now if you ask David Cay Johnston)- electing Biden again for 4 years is objectively not a bad thing all things considered, and i am not a democrat or even a traditional person who gives a shit who the president is, but this year is definitely about who the president isn't more than who it is, and Biden is not the one to be scared of. i really hope we dont fuck this up because theres no do over as we found out last time

i was blissfully ignorant of the day to day in 2016, i had my own problems. in 2020 they became my problems because 4 years ago i was in my god damn house everyday watching the country go nuts in various ways, i believe this time 4 years ago is when the NBA started back up.

Just watched the episode last night as a refresher to what the final weeks of Pre-Trump presidency America and when the episode got to the end and John Oliver started to say 2016 was the worst year ever, I started laughing hysterically. Totally worth a rewatch if you are wanting a reminder of what the “good days” looked like. Great episode and references many things that now are hysterical just because it is now so much worse.

I agree, Fuck 2016. But, man, how can John Oliver outdo Beethoven’s Ninth and a terrific fire when we approach the end of 2024? If there still is a world at the end of 2024?
