    Would love to see LWT update this episode with today's version of MLM - there are a ton of influencers who post lavish lifestyles, luxury travels and proclaim they are multi-millionaires in under 2 years, and are convincing others to quit their 9-5. But to me, they are quite shady on the how and what they actually sell. You will never get anything specific about what they're actually selling and how they're making profits. Some terms/things these influencers say: DWA, master resell rights opportunity, create your own digital product, resell the course for 100% profit over and over again. Maybe this is a legitimate business, and I just don't understand how social media works nowadays. But it smells off and it would be great for John Oliver to educate us all!

    I remember seeing the Herbalife plug in La Fea Mas Bella when I was young and it was cringing them just as it is today. 1 thing that I wished John had said or at least did an extra segment on MLMs was how they market themselves heavily in low-income communities and how low-income people get screwed way more by MLMs but have no way to get any help.

  • @PrivateCTO

    @PrivateCTO

    14 күн бұрын

    It makes sense why they market to low income since their whole thing is becoming your own boss, making your own success, and climb the class ladder. Going for upper middle class households who probably already hold well paying white collar jobs isn't going too many tugs on the fish hook.

    I actually had learned about MLMs/Pyramid shemes some years ago from a drama/tradgedy/horror book I picked up at the library about a lady who got trapped in one. I can't remember the title now, and it never said MLM or pyramid scheme by name. Then I started seeing this stuff and it all seemed in the real world and it was all too eerily similar

    The way these clips are ordered gives me a slight headache (likely from having uploaded them separately and then published all at once). They should be published one after the other, even if it's just a few seconds between making each video public

    Reminiscing over these 8-year-old episodes, I like how the "And Now..." rubric often had as its theme "How is THIS still a thing?..." It took more thought to produce those pieces than pasting together clips of some news anchor repeating the same phrase over and over.
