s2022e01 - Working Signals on the HO Scale Union Pacific Railroad Evanston Sub. Operations & Realism

Ғылым және технология

Happy New Year! Episode 1 of season 2022 on the new HO Scale Union Pacific Railroad Evanston Subdivision; an N scale inspired HO layout. The layout is being built by Daryl Kruse, an experience modeler with articles in many national model train publications. The UPRR Evanston Subdivision covers the original UP mainline from Green River, WY to Ogden, UT. The layout will be a great railfan layout, but will also include lots of yard operations, local switching and MOW activity.
You may purchase items from the N scale layout at uprr-geneva-sub.square.site/
This episode features the first working signals on the UPRR Evanston Sub and continued progress at Devil's Slide. s2022e01

    Just a note, any turnouts the local crew throws are going to the turnouts for the ground crew we'll have to unlock them before they can throw them. You can simulate that by putting a key switch in line with the circuit and then when the local crew wants to line the turnout it called this factor and asked for permission

    Looks great Daryl. Was the clear coating on the magnet wire scraped off at the end of the wire on the Details West signals? You may want to consider small pins instead of the Cat5 wire, available at Digikey. The solder joint is enclosed by the sleeve of the pin and less prone to damage, shorting or breaking. Also, are you using BDLs for block detection?

  • @EvanstonSub

    @EvanstonSub

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's was scraped off. However, it's been my experience that when you solder the magnet wire to cat5 wire or whatever else, any coating melts away and electrical conductivity is good. I am using bdl168s. I'll have to try the pins.

    Nice progress. As I understand your signaling system, I believe you indicated that the dispatcher controls the signal, but the operator needs to throw all the switches. As an operator, for example, if a switch two blocks ahead is reversed, against your train, then the operator would need to normalize that switch before the dispatcher can code a permissive indication? Or in any case, on a mainline run, the operator needs to get in advance of the train, at least one block, assuring proper switch orientation, before the dispatcher can code the signal properly? Or, are you considering the dispatcher will ultimately have control of both the signals and the switches?

  • @EvanstonSub

    @EvanstonSub

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, the dispatcher controls the turnouts during an ops session. The local control is for when I operate solo.

    Shouldn't all that wiring on top of the bench work be underneath instead? Once scenery is in place, servicing wiring would be much easier underneath.

    Yes, servicing the wiring will be more difficult. However, installing the wiring from underneath is also more difficult. All the wiring must be installed while only a tiny fraction, if any, wiring will need to be serviced. So, I installed the wiring on top of the joist.

    Your buddy Mahomes didn’t fare so well today… time to make him sit in the corner for a week.

    The refs are the ones who need to sit in the corner. Although, that Chase receiver really killed them. Oh well, I'd rather they lose now than in the playoffs.

    @@EvanstonSubThat Ja’Marr Chase/Joe Burrow combination will be terrorizing NFL defences for years to come. Both are in their early 20’s; Chase had his best game of the season by far. I guess I shouldn’t be that hard on Mahomes, he did lead the team down the field with ease pretty much matching the Bengals drive for drive the whole game. It’s just that every time I watch one of your videos and I see that life size Mahomes cutout in the view, I automatically think “hey, how’d the Chiefs do this weekend?” And also right about this time of year I also start dreading how I’m going to get through the off season weeks without football once the playoffs will be over… And oh, I think this is going to be my Packers year provided this COVID bs doesn’t screw things up for them… All the best for the New Year and see ya on the next update video.
