    Thanks for showing us how good of this pdl 120 kayak battling rough water like that. i also own one I’m glad I did. One year later I’ve decided to upgrade to electric motor Minkota c30 with 100 amp lipo battery. After 7 hours of trolling taking chances battery died and was out 2.5 miles wind pick up 12-15 mph water swell current was against me could not paddle back 😅. I called for help and a couple in their motor boat towed me back. I would of been okay if had my pedal system with me but left in my truck 😬. Think safety first trying to catch a fish is not worth dying for. Be Safe And Good Luck !

    Great video...than you very much !!! I got m ot sportsman pdl 106 in 2020 and I must say it handles great. Super super steady and I am not worried at all of flipping even in bad conditions as the ones shown on this video. I have gotten into something similar, not as bad, at the lake I usually go to and the kayak did a great job. I am very happy I got it. Thank again for the video.

    Dang Mark you are giving me flashbacks to when I went to that same location (Entrance #1) a couple of weeks ago. It was the same conditions that you battled. It took approximately 35 mins going against the wind to return to the launch while battling the chops in my 2019 Outback. Glad u made it back safe. Thank u for sharing.

    Wish they had changeable speeds like a 10 speed bike!That way you could cruise faster and change gears or depending on leg strength be able to change the gear ratio/prop pitch to pick up a little more speed.I know they have to design it for everyone to be able to pedal but to be able to customize it according to your liking for more speed would be great

  • @howabouthetruth2157

    @howabouthetruth2157

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Alniemi "Probably right"........I KNOW I'm right. Why do ya think power boats only have a single forward gear. And believe me, even a tiny 2 hp motor has tons more power than ANY human. And I guarantee you, someone in the kayak industry has already tried it......quietly, without anyone else knowing. Besides, the ONLY way you could have even "2 speeds" for peddles in a kayak, the other gear besides the normal gear would have to be geared even lower, and you would be peddling your ass off and hardly going anywhere. Trust me kid.........the boating industry in all it's forms has been around for a long long time, and your dream of "2 or 3 speeds" is totally out of the question. Water is NOT like wheels rolling along. There's FAR MORE resistance in water versus rolling on dry land.

    Thank you for this review of the Old Town Topwater PDL. I have the Predator 13 and have been torn between getting the Predator PDL or the Topwater PDL. My plans are to fish as you do to include fresh water. My main concern on the Topwater PDL was how it handled in the conditions you were in and while you never look for these conditions, they do come up! I'm 67 years young and I'll be choosing the Topwater PDL thanks to your review! Keep up the superb work!

    I race OC-1 and OC-6 here in Hawaii. We live to race in the open ocean waves. Next time you’re in those conditions try to do a zig-zag route. Surf the waves for a bit at an angle inwards then trek back out in an angle then repeat. You’ll figure out how long you can surf before needing to head back out. You’ll technically travel more distance, but you’ll do it faster and more efficient saving energy. Great videos as always.

I was thinking about changing my order and getting the 12 Ft 120 PDL model but I wanted to ask you first if you think the 106 goes fast enough. I’m only 5’3 140 lbs so when I ordered the 106 I was thinking it would be easier to handle as far as loading and unloading. @@MDLRFishing never use well nuts , they do not hold things firmly , better to put a small 3 inch hole and hatch in the back and install a backing plate. Well nuts require a fairly large hole to be drilled , where as bolts with a backing plate is half that size.

    There’s so many variables to consider. If water less than 1 foot depth is not a big issue. This kayak has what it takes to compete with some that are nearly twice its price.

    I've been fishing Shimano almost exclusively since they got started way back around 1980 or soon after. Today, I am a 100% Lew's man........and not looking back. Best equipment I've ever used. ( Their pricier models from $140 and up, made only at the Korean plant, is where their best quality is......vs the China made. ) I'll put any $180 to $200 Lew's reel up against anything twice its price, both for performance and durability. Also, their customer support & service is hands down the best, barr none. All 8 of my Lew's baitcasters ( 4 Pro-G's, 2 Super Duty's, and 2 BB1 Pro's)...are well over 2 yrs old, and I fish hard, multiple times a week year round here in Florida. They perform as good as the day they were new. The ONLY problem I had was a recent failure of a clutch bearing ( anti-reverse ) in one of my Pro G's. The reel was far OUT of warranty......yet Lew's told me that clutch bearing HAD TO be defective from the start, because a clutch bearing should NOT fail like that within several years. THEY REPLACED IT & COMPLETELY SERVICED THE REEL FOR FREE, INCLUDING RETURN SHIPPING. I had this reel back ON THE WATER FISHING..........WITHIN 8 DAYS from the time I shipped it to them. I kid you not. Amazing. Lew's made a true believer out of me. You would be lucky if a reel even made it to the service dept within 8 days with any other brand.

    That was CRAZY cool. Which kayak would you prefer in those conditions? That one or the Hobie? Right now I have a Diablo Amigo but have been thinking about looking into getting a pedal/propel type. Love my Amigo but would have been toast in those conditions. Thanks for the videos, keep em coming and we’ll keep watching em.

    Good Video, but the wind still not strong enough to test. Been to my PA12 with 58kph wind, head and tail wind test, almost capsized but excellet test to its limit with my fully loaded gear including my 7" fishfinder and 43L cooler box.

    Very interesting stuff, going above and beyond for your viewers. I've never tried a pedal-drive kayak, but I have to wonder why you didn't have your paddle in hand out there in the nasty chop. Wouldn't a paddle help keep you upright?

    OK, that makes sense. I forgot that if your feet are providing the propulsion, they can't be doing the steering too. I've never been in a yak with a rudder either. The video just gave me a bit of a queasy feeling because in my experience, the paddle is the whole key to power, stability and control in the rough stuff. Just weird to see yours sitting in the keeper.

    Very little water seeps through the drive well on this kayak. It’s not enough to raise any alarms. My ‘19 Outback is the same way. Both designs are made in such a way that water will quickly find its way out of the cockpit.

    Is 1-2 ft even a swell? Lol, you must be in the Gulf. But all joking aside, you should check out Moomoo Outdoors video on the Topwater 120 off shore. He's a west coast kayaker and took his Topwater 120 PDL out in 8-10 ft. swells on a recent trip and it performed like a champ. We see that kind of thing all the time out West.
