Marine mammals have played a vital role in the history of Aotearoa. Māori and Moriori hunted seals in huge numbers for food and clothing, and many non-Māori were drawn to these shores to harvest the skins and oil of seals and whales.

    An important detail about what started the Boyd Massacre, is the the chief's son was expected to work his passage, but refused, as he saw such work as beneath him and so as punishment for insubordination, he was flogged and denied rations for the day, which was a common punishment for insubordinate sailors at the time
