Israel's far right wing has certainly been heavily aided by Netanyahu over the past few decades, but whole "we're going to grab a lot of land and kick out all the Arabs" thing far predates him. (Though his reign as head of the Likud party did get a nice start with an _Israeli_ assassinating the prime minister of Israel because the Oslo peace processes were doing too well for right-wing taste.) Sadly, they work very well in co-operation with the extremists on the other side, such as Hamas, who are apparently willing to sacrifice as many Palestinian civilians as necessary to try to wipe Israel off the map.

The signs were all there. And yet. No one pumped the breaks. I wonder if things would be the same if he just tried a two state solution in the first place.

@@stoodmuffinpersonal3144 I think you missed the point there. Netanyahu has _never_ wanted a two state solution, nor has Hamas. Pumping the brakes was not something he had any interest in; he was too busy pushing the accelerator. There are plenty of Israelis who would be happy with a two-state solution, and no doubt a fair number of Palestinians (and probably a lot more if Israel weren't stomping all over them with illegal settlements and the like). But this goes _way_ back; Netanyahu and Hamas are just the latest in the bloody-minded groups on both sides that put "winning" and "destroying the enemy" above civilian happiness, even that of their own side.

I am watching this for the first time on June 29, 2024. Back in the 90s, I was a struggling single mom, and this show brought back horrible memories. My 2nd pregnancy was rough, and I was extremely ill and put on bed rest the last 2 months, but I also had a 5 year old, so rest was hard to get. My car tags expired, and the next day, I went into labor. I called the property manager to let her know I would take care of it the moment I got out of the hospital. She said no problem. My BFF came to pick me up. As we walked out, I saw the property manager standing outside the rental office. *_She waved at us_** and said, "Good Luck!"* Apparently, *the moment we got in the car, she went inside and had my car towed.* Because it was a high-risk pregnancy and a difficult birth, I was in the hospital for 5 days. When I got out, and home with my newborn and 5 year old sons, the ticket, tow fees, and storage charges was far beyond what I could pay. I lost my car and spent the next four years on the bus with my babies while working and going to school before I was blessed with a car, and my sacrifices paid off. But I NEVER forgot how that felt. So even now, when I have the opportunity to help others, I do so. *These municipal fees and mistreatment of the poor Must Cease!!!*

16 years ago (in FL), I let a friend drive me to work while I was sick, she was speeding, she got stopped by the police and it turns out her license was suspended because her mother had used her license to drive and had gotten multiple tickets under her daughters license. So they took my friend to jail (who I had to bail out) and it took me 2 years to pay off a $492 fine for letting an unlicensed driver drive my vehicle. On the way to go bail my friend out of jail after she got arrested (same day), I got stopped for speeding (I wasn’t speeding) and he let me go cause he saw that I was distraught by giving me a warning for not having a seatbelt on (which I did have on). I was 19 so I finished paying at 21 just before I got married to my husband

What a great and historic episode! As far as I know, no other show has an official raptor and I'm so glad to know that out of all of the awful stuff he has talked about, John was able to do at least one meaningful thing to fix a problem on air so that we could go along for the ride. Those politicians deserved to lose elections for such conduct, especially that Planned Parenthood guy, I honestly don't know how they could be so awful and tactless with those poor students in the room. Also, I can't help but think of cops as road pirates because that has what they've generally been to me. One officer was great and let me off with a warning one night even though I misjudged a red light in a work zone while speeding a bit. Beyond that, another officer was kind enough to overlook not having current insurance cards on me, but I didn't appreciate getting an open container ticket in the process of getting told I had a tail light out. The one in Clinton, MO, though, was conducting a speed trap because the highway drops from like 70 to 40 and then back again over the course of like 4 speed zones as you go through town and he was chilling at like the second speed change. Oddly enough, that was also about the last time that town ever got any money from me.

I had tickets that I couldn’t pay, none of them were moving violations they were things like a muffler, a headlight, little things like that which came from being extremely broke. I was so broke that I couldn’t pay rent and eat every day and so the tickets, though not very big, might as well been 10,000 to me. I paid the first one, but when the second one came, for a problem I was already frantically trying to fix on my car with almost no money just made me so defeated. I think I just “forgot about it.” Then my tickets got fines, then my fines went up, then I was on a payment plan but got stuck in a loop of paying fines I could t afford to pay. Then I got picked up and brought to jail but, this is the surprising part - the fact that I was unable to pay my tickets was not helped by spending the day in lock up. Then my fines went up. Then finally the fines were so big that I’d have better luck running for president and winning than paying them, so They took my license away. the fees were about 3500 dollars, which is half as much as I made a year. Obviously then I became homeless. That was all Hudson New York, 2007. I’m still extremely angry about it all. BUT! I moved to nyc where there’s good transport and I could get to work without a car and also have a lot of fun and make my life better than those small town cops’ life’s ever could be. But… basically what I mean to say is I’m finding this episode extremely triggering.

This one pains me because I was in this boat for most of 2023. 😓 I had outstanding traffic tickets from 2017 that I forgot about. The reason they were outstanding was because I couldn’t afford them. ONE was for speeding (

Absolutely! As they said in the report they we outlawed debtor’s prisons in the 1800 yet the legal system has done everything they can to find workarounds to reinforce poverty as a crime.

🤦 Me just realizing that Jamaican accents sound the way they do because they were British colonies. I had never really thought about it, like a lot of things, obviously. What did I think originally? Idk man, probably that the Islands were just so chill and enough AMERICANS had come over to hang out that Jamaica got their speech from us and an easygoing beachlife. Don't mind me.

why are you guys trying to read intention off a guy blatantly contradicting himself to pander to more people. the show specifically calls attention to how completely he walked back on that statement. he is doing the politician thing of being vague so people can read him however they want and you are 100% doing that

Many think those %-based fines are to punish the rich the same (which they do), but they also punish the poor the same too (not perfectly but more than a $250 fine does).

I mean… those New Hampshire people were right that the bill was silly and unnecessary. A good lesson for the kids to learn since Gov is full of such bills and more are always pouring in. Yes, teach those kids to not submit such things and to get rid of those that already exist, it will be better for everyone.

I remember when parents were trying to use scouts as the gay, and trans conversion therapy because they didn't allow gays or trans people in scouts that was the parents thought process. That you can't be this because I forced you into a program that has a bunch of "cis straight heterosexual Christian males" in it who are also likely being forced into it. Except I have a few DSD's, and several people I knew were on testrone for various reasons, and people did make out in the woods after dark quite commonly. It didn't make people less gay, it didn't define people's genders, it didn't do anything the phobes wanted forced on us, if anything it did the opposite.

I'm gonna be honest and blunt, we have enough useless *beep* on the books, so I agree with striking down the bill. Legal research is becoming more difficult by the bill, and you know we have a shortage of legal resources. Don't make it worse.

I'd say those New Hampshire kids actually got the authentic legislative experience: self-aggrandizing assholes arguing over petty shit. I think a similar story featured on The Daily Show (maybe?). If I recall, it was in NY, and was a proposal to make yogurt the official state snack.
