S1E3: Adaptive Reuse Architecture |The National Museum of Natural History

A 1939 neoclassical government building designed by Architect Antonio Toledo is redesigned and repurposed into a museum by Architect Dominic Galicia and Interior Architect Tina Periquet. The design team nobly sought to continue telling the story of the building, resulting in a exemplar of adaptive reuse.

I visited this 3X. I'm awe-struck every time I go. It's my first time to hear the designers behind it and I appreciate it more now. Are the architects Filipino? They don't sound like other Filipino architects in other channels. Their ideas, depth and articulation are different.

Dom & Tina are both Filipino designers (architect and interior designer, respectively) trained in Pratt University in New York. They are also married and share a studio space in Makati.

I always hope that aside from fixing the building, the surrounding environment could have been beautifully landscaped. That's what usually is missing in government developments.

Incredible preservation! Went to visit the museum last month with my husband and 2 younger sisters who came back to the Philippines for the first time in 14 years. We were truly amazed by the well thought out design of the whole building, definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Manila. Thank you so much for the informative video, it’s given us a new found appreciation for the building and it’s architectures 💕

You’re right. We’re still spellbound every time we go. We need more inspired spaces in the Phils. Can’t imagine the effort (and fight) needed to bring life into this project. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.

This is what the govt should do with other deteriorating heritage buildings--turn them into beautiful spaces! We have an excess of architects yet we don't value good design as a nation :((

You’re right. Developers should be held to higher standards. A view is a two way responsibility - if we build something and enjoy a view, we have to take care of the view of those affected by our building.
