In this episode I finish fitting off all the electrical components in the van. I've always found that once the electrical fit off is complete it always brings the job to life!
Remember I am in Australia, so I go by wiring rules AS/NZS 3000 & AS/NZS 3001. These rules apply to Australia and New Zealand for wiring installations and relocatable premises. If you are watching from a different country, you're wiring rules will most likely differ!
The heart of my system is an Enerdrive 200Ah 12V Lithium Iron Phosphate battery. Most of my electrical components to do with the battery setup are made by a company called Enerdrive (in Australia).
However Enerdrive only deal with selected large retail outlets, so I had to buy through Battery World (Enoggera, QLD). Enerdrive are still available for support on their product.
All the internal powerpoints in my van are double pole, which means it switches the active and also neutral conductors. This is a rule required by AS 3001.
My van is designed to be electrically 100% off the grid, however I do have the option to plug into mains if I want. This is the reason I have 580W of solar to keep my 200Ah battery topped up even in the cloudiest of days.
I also have a DC2DC charger which allows me to charge my house battery whilst I am driving from the alternator. This has been very helpful, but this system does not rely on it.

    To some the electrical system seems over the top, but I think it is just perfect for my personal needs. We really do need all the solar on the roof to keep the batteries nice and charged on consecutive cloudy days. We are fully off the grid, so going with lithium-ion was the best choice for me, and having the ability to charge from the alternator really helps on the days where we get very little sun. Great build Jaz! I want to build my electrical nearly identical to yours.. I was wondering how many volts /amps your alternator pushes and how much of a charge it provides when you're driving. On a cloudy day, of course. Also, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I've learned a ton watching your stuff👍👍👍

    Yeah i was going to document my van build, but you and Greg do such a great job it’s become a case of ‘why bother’ !! Because mine was an ex ambo paramedics box back, I’ve got a hell of a job sorting it out. Can’t find anyone that knows how to sort the computer driven system. Varley who built it don’t get back to me, yet in decommissioning they ripped out the computer that drives it! What a headache . Do you know anyone in Sydney who knows their stuff?

    I don't know about not making a series...someone should do a series about a high end build that costs nearly nothing. I suppose if I ever did build one of these things, I would definitely go ultra resourceful, and bring all of my various skills together. So far, I usually see it is just ultra pure liquid crap where people take garbage and shove it in a van, where you would definitely be roughing it, _or_ ultra expensive and luxurious like this one. I can't even imagine what this would cost. I was surprised for example that he didn't do up his own battery controller circuit, given that he has an electrical background. I know 30 amps is a lot different than your average cell phone charger, but with the right heat sinking and switching circuitry it can be done. Even Lee Blake didn't do this, and he has an engineering background. What I did like was how Lee put all the high voltage in one central place, eliminating the vast majority of the wiring job.

    dude, really appreciate you sharing this, both part 1 and 2. Just from the short descriptions it makes the whole process a little more clear. You have a power "room" or "area", all power eminates from there, need to splice in switches and make sure to follow standards and use fuses, breakers, correct wire size choice. The rest is basically just trying to run wires to locations as neat as possible, twisting together connections, fairly plug and play. I'll probably setup and run most of my wiring myself but have it double checked by an electrician.....you guys aren't cheap :P.... keep up the awesome work! nice little channel.

    Nicely done with the shower vent. It was a struggle to find anything that would fit under solar panels. I ended up with a Ventline fan, which has the advantage that the lid will only go up as high as it can, so mine hits the bottom of the solar panels which works just fine.

    the maxxair fans may work better for you if only used to exhaust air out and you install some venting through the floor to the underneath of the van for the fresh air intake. This works especially well when the sun is shining and you are bringing in shaded air, although I believe it just helps with the overall air flow in general. You have done a fabulous job on your van build Jaz thanks for the great videos.

Impressive that this slim Li-ion battery could handle such loads...what are the size of the battery cables, 50sqmil? Hydraulic crimper and bubble scale for the switches/outlets, never seen the use of them in anay camper build! You and Greg Virgoe are the most impressive camper builders, must be because of the use of a Sprinter... :-D Thx for the vid, safe travels! :-)

    Hey Jaz, congrats that you are in your van! Awesome mate looking forward to how it grows on your journey, great work! Also I was curious how your maxx fans would go as a cooling/airflow on a hot night ...when you installed the maxx fans we had just put two sirrocco fans exactly like yours in our pod. Found them awesome in North Qld and SEQ through this summer...totally worth it ...why two...a gut feeling on my partners ‘s behalf I thought she was nuts at the time as we are a seriously small space. her reasoning was that TVan tracktrailer 2017 new release just upgraded their one fan to two via their customer requests after twenty or so years of feedback, either side of sleeping area...when we looked at buying a second hand one she refused it on the fact it was a lot of coin and it was designed by old coots who only thought of strength and durability, good things to think of but put liveability second apparently evidenced by one fan and no cross ventilation...she insisted we put in two for uninterrupted airflow across bodies in a confined space...she has prove correct...the only time we had to use above the 2 setting was early February so hottest time of the year all others only on first setting. So interested how it all goes. Cheers mate.

  • @JaznLori

    @JaznLori

    6 жыл бұрын

    Cheers mate! yeah I initially thought the 2 maxx air fans would be enough, and my initial idea was have 1 on extract and 1 on blowing down to create a draft through the van, as this does happen to some degree on hot nights i really needed direct airflow hence why i installed the caframo sirroco II fan, which is awesome. If its really hot i will use both maxx air fans extracting on a low speed and the wall fan, but mainly use the front maxx fan as an extractor for when cooking,

    I knew you'd make it b-e-a-utiful. It's really good to have knowledgeable people like you to learn from. Thank you so much for taking your time with the weight questions in the previous video. The setup weighed less than I'd expected. 1. Are there benefits to having such a long wire from the battery to the shunt? 2. Have you made any precautions in case of a crash or fire? Would first responders be able to isolate either the solar panels or the battery from the outside? 3. Would it be very disadvantageous to separate the different parts of the system if you wanted to utilise space around the cabin? 3a. Could you move some components under the vehicle to save space and move weight front/ center? 3b. Could you move the battery monitor to the cabin with your setup? Can you have more monitors on that shunt? 4. Would it be possible to wire the head unit to the off-grid system, to enjoy tunes, sans engine? 5. Do you charge electronics on the AC? 5a. Is there high loss going DC/AC/DC? 5b. Are there sine issues with going with car power chargers for electrionics instead? 5c. Will cost of special chargers outweigh the eventual benefits?

    Thanks a lot! 1. No you want to keep it as short as possible, but i left a little bit of slack just because both ends were already lugged from enerdrive and i didnt want to lug them again, the length I have it fine. 2. Everything is as secure as possible and I have a fire extuignisher on board. I dont think first responders will be running to the switchboard to isolate you solar or breakers in case of a crash(breakers should isolate themselves under most fault conditions). 3. It would be just a lot harder because youd have longer cable runs, which you definitely dont want with 12V. I personally wouldnt do it,but it is possuble, youd be using larger guage cable and cost way more. 3a. I guess you could but if they were under the vehicle they would have to be in some sort of extreme weatherproof box that breathes... (unnlikely.) 3.b . yes you could have it in the cabin, pretty much anywhere you want. and i believe you can have multiple ones i think. 4. umm yeah it is possible to wire the head unit up to the house battery, but again this wouldn't make too much sense in my mind. but possible. 5. yes, I charge laptops, cameras, phones etc all on the 240V powerpoints which are fed from the inverter. 5a. There are minimal losses in the inverter, but yes there are always losses. It only goes once from DC to AC, thats the only function in inverter mode. however if connected to the grid it converts 240 into 12V but there are always minute losses. 5.b . it all depends on what you need. for the couple of hundred dollars it cost for a charge to be able to charge from the alternator i think it is without a doubt worth it,. Thanks for the questions :)_

    Thanks a lot yeah the battery system was the most expensive component! The lithium battery actually sits around 14.2V when it is fully charged I believe, So i think it is the tiniest bit higher than your typical 12V car starter battery, So i would imagine it needs a little bit higher voltage to charge it compared to a standard car battery, but all the charging equipment would adjust for this.

    Holy shit man. This is incredible. You should be super proud of what you've accomplished. Super inspirational, I am about to do the electric myself, but have some questions I just can't figure out. For the lights as well as most of the wiring, when you drill into the wall or ceiling, there are no visible wires. How do you pull the correct ones from inside of the paneling? How do you pull the wires out if you cant see them? As well as how do you know your pulling the correct wires? Same thing for the back lights, it was just a small pilot hole, how did you fish the correct wires out? Also, for the back camera, I'm assuming it was planned from the start and the green, yellow and pinks wires have been accounted for before putting the walls up, but if not, how did you manage to run that wire from the back of your car to the front through all the cabinets and walling?

  • @JaznLori

    @JaznLori

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hey Gene, I definitely recommend watching episode 9. which is electrical pt.1, which is me wiring up the van and then you can see that I have planned every wire in advance before and sheeting or cabinetry was in. Also being an electrician I've just had a lot of practise with roughing in, and the cutting out and fitting off, so when I cut holes in something I already know there is going to be a wire in that cavity because I ran the wires there myself. hope this helps. also watch Ep.10 so you can see me sheeting over the wires. cheers!

  • @ImHewg

    @ImHewg

    6 жыл бұрын

    I've seen those episodes, good stuff. So you already planned the location of all the wires. I guess since you do this for a living you didn't miss any components and didn't have to run any new wires. The switch panels all look like they run similar gauge red and black wires, how do you differentiate them to each specific location when there were no markings? I'm guessing you just hook it up and see which lights run? I'm just worried when I do it myself, I will forget a wire and have to tear down my whole ceiling or side paneling because I didn't realize a wire had to be run a certain way and need to reconnect it.

    You could add some kind of tape at the end of every wire and write on it what it is used for, including intended voltage? That way if you pull them out of your ceiling or wherever you know what it is. :) You do that too if you disconnect large amounts of car engine connectors (or any system really).

    Thanks for the reply. I found a bigger problem anyway, my breakers are nearly on the floor. After reading the regulations they have to be 1.2m above it. So that's an issue considering they're in my Victron EasySolar box which there's no way I can lift that high. So we'd have to extract them and mount in a new switchboard up higher. I'll talk to my electrician about it. Another thing you mentioned, you have to use double pole switches? My reading of the regulations is the only mention of double pole switches in AS/NZS 3001 is to refer to AS/NZS 3012 (Electrical installations - Construction and demolition sites). Which isn't relevant to a normal campervan? Does that sound right? My sparky wasn't sure, I'll have to check with a caravan electrical inspector I suspect...

    I talked to my electrical inspector. It'll be fine to have the cupboard inset and down low, as you say, as long as it's easily accessable. It's very normal for campervans break the rule about having the panel too low to the floor. I also confirmed in New Zealand at least, you're allowed single pole power points. It might only be Australia that dual pole are required.

    Lithium batterys are much better at supplying a more constant voltage output over the span of the battery charge, but AGM voltage drops off much quicker. I believe it's called peukerts effect. You need to get the right size battery for your loads.

    Hi, Jaz! Thank you very much for the video. You are the best in this subject on KZread. But unfortunately I do not understand everything. Could you explain to me in more detail what is below BMS Ralay Driver. I mean all the red wires 12v (plus). Unfortunately, on your videos and photos, these wires are covered with covers and it's not clear witch wire goes to witch device. How are they connected to the big red fuse box and to the Remote Battery Switch? What are their parameters, diameter, etc.? What are the values of fuses on them? Which red (plus) 12v wire is connected to which device? The scheme of connection or a photo from a different angle, from below, would help very much. I hope that you will answer me. And it will be even better if you post these schemes and photos in a blog on your website. Thank you in advance for the answer.

    Thanks for watching! Sorry a BMS means Battery Management System, it is the device that monitors your battery to keep it safe. In terms of the 12v fuse box, There is a 6mm red and black cable that feed the Fuse Box. The black negative is fed from the battery negative bus bar. the red positive wire is fed from a fused bus bar link from the battery system also.

    Thanks for the answer. But I see that I incorrectly asked my question. I did not mean the BMS itself, but those red wires and connections that are under the Remote Battery Switch. Unfortunately, it's hard for a layman to understand what kind of fuses they have, how they are connected to each other and to other devices. Please write about it, and better make a drawing.

Why did you not go with their 200ah "ePower B-Tec" battery that has all the monitoring and smarts built into it rather than having to install the battery management and monitoring systems separately? Did you just want more control over it or was there an advantage to doing it that way? Travel With Jaz Hey man, me and a bloke are just finishing up a 19 unit site and there are two M.E.N links on our site - one at the front pillar and one at the main switchboard.... I can only understand why there is no M.E.N link when the van is off grid because you've protected the installation with combos - the fault loop impedance is irrelevant as the combo will trip on imbalance between active & neutral, and that the neutral to ground relay closes when the inlet is hooked up and the inverter receives power on the 240v IN terminals... Is this the correct understanding? I have read the blog posts Cheers brotha

    Not a sparky mate, but good understanding of inverter / charger wiring I found this link (draft from victron, docs.google.com/document/d/1Kvp46nznDOZgh-UOG3WLgpLhL3JFni8UGGDwwm_N38Q/edit). "The boat is connected to shore power, the AC input relay is closed, and the neutral-earth relay is open. The AC output system relies on the shore connection to provide the neutral to earth link, so the RCD is functional When the boat is disconnected from shore power, the AC input relay is open, and the neutral-earth relay is closed. The inverter/charger has made the Neutral to earth link itself, this so the RCD in the AC output circuit is operational."
