Good for you. I turned 18 during Basic Training, back in 1989. And if I can make a recommendation, try and get your hands on a copy of "Bernard Freyberg, V.C.: Soldier of Two Nations". Freyberg was the commander of the NZEF during WW2 and the Governer General of NZ after that. In my view, he's a massively underrated military genius. His arguments with Churchill during the early stages of the war are probably the key to the allies not being kicked right out of the Mediterranean theatre in the first year or so.

My koro died in the early months of the war. He came from Motiti island. 16 of my whanau fought in the Second World War including my father and his younger brother with one KIA at Casino. Two were 15.

Another reason for why some Pakeha didn't want to go to war was because they were Irish and still had hard feelings with the British, just like the Waikato Iwi

The Scottish National War Memorial in the capital Edinburgh gives the figures for Scottish dead in WW1. With a population of 4.8 million people the number of Scots who died was just under 135,000 or roughly 27,000 men per million of the population, just slightly less than the German loss of 30,000 men per million. New Zealand was way down the casualty scale with 18,000 men per million of their population. Still a horrific number, but, to claim that New Zealand suffered the worst per capital is totally wrong.

@@mrt4916 9% of New Zealand's casualties were Scottish born. So English born were probably a great deal higher. With it's reliance on the UK for defence and exports it was really still a part of Britain with a devolved government. But as I said if you understand what per capita means it's losses were still way bellow that of e.g. Germany, and on the allied side Scotland.

I did say that New Zealand’s casualties were terrible in my first post. What the video was saying was New Zealand’s casualties were the highest per capital. I merely pointed out that although they were terrible numbers, they were way lower as a percentage of the population than that of other countries. I.e. they were incorrect.

You conveniently left out the Boer War - What were the Kiwi's doing there? Fighting other peoples wars? Thats when that theme started.....perhaps the producers of this show should read Nicky Hagars books...
