S1 E7 Using a Ball Bearing and Tack Iron on Comic Books to Remove Deep Indentations by KaptainMyke This episode features 1987 Marvel Comics AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #290 First Printing Peter Proposes to MJ. We focus on the art of using a steel ball bearing and a tack iron to remove deep writing indentations on a comic book cover. This is an extreme example given using the ball bearing and tack iron technique in this video. Your methods will remain similar in nature, depending on the era, page quality and thickness of book.

I got one plate (to use on the bottom of my press on the orange pad) from Amazon. Just search it. Make sure the plate is at least an eighth of an inch thick steel. They do rust so be aware when using them to press.

@@dp644 You can use steel or aluminum plates. Stainless steel does not rust. I recommend 2 steel plates 1/8" thick 9x12 kaptainmyke.com/products/steelplates The only time you have to be concerned of rust is if your books are oversaturated from humidity tank or your room environment has too much humidity in the air that would cause rust. Good luck! :) For a complete comprehensive list of recommend products, please go to www.kaptainmyke.com/products Thank you!

What are the temperatures for when your tack iron is set to 2 or 3? My tack iron has a digital gauge. Thanks.

4:36 I received days ago the tack iron, but the digital version; from Amazon. Don't know if work the same way but if it does, my question is: what temperature is 2 and 3? If you use any other setting for whatever reason, please let me know. The setting numbers run from 100 to 200 in my iron.

1 - 172F 2 - 234F 3 - 280F 4 - 327F 5 - 387F Keep it around setting 2 and do not leave the iron in any one spot longer than 5 seconds at a time. I would get the PROLUX sealing tack iron on Amazon if you can... those settings are a bit higher than just 200. amzn.to/3PzJwgM

is it recommended to always do humidity before pressing?

For older vintage books - yes. For newer books 2002-Present - no. Unless the modern age book has several deep dents or impact dents - yes. Any book prior to 2002 can benefit from some form of humidity to reset the paper fibers which creates new paper memory for the book in question.
