much simpler than the video i watched, they had me manually push the pin down inside the gun instead of just hitting the trigger to release it. appreciate the tip

They don't recommend you pull the trigger. That internal sear deactivation lever actually fell out on me when I tried to reasseble it. Added/unnecessary complexity that has me running back to Glock.

The newest Shield Plus guns (got mine end of February) don't have that little yellow pin/lever, whatever, to move anywhere.

You bet! They don't need quite the amount of maintenance we were lead to believe growing up. I think dad just liked getting the free labor out of it. You can always do it more than that but a good field strip, dry brush, wipe down and oiling should do the trick!

Most effective tutorial for disassembling/reassembling a Shield I have seen. He uses a flashlight that focuses on parts of the firearm he is talking about. Then, he provides verbal repetitions to give the beginner a realistic sense of how much force to use that guarantees a smooth reassembly. Clear, excellent speaking voice that doesn’t talk down to the the listener. Look forward to more content from you, Sir!

Yep, super similar mechanics on both. Lots of the manufacturers go with either this style or the glock-style takedown tab method. If you can identify which type you're working with you can figure out 80+% of modern firearms. 1911s are their own beast of course lol

Just bought one of these and put thirty or so rounds through, great shooting gun, feels really well in the hand especially for being a compact pistol. However when I got it home and did this exact field strip, that locked slide spring separated sending part of it into my stomach and the heavier part right into my tv!!! I haven't contacted SW on this yet but I felt the need to bring attention that you shouldn't trust that spring to stay together I winched in pain when you just kinda dropped it on the table, but yeah, great take down video

You know S&W actually designed this pistol with that sear deactivation lever exactly for the reason that you wouldn't need to pull the trigger to disassemble?

Suggesting an alternative to pulling the trigger (~2:10) to remove the slide. There's a yellow/brass-tone sear deactivation lever near the top of the magwell (barely visible at ~2:16, best view at 6:10). With the slide locked back, pushing that lever down/forward will let one remove the slide without touching the trigger. The full size M&P comes with a tool in the backstrap, but you need a pen or small screwdriver for the Shield. Putting the magazine back in after reassembly resets the sear lever.

Great, great video but I do have a question. My Shield Plus is brand new and has not been fired yet. That take down lever, like you stated, is hard as hell to move. Can I add a little oil around that or inside when I have it torn down or will that cause other issues? Thank you for such an informative video!

the only thing I've found to help break them in is to use them. Both disassembling multiple times and shooting it a bunch. It'll never be butter soft easy but it will loosen up to something manageable in just a few trips to the range and take downs in my experience.
