S. Korea, Japan, China summit: What's NOT on the agenda? | DW News

The leaders of South Korea, Japan and China are gathering in Seoul ahead of talks aimed at improving relations. It's the first trilateral meeting between the three neighbors in more than four years - and there's much to discuss - with trade, climate change and disaster response all on the table. However, the official agenda doesn't include discussion around North Korea's nuclear program or China's territorial dispute over Taiwan and the South China Sea.

It doesn't take a geopolitical expert to understand the following: 1) Discussing Taiwan with China is not how you "improve relations" with China, which is why it is not being discussed at this summit with the goal of improving relations. 2) It's misguided to think that North Korea listens to China, especially on issues regarding its nuclear program, which China agreed with the US/West to sanction during Bush Jr. and Obama. Russia, on the other hand, has supported North Korea's nuclearization, and as such, is arguably closer to North Korea than China.

Interesting, it does actually require some geopolitical interest and North Korea watching. 😊 So you think China has no or little influence? They have been propping up the regime and sponsor it with trade deals. But you think that NK is rogue towards China as in like Israel is not containable by the US that props up that regime? How would we know? Just really curious, because NK is such a wild card (and therefore a flashpoint)

I think you are a bit off on CN-DPRK relations. Yes, China isn't exactly happy about their nukes, but that's because they have an actual military alliance with each other, and China doesn't want to risk nuclear escalation on its borders, especially if the PLA is involved in the fight. Russia also supported the sanctions. I don't think there are significant differences in the quality of relations the DPRK has with either China or Russia. There is the aspect that western sanctions against Russia have allowed Russia to be a bit more public about their relations with Korea. China has supported them significantly too, they are just not very public about it.

Three ministers in Hatoyama's Cabinet have had "car accidents" and "committed suicide" because of their promotion of the Asian Free Trade Area (FTA), friendship with China, and East Asian integration. Abe did the same thing in his first term, had his office searched by the Special Search Department and stepped down. As the leader of the LDP, Abe continued to push for "national normalisation" even after stepping down, and we all know how that ended for him.

Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. ... that Japan and the Philippines will be found to be the corner-stones of such a Pacific security system and that if we can contrive to retain effective control over these areas there can be no serious threat to our security from the East within our time. Taiwan was added to the Pacific security system after Chiang's army retreated to the island of Taiwan in 1949. South Korea was added after the Korean War in 1953. Appreciate the dialogue between the Asian countries who are neighbours and will remain so. Nations will have conflicts to varying extent, but it's important that they engage in dialogues to work on the common areas of interests. Especially as the West, led by USA, wanna take Japan n South Korea to their side in countering China for the Western interests. The Asian giants have quite a lot in common with each other and could have mutually beneificial relation in many areas right from commerce, technology, energy, healthcare et al. Obviously their is a long history of conflicts that cast a mighty shadow but how long are we gonna carry with that. You gotta co-exist in this planet for years to come. I sincerely wish the relations between China, Japan and Korea gets better from here on and that they are wiser to challenge the Western ploy to drive the nation's into conflict.

    S. Korea and Japan are geographically close to N. Korea. If they are concerned about long range N. Korean weapons that can reach the US miiltary bases, (Okinawa, Guam, Pearl, even mainland US) then they are concerned about US interests. My guess is that China is going to try to talk Japan and S. Korea into looking it their interest not the US's interest. China is both Japan and S. Korea's biggest trading partner. And neither has challenged Taiwan's or the SC sea status like the US has. The US however has great leverage over both S. Korea and Japan with the possibility of economic sanctions.
