Ryzen Unraid Server 128GB RAM Upgrade
Ғылым және технология
Can the Asus Crosshair VI Hero support 128GBs of RAM? Why yes, yes it can! In a particular surprise to me this board is apparently able to support more than 64GBs of RAM despite the documentation saying it does not. Let's install it.

No you!
Thanks for making this video. It's great news that a x370 board can handle 128gb ram. Now I'm almost 100% sure that I can upgrade to 128gb ram too on my asus x470 gaming-f mainboard.
Well done!
so satisfying haha cool vid
I was just wondering if I could do this..thanks!
VERY COOL
Corsair vengeance has bad support and sometimes makes it impossible for your pc to boot. Not to mention I think you could have instead of doing a ram upgrade, upgrade the stock cooler. But your build seems fine, good job.
Hi, I saw your video and I'm thinking about doing the same thing with my Crosshair VI Extreme, (the more complete sister of the Crosshair VI Hero 😅) I work with motion graphics animations with After Effects and I'm thinking about this upgrade to give it a extra life for my build, ( After Effects is a black hole for RAM as you might imagine😅) in conjunction with a 5950x in the future. How has your system performed over the last 3 years? Was there any instability in the system? thanks in advance for your attention 😎👍

I haven’t had any issues at at. It’s still running great to this day. I can’t remember if it’s in that video or another one but I did end up having bad ram which I replaced and it’s been solid

@@SPXLabs update: it worked! I bought 4 modules of this model here from Kingston (kf432c16bba-32) and it worked like a glove on the x370 system, and I'll say more: at the moment I had to divide this massive amount of ram between two computers, so for now both have a configuration of 96GB of ram (2x32 on channel A and 2x16 on channel B) sharing with my old Crucial 64GB kit (BL16G32C16U4B), as both are CL16, I think it helped with the compatibility between them, but I intend to completely replace the memories in the two computers in the next few months. thanks again for your video, you saved me a motherboard upgrade and together with the future upgrade of a 5950x, this system gained a probable lifespan of another 5 years without substantial upgrades ✌😁

That’s great. You can never have too much ram.
Thanks, just thinking about x470 and 128GB of RAM.
I see your CPU is running at 56c. Any concerns? I just installed a 3700x and suspect I'm having temperature issues.
@SPXLabs

Nope, no concerns. The CPU is idle more often than not and when it is working it’s only for a couple hours or so; and even then it’s still probably safe. What kind of issues?
Did you experience any system instability going 3200 MHz. I have the same memory but only run 3000 MHz.
@SPXLabs

Nope. The only RAM issue I’ve had was the one time I ran out of memory.
Would an nvidia quadro P2000 not have been a cheaper option for the transcoding issue?

Run your vms on an unassigned ssd.
For 128gb I only can find 3200mhz cl16 or 3600mhz cl18 which one do think is better I´ll buy a 5950x and I´ll use it for rendering 3D simulations etc.

www.newegg.com/g-skill-128gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820374083 I’ve heard CL14 is the way to go with the 5000 series. But to answer you I’d get 3200 CL16 instead. There is definitely CL16 3400+ kits out there, depending on your country I guess.

I had that problem with the regular dominator ram, thankfully I ran memTest86 and caught the issue early, returned the faulty ram for working RAM. It took 3 tries but I ended up with working ram

I have another question for you. What is your backup strategy for your UNRAID Server? I'm not sure if that would be the best approach but, I was thinking of building a building a Proxmox box with 2 UNRAID VMs. 1 of them would be the NAS available on the network where the other one would be used for backup purposes. 6 Drives each (1 parity disk per unraid vm). I was initially thinking of doing manual backups with external docks but, that is less efficient. What approach would you use or currently use?
@SPXLabs
4 жыл бұрын
I do remote backups with power shell or just manually dragging and dropping things. Locally I just periodically use my other server and back up my stuff. I only have about 5TBs so it’s pretty simple and quick.
@ptessier73
4 жыл бұрын
@@SPXLabs I have about that much myself. For now it is not a problem. But when it grows to something much bigger in the future, it will be harder to backup lets say, 20 tb of stuff. Well more or less, I suppose I could do that on two 10 tb hard drives using a external hdd enclosure. It is just more of a pain in the butt to have to do it manually. You mentioned you do your backups manually with powershell. UNRAID has no backup function?

So you're not using ECC RAM. Now I know this is a debate that I see everywhere doesn't matter of FreeNas forums or Unraid, or anything related to servers. ECC is supposed to protect servers and from data corruption but, I was never able to find any real evidence where ECC did protect or using NON-ECC was the cause. I don't know how long you have been building servers for but I thought I would ask you, what is your opinion on that subject and do you think ECC ram is worth it?
@SPXLabs
4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn’t get a notification of your post. According to the unraid developers. Ecc will not have any significant improvement on your unraid server, they said to get ecc if it makes you feel better. I use to be on that ecc train when it was used ddr3 but ddr4 ecc is stupid expensive. So I’m going to try non ecc and see how far that gets me. So far so good.

@@SPXLabs I should have deleted this comment but forgot about it. Regarding ECC, the price for DDR4 ECC really is crazy which is one of the reason, if I can get away using NON-ECC I probably will, at least for UNRAID. In any case, I intend to make regular backups of my UNRAID array, at least the very important stuff. But that may change if I decide to build a PROXMOX Server with a UNRAID VM. Reason is, Proxmox, if I remember, uses ZFS. If I use ZFS to create a data pool for my VMs, then that will leave me with very little choice but to go with ECC which also means I'll have to buy a ASROCK MB since my Crosshair VII Hero doesn't support ECC :(.
@SPXLabs

ECC is crazy expensive right now. One thing you could do is go unraid for now and if you end up hating it hopefully ddr5 ram will be a thing and ddr4 will become widely available on the used market. Also I’m not getting any notifications from any comments. I just happen to manually be checking

@@SPXLabs I am just preparing the ground for my server project in terms of hardware and software. And DDR5 is coming out soon as well along with the new Zen 3 4000 series. This will lower the prices of DDR4 and the 3000 series. So for the moment I'm being patient and doing my research.
