Ryzen Threadripper 7980X Undervolt & Overclock to 5750 MHz With TRX50-Sage | SkatterBencher #66

Ғылым және технология

In today's video, I overclock the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7980X 64-core processor up to 5750 GHz with the ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE motherboard and EK custom loop water cooling.
This will be the third time I overclock a Ryzen Threadripper CPU after the 3990X in SkatterBencher #36 and the 5990X in SkatterBencher #43. Those were also 64-core processors, but Zen 2 and Zen 3, respectively.
While I struggled quite a bit to tune the 3990X and 5990X, the Zen 4 Threadripper seems much more accessible to optimize. I hope you enjoy the video!

I'm very impressed by the OC ability of the new Threadripper. Thanks for showing us the multiple strategies we can get advantage of. Hopefully I can try these out if I ever get my hands on a 7000 series Threadripper. 😄

Awesome CPU for tuning ❤ In last OC strategy, manual OC, it was also possible set DOS on enabled, right? To keep high single core performance working 🙂 Lol, I'm looking for 96 core and CO per core tuning😂

Yes, correct! You can see that with the AI Overclocking strategy which uses DOS.

What an absolute beast! There is no point to getting a 7950X3D and thinking it will ever compare with Threadripper 7000 if you can afford it!

Connecting the water cooling to the house heating system could be amazing. It should be able to handle the 1000W heat and provide "free" heat, atleast here in northern Europe.

I am interested in the 7970x As I will be running different VMs and one or two of them is gaming. I am wondering how well for example only OC 6 cores will perform. So I guess finding the best CCD to choose from and select cores from that CCD to OC. (Cross CCD virtualizationing can worsen performance) That way I can OC where I want it, without hurting thermals to much.

Yes, manual per core OC will be the right approach for that use-case

I'm going to do it, I'm going to ask. How does the OC 7980X compare to a 7800X3D in gaming benchmarks? I do video and game production (Unreal), but I also play games, mostly DOTA2, but I enjoy a variety of other games from time to time. My new PC will either be a 7800X3D + 5090 or a TR + 5090. The TR seems on paper a god 20-30% behind the X3D chips, but this OC seems strong, perhaps enough to close the gap to within 5-10%? @Skatterbencher

I had a look back at the 7800X3D performance results and looks like I only have comparable data for Tomb Raider where both platforms hit 204 FPS with the RTX 2080 TI when overclocked. However, for real performance comparisons I would suggest you check out real reviewers :)

Did you get good contact over the IHS with the EK strx4 waterblock/were the CCDs evenly cooled? I had some issues getting good contact over the entire IHS with my old 3990X.

Seemed fine when I checked. Some CCDs will run hotter due to production variation.

Thanks, @@SkatterBencher . Fair enough about the variation; I think the issue is when it's all the more peripheral ccds that are running hotter, which is what I observed. But may have just been idiosyncratic to my cpu or waterblock.

Hiya ! Great video, thank for that! Just corious, I am looking for PC where I am really need Single core - for super fast editing like in 2D and 3D apps, like Houdini, Nuke, Maya, and on mean time good to have that power for rendering results. I see that CPU is by default 3.2Ghz and boost up to 5.1Ghz...whatt is does mean about boost is it boost CCX0 only where need for single core tasks(or it is like true get not whole CCX0, but get only core0 for example).. or it is like situation when You do job on single core it is turn on on 5.1Ghz, and then single core start mixing with Multi-core task - where CPU start averaging-mixing CPU and that 5.1Ghz going to low down - average... so the Idea is what about - is it possible get CXX0 and make boost this closer for 4.5Ghz - 5.1Ghz - just for single core tasks, and rest CXX1... using as is , You think it is smart way for tuning in the CPU? and also is it really bad for keep CPU in this condition for long time period. Again Many Thanks!

If you use on the Precision Boost technology - AMD's standard boosting tech - then the situation you described isn't possible. The boost algorithm will automatically reduce the operating frequency as more cores become active. Even if those cores are in different CCDs at opposite sides of the CPU. In theory you could switch to "OC Mode" which disables this boosting tech. Then you could overclock your best CCX for the best frequency and keep the others at low voltage for all core loads. Then you could have one core boost really high for your ST workloads while at the same time have the others take care of the MT workloads. It's no guarantee that the OS will automatically assign the process to the right cores though. So you might need to use Process Lasso too.
