@@UnboxWarehouse The water would have worked for you if it had tubes running thru it. So the cold air being drawn out of the tubes (metal is best) has been cooled down by the water that surrounds it. I made one of these about seven years ago and with tubes ran thru iced down cold water it worked much better.

Yall complaining that that water is warmer but the biggest reason is cause the air was traveling through the spaces in between the ice which is why it cooled down to begin with. By adding water you not only increased the temp in the cooler but decreased the surface area of the ice meaning it can't cool air as effectively

We were tent camping in florida in july and the first night in the tent it didnt cool off enough to sleep until about 5:00 am and that was with a big box fan and soaking my hair, clothes, and sheets with ice water from the cooler. Then at about 7:00 am when the sun hit the top of the tent it was instantly like an oven again. I had to sleep the second night because i had an 18 hr drive the next day and i knew how water coolers worked so i was trying to figure out what i could do to make a mini water cooler. I googled it and saw where people were using 5 gal buckets and filling them with ice then putting a fan in the lid and drilling holes for pvc pipes to come out the sides. Perfect except i had no power tools! All i had was my pocket knife. This was yrs ago before making these things was super popular and there were tons of youtube videos about it by the way. The only videos were with the buckets. I went and got a small $2 styrofoam icechest, 2-2" pvc elbows, a small 10" box fan, and some duct tape! I cut the lid and taped the fan in place and cut holes for the elbows at the other end and filled it with a 10lb bag of ice and stuck it in the tent. I slept 9 hrs like a baby! Cost me less than $20 and the biggest chunk of that was the small fan because i didnt already have one. I call it my redneck tent A/C! I just cant see paying $200 for these fancy coolers when you can make your own for 1/10th of that price! Edit: I forgot to mention that im a girl! 😂

Not sure why you would have thought that it would become COOLER by adding water. Water is warmer than ice......because it's melted......lol. Anyway, I was actually pretty impressed with it. You said it yourself, that it was an extreme test. It was well over 100 degrees outside......you ran it for about ten minutes out there, then, you ran it for about 15 or 20 minutes inside a 145 degree car, and it actually COOLED it off!! The only thing that was a fail, was you adding water. If you filled that cooler all the way up with ice, and let's say, had it in an RV or room in a house, that was about 85-90 degrees inside, I'm willing to bet that it would cool the whole room off quite nicely. If you ran it at night in an RV or house, it would probably cool the room, or RV to a comfortable level pretty much all night long. I'll bet you could get the ice to last even longer inside by adding a thin reflective layer of insulation around the inside of the cooler. I don't know.......I don't think the cooler is gimmicky, or a fail....people make these kinds of things for tailgating etc, and most of those only last about ten minutes before they're blowing warm air. Seems like a pretty decent product actually. I was absolutely amazed it was actually able to cool the car off by almost 50 degrees, on a super hot day sitting directly in the sun......pretty awesome actually!

When I saw him do that I asked myself, "Did Ryobi say you should add a gallon of water?" If so then perhaps they should rethink their instructions. They shouldn't tell people to add water unless there's also room for tubing to be added. So imagine my shock when he gave the unit a bad review because of it! It seemed to be working fine before he added the water. It's the kind of criticism I hate to give because overall it was a great video.

I know this is an old video, but things people need to keep in mind when it comes to how long your ice will last. In this video I will assume those cokes were not already cold so those are taking energy from the ice to cool those down (which is melting the ice faster). That water that was added was probably not cold so thats more energy of the ice wasted into cooling the water. So of course the air temp coming out got hotter when the water was added because the water was probably the same temp as the air temperature so. Did you really expect to add warm water to the cooler and not have the air temp coming out go up for a bit until that water was brought down to temp? This is all common sense stuff. Always leaving the ice in the bag would have kept the ice longer as well because there is way more surface area to cause the ice chips to melt when they are removed from the bag.

They just need to think of a way to put something as thick and heavy as a refrigerator grate in the bottom or side of an already fairly heavy cooler without making the unit too heavy for an average person to carry. And it has to run on a portable power source small enough to fit into the cooler, which will likely add even more weight to each unit. Then there's the food...

Just saw this. There were a few things that I think would have made a difference. First of all, it would have made a differene if you'd added more ice, at least another 20# bag or, preferably, a block of ice. Between putting (presumably) all those warm sodas, then warm water, the ice simply melted and it got warmer. I would have liked to see what would have happened had you put more ice and maybe cold containers in, especially the water.

My friend that is simple physics. The water is a better heat conductor than air, for that reason when you put water with ice in a cooler the cans become cooler faster, but a the same time the ice melt sooner. On the other hand for that fan to supply some cool air it need space for the air flow between the ice, 1. The water blocked that space and 2. the water is "hot" so you loose your ice thermal storage

I'd love to know how that affected the humidity inside the car, I'm betting that adding the water to the cooler made it more of a swamp cooler (which work by evaporative cooling but the byproduct is high humidity in a closed environment) and actually would make it "feel" warmer in addition to reducing the cooling effect. When you opened the door you let in the less humid air which "feels" cooler in that situation. Cool experiment!

To replace an air conditioner with a capacity of 5000 BTUs, it is necessary to melt 36lb of ice per hour. Your car Air Conditioning is about 5 Tons (60,000 BTU) at highway speeds. It is about 30,000 BTU if you drive in City. So, if you on the highway, be ready to spent 432lb of ice each hour and 216lb of ice if you drive in City. But it will work well in the small tent :)

Well, you will get warmer air from water than ice. Ice is below freezing (ie. a solid) and water is above freezing (a liquid) so you will expect to get warmer temps when you add water versus ice. Not sure why a mixture results in even higher temps but the ice vs water temps is normal. I mean try putting a can of soda in a cooler with ice and then in another with just water. The ice cooler will likely be colder.

I agree, when u dumped the hot water in you probably melted most of the ice. I would have gotten a reading inside the cooler with just ice and when you added the water, this would also tell u how effective it actually is. If it was 50 degrees inside the chest and the air at the vent is 70, then it’s a design flaw. But thanks didn’t even know ryobi had this and I own many of their tools

Putting moisture in the air help heat up the space. Leave the water out of the cooler and it will work better. A/C units remove moisture from the air. That is how they cool.

+Hack World they make condenser models that work great. Something like this. It has a radiator and pumps the cold water through a coil. Much better. m.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pspages/icebox-sb-pilot.php

Look up the DIY ones that run air tubing throughout the ice area zigzagged and use 12v blower to move air: longer contact with cold surface before exiting provides colder air. Easy $50 DIY with better results...

Yes I have one of these that has a radiator built into the lid. It pumps cold water from the cooler through the radiator and blows a fan across the coil. This is what I was used to using and that's why I put water in it. But it obviously operates on a completely different principle than this one.

water + ice is an exothermic reaction, isn't it? (that means puts off heat) Or it is about the surface contact as the other commenter said. Thanks for checking it out in AZ

I have a vacuum that blows too. Wet and dry vacuum I make some ice with some empty containers like 1 gallon milk container. When is ready I just remove the milk container hit with a hammer. Put the ice on my vacuum set vacuum to blow air. I don’t need to buy some fancy stuff or or make some weird cooler. I used my vacuum when I need I need cold air put ice inside set it to blow. I don’t destroy coolers and I don’t spent money.

Funny video but dude...where did you learn your cooler skills from? First the beverage on the bottom, then big chunks of ice on top, then fill in the gaps with crushed. If you can find packets of dry ice then you are getting serious. If you're desperate for quick cold throw a little salt in there. Melts but the water is about 32F.

😂😂😂 he added water and transferred energy “Heat” from the ice therefore the temperature inside the cooler was raised. Instead of transferring heat from inside then car he transferred it from the ice to the water.

@@UnboxWarehouse You keep saying that as if it matters. Dont you understand that you increased the temperature in the cooler by doing so?? Adding water does not lower the temperature of a cooler, therefore why would you expect the air coming out of it to get cooler?? You now also have a lower surface temp and less surface area to cool the air. You should've just left the ice alone instead of rapidly melting it. This is elementary school stuff man, not rocket science.
