I think that would have been a handy thing to keep. Regardless, had a good first mowing! It cuts the grass evenly, it’s fairly quiet and I mowed my whole yard on a single battery charge!

    Thanks, Norm. I just bought a new Ryobi and it has one major difference from the one you show. There is a safety mechanism to sense whether a mulching plug or bagging attachment is installed and the motor will not run if neither is. To implement this, the mulching plug and bagging attachment each have a metal hoop that snaps into a slot on top of the mower body at the back. The problem I am having is that the two notches in my mulching plug don't align with the two tabs on the back of the mower body and I can't get the mulching plug to "lock" in. The hoop does not keep seated in the slot and works its way out and the motor cuts out after mowing for just a few minutes. I can press the mulching plug back down into the slot (it moves by less than 1mm) and the mower will restart, but then it works its way out after a few minutes again. I don't have this problem with the bagging attachement since it does not interact with those two tabs on the back of the mower body.

  • @normscorner6047

    @normscorner6047

    3 жыл бұрын

    When you put the plug into the rear discharge opening are you locking it into the notch on the bottom? If its not locked into it that might make it loose enough to move out of place and make it stop. The plug has the piece with a lip that has to slide to the left in order to hold in place. Thats on the new style 20" version. The 21" version, the plug just sits in a slot and you would push down the lever to lock it in place. Other factors to think about is if the grass your cutting is high and your mower is on a low height setting and thus more grass is pushing up against the plug. Try setting the height up maybe 1 or 2 notches just to see if the problem goes away. Let me know what happens and thank you again for watching my channel

    Hi Kristin, Thank you for watching my video. I've noticed that there have been several people on here with the same problem. I can trouble shoot with you. Forgive me on some of the questions I ask. Battery is fully charged? Battery is completely pushed and connected? The red key which is the safety key is in and completely connected? If you had your mower stored for the winter did you have it in an area that would keep mice or rodents from getting at it? The red button is at the bottom of the handle but it's attached to the mower. When the handle in that area is locked in place it should be pressing that button down. The 2 clip handles at the bottom also need to be turned and locked in place. Half way up the 2 gray plastic clips also need to be completely snapped in place. The mower I have in my video is the same one I have today and I have not had any problems like this. Getting back to the mice issue. If the area has this issue where it was stored, it's possible that mice may have chewed on the wires. If that is not the issue then I would contact ryobi as these mowers come with either a 3 or 5 year warranty.

    Hi Hugh, I would recommend not going less than 2" in height for both grass types. Here in idaho I keep mind lawn up to 3" because our rainy season is in the spring and with dry hot weather in the summer you need to shade your lawn. In Florida your getting rain more often and thus 2" will work for you. If these grasses are in separate areas then I might want to go 3" on the St. Augustine. I hope this helps. • @normscorner6047

    @normscorner6047

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm going to go through some steps. I apologize if some are pretty obvious. First remove the battery . Next make sure there is nothing blocking the blade from turning. If the lights and the self propel works then it's not the battery. But just to make sure do you have another battery that you could plug in just to see if you get the same results. If you don't have an extra one, don't go buying another. Did you buy this brand new? If yes you need to register the mower on ryobi's website so you have a record for warranty. Getting back to the blade. If new from the box they set the mower to the lowest setting. Move it up about half way just incase it to low. Make sure the red key is sitting in properly. To get the blades to move you need to pull the metal bail towards the handle first, then push the start button. There are sensors on the mower that if the mower is at a awkward angle it might not start for safety reasons. Lastly the mower will not start unless you have either the grass catcher or mulcher attached to the back. Let me know if any of them work for you

    I have the latest model 20" 40v. and it came with the mulching plug already installed (to save space, as you say) and locked in place. The thing is I cannot figure out how the lock is supposed to be disengaged from its current position. I have tried lifting and pulling to no effect other than frustration. Is there some other catch I am missing?

  • @normscorner6047

    @normscorner6047

    The mulcher should have a handle extended outward and a metal bar above that holds up against the mower. You should only have to lift with the handle upwards and that should unlock it from discharge area. Depending on how tight fit it is you may need to nudge it a bit to loosen it up. Thanks for watching my video.

    I don't believe the 20" version bar moves like it does in the 21" version. The mower isn't in my opinion having a strong enough force that it would knock the plug off. Maybe if it hits or picks up a hard object that was left in the grass

    Hi William, There could be a number of things that could be causing this issue. Depending on the model you have. Is the handle fully pulled up and locked in place? Like on mine, there is a red sensor that will get pushed in when the handle swings up in position. Staying on red. Is the red key loose? If the key is not fully ingauged, this can prevent it from starting or stalling if it's loose. If you have a cable that runs along the handle. Make sure it's not pinched somewhere when you lock the handle in place. Have you changed out the blade? Make sure it's installed correctly and you have the right blade in there. If the blade gets caught on something, it might stall the mower. Lastly is the battery. Is the battery fully pressed and locked in place. You'll be surprised how much dust can build up in there. I always blow out the inside after I remove the battery. Do you have any other equipment or tools that use the same 40v battery? Just want to make sure it isn't a battery issue. I have yet to have a battery wear out on me. If by chance it is the battery or if you don't have another tool to check it. Take the battery to home depot and see if they could install it on one of their display models. If the same thing happens then it's the battery. If you replace the battery Make sure to get the same battery height. A lot of the new mowers now come with larger in height batteries. Like my mower in the video will not take the larger ones. I explain that in my other mower video. I hope this helps you. Thank you for watching my video. Norman

  • @normscorner6047

    @normscorner6047

    Mulching is where the blades cut the grass but the grass drops back onto the ground. In the case of my mower in this video it requires the plug to be installed and then your good to go with no bag. But the newer models may not come with the mulcher in which case you have to order that separately. My guess is that mulching is not the most popular method and thus they removed it from the box. Thats just my opinion. My mulcher piece is sitting in the same place I left it after this video. LOL

  • @normscorner6047

    3 жыл бұрын

    If you fully charged the battery and only used enough to go down one bar then you would be ok to not charge it until it drains down to one bar. Where this could back fire on you is if you were to mow your backyard and it need 4 bars to complete both yards. At the end of your mowing season charge up your battery and then if you kept the box it came in, just store it in a cool and dry place until your ready next season.

    Hi Kimberly, I'm not into mulching my lawn, but because there are those who do, then it's better for Ryobi to have that option available. The reason for mulching is that it allows the mower to recurculate the grass clipping back into your lawn and it's suppose to help with your lawn and soil. Mulching in my opinion is better when your keeping your lawn cut short. This way the grass clipping sink into your lawn better. The higher the grass clipping the more your lawn looks like your harvesting hay. Thanks for watching my video Norman

  • @normscorner6047

    @normscorner6047

    The battery is ready when the green light stops blinking. They don't need 12 hours to charge up. Couple things you can do. Take the battery off the charger. If you have the battery with the button to push to see how much power you have, then see if it shows it is fully charged. The other could be that the battery is not completely pushed into the charger. Sometimes you may miss the connection and you just need to take the battery off the charger and then just push it back in again and the green light will start blinking. Hope this helps. If it doesn't it could be a defective charger or battery.
