Rylanor, known as Ancient Rylanor and Rylanor the Unyielding, was a Venerable Dreadnought and hero of the Emperor's Children Legion during the Great Crusade.
He served as the IIIrd Legion's "Ancient of Rites," and had been mortally wounded battling the Aeldari in the late 30th Millennium, solar decades before the outbreak of the Horus Heresy. Following his wounding, Rylanor was interred within the adamantium shell of a Contemptor Pattern Dreadnought. Betrayed unto his own death by the duplicitous actions of the Warmaster Horus, Rylanor rallied the surviving Loyalist Emperor's Children and fought against the Traitors during the Battle of Isstvan III.
He would survive the battle, and spent the next ten thousand Terran years planning to gain vengeance upon the man he truly blamed for the great betrayal - his own Primarch, Fulgrim.

@@pantenejesus9398 You say 'at the time' as if he was only able to sense him while he wasn't on the throne. I'm curious as whether that's true, because if so I doubt big E ever had the chance to look for him. There was kinda a heresy going on that would've distracted him from checking Istvan III for survivors. If not and big E was able to check after being placed on the throne, I suppose it could be possible, but I guess it comes down to whether Rylanor's lure was detectable to psykers outside the warp (which it probably was, but idk for sure).
@ladywaffle2210

**waltzes on in with exaggerated swagger** WELL, THAT MAKES EVERYTHING MUCH MORE INTERESTING! Here's why. It isn't hard to parallel their situations to exaggerated extremes. Rylanor is Big E, crippled but still fighting despite agony. Fulgrim, therefore, is the Chaos Gods--more powerful, but egoistical, incapable of finishing the job without gloating. Fulgrim wanted to win his way, like how the Chaos Gods want to win their way. This is paralleled by Fulgrim's inability to understand just how fucking much Rylanor HATED him, how Rylanor refused Slaanesh's power so totally. Chaos cannot understand the Emperor; they know Him as Anathema, because Big E is essentially Order personified. Therefore, we can infer that Fulgrim didn't understand Rylanor's resistance on *any* level. This does make a degree of sense, too; "consent" is a foreign concept to Slaanesh. This also explains something critical. The Thousand Sons represent that which gives Chaos power--in particular, they represent Humanity. (Very on the nose metaphor, too. I mean. come on. "Thousand Sons". Younger than but carved from nearly the same clay as Rylanor. Of course they're a stand-in for Humanity.) Through their sacrifice, the Emperor will be able to not permanently defeat Chaos, but expel it so that it's no longer a threat. Chaos will still linger--after all, Fulgrim died in the blast, but Daemon Princes don't stay dead--but it will be greatly weakened by the Emperor's sacrifice. I could go on, too, but I'm kinda tired.

Rylanor’s speech dealt more damage to Fulgrim than the virus bomb. Truly a legend.
I think one of the aspects which caused the severe disgust of the thousand sons towards fulgrim was the way he treated his son. I've heard it said that the damage dealt to Fulgrim's ego by Rylanor's rejection weakened him enough to keep him from manifesting in the Materium for millennia since. After all, since Fulgrim is a daemon prince now, his ego is his existence. Fulgrim in particular is fed by his self-perception as perfect, so an absolute failure that he can't explain away or blame on anyone else is a real wound to that self-perception. It gnaws at Fulgrim that he failed; that he couldn't seduce or dominate one of his own gene-sons, and that his charisma failed so spectacularly that even another Chaos worshipper chose to side with Rylanor over him. Optimistically, the seed of self-doubt planted by this encounter may be what unravels Fulgrim entirely in the end.

Well we are in end 41k barely reaching 42k so "millenia ever since" works only to an extand since the event was in the midst of 40k Its more likely that Fulgrim's might (who mind you in 1vs1 as Daemon Primarch was the strongest at this point since with Lorgar he is the only one to become actually stronger by escending) however has been crippled, which brings him back from nigh invincible to potentially killable. It might be why he never returned since then. Fulgrim is a being of Chaos. Hurting his ego might hurt him for real. 😂
Some cool details about the story: -the Thousand Sons almost detected Fulgrim in the beginning of the story, but his presence "slithered" away from their mind -there's a prophecy about something sundered (i.e. shattered) being renewed (Magnus' soul?) -Rylanor got the jump on three sorcerers, one of which could see the future -Rylanor had basically gone insane and forgot everything, even his name: the only thing he didn't forget was his hatred towards Fulgrim - and he kept what was left of his sanity exclusively focusing on this hatred for thousands of years. As he talks, he gradually remembers how to speak, who he was, who are the Thousand Sons, and what happened. His purpose used to be remembering the history of his legion. Fulgrim even remarks that many glories went unearned because noone was there to remember them. -Murshid can sense people's emotions, and he could sense Fulgrim's infinite malice and pride. But Rylanor's honor and greateness was more intense than a Slaanesh daemon primarch's pride. -Even Vistario felt the weight of Fulgrim's aura, but Rylanor's spite made him completely immune to his own primarch influence -The Thousand Sons were doomed from the start. They couldn't hold the virus bomb forever, and maybe Fulgrim would kill them anyways

Rylanor was a son of Fulgrim. And one of the most famous and reverred. He was powerful and espected. Fulgrim didn't try to kill him, he wanted to subdue him. To corrupt him. Because FUlgrim is quite the charmer, and that's part of his pride : nobody can resist him. The fact that he was rejected by one of his sons, and a venerable one, was a big hit. The fact that the Thousand Sons looked at him and were disgusted, while Rylanor reminded them what they used to stand for, put the final nail in the coffin. Fulgrim came out alive, but he's been rejected despite his perfect charisma, rejected by one of his own sons, rejected by a fellow traitor legion, and all of them rather died than give him a victory. It would be aweful if you were just a normal person, it's a wound that will never heal for someone as proud and egotistical than Fulgrim. He wasn't just denied of a victory. He was denied and rejected by and of everything. Spite and scorn.

I watch the Dreadnought lash out in wrath His blows deflected away from their path Despite the years he has endured It's clear that he will live and he will die by the sword Fulgrim then returned a strike His sword slitting through bravado and machine alike His face a mix of contempt and glee The eyes of one who can feed off misery! I think a part of the reason why Rylanor and "The Ancient Awates" story is popular is because it's a cool concept on a meta level. The last stand of the Loyalists at Istvan III is one of those really interesting incidents that tends to get over shadowed both in lore and in GW's coverage by much more famous events such as the Istvan V Dropsite Massacre, the Burning of Prospero, and the Siege of Terra. But that kind of adds to the tragedy. These "culled loyalists" sold their lives dearly to the bitter end in a battle they knew they could not win but one that they would fight anyway both to buy time for the Emperor to act and to make these backstabbing sons of bitches pay for what they've done. And what is their reward? To being relegated as a forgotten footnote in history Thus why "The Ancient Awates" is so cool as a concept. It's about the Ancient of Rites, "he who remembers," waiting as silent testament for all those who were betrayed and fell at Istvan III. A forgotten soldier on a forgotten planet who is the last vestige of a forgotten past. The fact that we got a story that not only reminds us that Istvan III occurred but also acts as one final closing chapter. It transforms the events of Istvan III from just the opening act to the Horus Heresy to its own story, an almost epic and tragic saga that reaches its final conclusion withy Rylanor's death. And while the rest of the galaxy will forget this ever happened, we as the reader will remember

That they knew that something was following them as they searched for the distress beacon. Fulgrim followed them so he could steal whatever Magnus was looking for and made fun of Magnus. Saying that he was pathetic to still be obsessed with the past. Vistario did not betray his Raptora brother. Akhtar says they were not traitors but betrayed by the Wolves. Marshad thought it better they had died defending Prospero. They would have died anyways but it was the only way to stop Fulgrim. The story is not just about Raylanor but about the Thousand sons and Magnus and Fulgrim. Traitors and Loyalists. Honor and Pride. Each a foil to accentuate the other.

In my headcannon, in one of the battles they appear in, some random guardsman's life is saved by a Horus heresy age venerable dreadnought when the legion of the damned appear, and through the shadow and the flame that makes up its form he can just barely make out the slightest tinge of purple steel.
The events of Rylanor's story might not have an actual material effect on the world, but it left a permanent scar on Fulgrim's pride. Not just the fact that Fulgrim lost that battle nor that he was denied the prize of defiling the body of Rylanor. But the fact that in the past Fulgrim was the only primarch that took over his entire homeplanet without any conflict, the emperor himself was so impressed that his legion was named the emperor's children and the only legion to bear the imperial Aquila. Where Fulgrim went people respected, loved and looked up to him (like a high charisma build character). Now however he has fallen so far that even other traitor space marine will turn loyalist again and die as loyalists rather than to follow Fulgrim while having far more respect for Rylanor is a big awakening. The Primearch who charmed an entire planet and the Emperor himself couldn't even get the allegiance of a small handful of marines that had already fallen to chaos. Fulgrim might just realize he is no longer perfect.

It's probably why Fulgrim is having as much trouble as he is even manifesting now.
Fulgrim does tell him Rylanor that it has been millenia, but nowhere in the short story says that he waited 10k years. Also Rylanor was one of the 200 dudes the EC had left before they found Fulgrim, being the Anciet of Rites he basically knew all EC by name and all of their glories and accomplishments, he helped Fulgrim bring the EC into a fightning strength and saw all of the betrayal happen right in front of him. Another badass detail, is that Fulgrim wanted a grand speach from Rylanor to proclaim his vengeance, like all other EC would do, but Rylanor just torned over to reveal the bomb and without even giving Fulgrim the satisfaction, detonated it.

For a brief moment, a star shone on Istvaan...
Glad to see the Chad of Rites getting his due. Damn it, I need to go listen to Rylanor's Last Stand for the 500th time.
My headcannon sequel: Fulgrim slithered through the hole where the fortress’s gates had once stood before his sons had annihilated them in a display of perfect siege-craft that even Perturabo could not best. His sons flowed through the opening behind him, spreading out in a protective fan. Fulgrim drew up short, heedless of the weapons fire coming from the rear of the chamber, and gestured impatiently for his children to clear his path of the corpses that littered the space. He made a mental note to seek out and punish the marines who had engineered the blast. They had promised him a clear floor for his entrance. The smouldering heap of ruined armour and flesh nearest to Fulgrim’s blessed coils bore golden plate, and as one of his sons dragged it aside, the distinct crested helm of a Custodian rolled free. That alone was proof enough that Fulgrim’s intelligence had been correct. This fortress was where his sanctimonious brother had withdrawn to lick his wounds after halting Angron’s foolhardy rush. The gunfire became muffled as the defenders were pushed back down the halls of the Imperial stronghold. Fulgrim let them go. These lesser beings - Guardsmen and Space Marines - were beneath him; his sons would clear the path, and then the final kill, the only kill that truly mattered, would be his. The distant thunder of bolter fire, the shriek of sonic weapons, the thumps of explosives, and the screams of the dying all blended in the grand symphony of war, becoming a cacophonous hymn to the Dark Prince. After some time, Fulgrim moved to that beat, gliding forward sedately through the main halls, down the path his sons had carved for him. Though his children had faithfully cleared the way of corpses as they went, he could read the flow of battle in the pattern of bloodstains on the walls and floor. Where Fulgrim’s sons had killed loyalist pigs, the blood was sprayed artistically, making bold yet subtle masterpieces, and he could often identify the handiwork of individual champions by their blade-strokes. Where his brother’s lapdogs had managed to down one of the Prince’s chosen, the splatter of dark Astartes blood was crude, artless, uninspired. Ahead, Fulgrim heard the roar of heavy weapons and the cries of his sons dying in large numbers. The stench of burning sulfur assaulted his nostrils. As he turned the corner into a large and ornate antechamber, he saw the last of his legionnaires on this path, an aspiring champion wielding a plasma pistol and an elegant power scimitar cast aside like a broken toy by the room’s sole defender. The towering guardian flickered in Fulgrim’s warp-sight, seeming to be two figures occupying the same space. One figure was a Contemptor Dreadnought armed with an assault cannon and a massive power fist, it’s carapace dented and cracked but still unbroken, faint hints of familiar purple livery just barely showing through layers of charred battle damage. The second was a proud champion of the Third Legion, the Emperor’s Children, resplendent in purple battle-plate inset with intricate patterns of gold, his sturdy power sword and white-painted storm bolter each inscribed with more restrained golden scrollwork. The marine’s hair was also purest white and hung loose to below his shoulders, where it seemed to merge with his cape of the same colour. That hair framed a face Fulgrim knew well, though he had not looked upon it in over ten thousand years. He had seen the dreadnought more recently, though it made this reunion no more comfortable. The sight of that hulking mechanical form reminded him of failure, rejection, and lost opportunity that hurt more than any mere blade ever had. The Ancient of Rites’ eyes, both human and machine, flashed with recognition of the daemon Primarch, alight with hatred as vast and as cold as the void between the stars. “Rylanor,” Fulgrim breathed, barely audible even to his enhanced ears. “TRAITOR.” The reply came out as the grating mechanical vox-cry of a dreadnought but echoed back from the walls as a deep, resonant human voice, thick with contempt as if for some disgusting slimy thing that had crawled into the house and left a trail of filth over the carpet. That voice cut into Fulgrim as the marine turned to face him, raising his storm bolter, the dreadnought’s assault cannon spinning up in time with the motion. It dug into the Primarch’s mind, and for a moment he was not the greatest and most perfect champion the Dark Prince had ever raised up. He was the thing that had tracked slime across the floor. He was a failure. In an instant, Fulgrim saw every choice he had made to get where he was and how he might have chosen differently. He imagined what he could have become instead and wanted to weep for its loss. “Mene, Mene, Tekel.” The ancient words of a long-dead Terran prophet echoed in his mind. His life was weighed before him and found wanting. Pain brought Fulgrim back to the moment with a jolt. Pain not so deep as the shame the voice had inspired, but more immediate. Rylanor had fired on him. The shots, whether from cannon, bolter, both, or neither, had left glittering trails of golden light in their wakes. Where they tore into Fulgrim’s side, they burnt him as no common bullets ever could, ablaze with the hateful light of the Anathema, boiling the warp-stuff that suffused his being as surely as they boiled his physical blood. Fulgrim’s lower right arm was torn free and went spinning away, burning with golden fire from one of the shots, a whip blessed six times by each of the six most perfect Keepers of Secrets still clutched in its hand. Fulgrim had no time to mourn the loss, as Rylanor had nearly crossed the space between them. His melee weapon was driving toward his gene-father’s abdomen in a low disembowelling thrust, faster than either a dreadnought or an Astartes champion should have been able to deliver it. Fulgrim only just managed to avoid the strike by twisting his snake’s body in a sidestep and simultaneously parrying what seemed both a shining sword and a charred power fist with the long ritual dagger in his remaining lower arm. “You’re dead!” he howled as weapons clashed a second time. “You are DEAD! I was there!” “EVEN IN DEATH, I STILL SERVE.” The reply was full of accusation as well as contempt. Even beyond the bounds of life and death, the son served faithfully, while the father’s loyalty had not reached even a fraction as far. The voice tore again at Fulgrim’s mind, though this time he had hardened himself to it, and it only sent a minute shiver of agonizing shame through his body. The words were accompanied by a vicious downward strike toward Fulgrim’s head, one which - even with all the speed Slaanesh had gifted him - the daemon Primarch was barely able to catch on the crossed blades of the swords in his upper hands. Variegated sparks rained down from where unhallowed silver met weapons flickering with the fire of the Anathema. An offensive strike with his dagger struck more sparks from his opponent’s chest armour, though it could have carved mere ceramite as effortlessly as it sliced flesh. Fulgrim looked upon Rylanor, Venerable of the Palatine Host, Ancient of Rites, Child of the Emperor, and wondered whether the unfamiliar cold sensation twisting his guts was what mortal men called “fear.”

The way I see the stories ending, is the chaos marine was so profoundly effected by Rylanor's absolute, wholesome pride and honour that it temporarily snapped the chaos marine's mind out of it's corruption, so for a small moment he saw things with absolute clarity untainted by the warp, so when he looked at Fulgrim, he saw him for what he actually was with the full clarity of a mind untainted by chaos - and in that moment of clarity and freedom, chose to end it. Which is huge! This chaos space marine turned traitor against chaos!
The way it's told it sounds to me that the Thousand Son that wounded his pride. Fulgrim seemed ok to just torture Rylanor after his rejection, but it was the Thousand Son cucking him out of the kill that actually affected him.

If there's ever a second Siege of Terra, I want to see Fulgrim slithering around, talking smack and preparing for a charge when at the most desperate point for the defenders blinding warp rifts open up and the Damned Legionnaries arrive, among them a shining purple Contemptor Dreadnought, warhorn blasting, rallying the loyalists, white warp flames in the shape of phoenix wings bellowing forth from the Dreadnought's exhausts, covering and protecting the advancing troops behind the charging warrior. And the Ancient of Rites once again challenges the Snake. Bonus Points if there's three Thousand Son sorcerers besides the Dreadnought, slinging spells and firing their bolters, deemed worthy again

Rylanor waited ten thousand years just to say "Fuck you dad."
Honestly the thousand sons sorcerer should've known Rylanor was alive because of the gigachad music playing in the background
So Bricky glossed over a few things. 1. When Rylanor woke up, one of the Thousand Sons was so shocked by the sudden assault of pure hatred on his mind due to psychic sensitivity, ONE OF HIS FUCKING HEARTS EXPLODED. Rylanor was so unbelievably pissed it caused a Space Marine who has been alive for over 10,000 years to have a heart attack so violent that one of his two hearts was outright destroyed. 2. The Thousand Son who was containing the explosion was essentially using all of his power to freeze it in time, and this also required Vistario's helping him with his own psychic power in order to keep the stasis field stable so all this could happen. 3. The Life Eater Virus is named such for a very specific reason; it dissolves virtually all organic matter it comes into contact with, including rubber. This means it compromises the power armor's environmental seals and opens up the Marine's fleshy insides to the virus. This is mitigated somewhat by the Dreadnought sarcophagus, but it would probably still be compromised to the point where the pilot would suffocate or his life support systems would lose power. The initial explosion of a virus bomb is considerable, but it is mainly intended to scatter the virus along the blast wave, which is where Stage 2 kicks in. The dissolved biomatter and organic compounds releases large amounts of gases, and because of how the virus dissolves the rubber coating off wires, it can very quickly cause a massive gas explosion, or the fire and heat caused by the original explosion or a second virus bomb can set it off instead. This is why Exterminatus carried out by using bombs loaded with the Life Eater virus usually result in massive firestorms, as the entire biosphere of a planet is systematically turned into flammable gas and then ignited.

26:50 This! This is exactly how I saw this scene, especially with Vistario's description of his final moments and death. I feel it's not a betrayal back to the Loyalist side as much as it's a recognition of the fall of Fulgrim and the core humanity still standing in Rylanor.
9:50 yes it can. Happens to a Death Guard dreadnaught in Flight of the Eisenstein. Can’t remember the name of the dreadnaught. But his armour had a crack in it and the virus got in through that. He then takes a captain and blows him and himself up to go out on their terms. RIP
Bricky at the end: Detonate the Explosives! Give us a good death!
Five-head bricky inspecting the Luna Wolves poster is the funniest shit I've seen this week. Thank you.
WOOOHOOOOO *rylanor's last stand started playing* finally we got rylanor episode
Rylanor: Hey, Fulgrim? Fulgrim: ? Rylanor: *pulls out Virus Bomb* B*tch
I hope sons of the Phoenix get confirmed as Fulgrims boys the children deserved better

There is a pretty good webcomic series on these guys where the Fulgrim clone is released and he has the Sons of the Phoenix revealed as loyalist EC (along with a successor chapter of the ravenguard)
Rylanor: Gets jumped at Istvann 3 by an untold numbers of heretics and traitor marines, considered MIA. A few millennium later: What’s up bitches! I lived!
