Its so hard for the musicians to hear at these large gigs where it does get messy because most of the musicians can barely hear what they playing. So i won't throw any blame at the musicians.

Drummers are doing way too much during shout music. This is why keyboard players keep adding a drum track during shout when they have a drummer. These drummers need to play straight. You can get busy, but first establish the pocket. Go listen to the Godfather of modern Gospel drumming, Jeff Davis.

I was the drummer in the video and as you see in the video I play what I’m told and if they say open up then that’s what we give the MD. You also have to know how to give both chops and Play straight

⁠@@loaces2k6… and if I may add, I think we have to bear in mind that people have the right to their opinion. After 40+ years in music ministry, and being raised in the Church of God in Christ (Newport News VA…St. John COGIC), as a drummer, but now an ordained Elder in the Lord’s church and a minister of music, I recognize that Music has evolved and what’s tolerated now was not tolerated when I was a drummer… I can’t evaluate that person because I don’t know that person, but I know mine, and I was under a HEAVY MANTLE; for MY predecessors it is too much, for this dispensation it’s fine, at my church they already know pocket pays… My drummer doesn’t have the liberty that Ryan has. I’m not having it, but most of all my Bishop’s not having it, and his son is the drummer. I guess that’s the drawback of having a musical Bishop with an OCD!🤦🏽‍♂️…he sets the tone so that’s how he wants it, so that’s what we give him! It’s all good though, let him be great. We don’t all have the same taste, and we don’t have to be insulting, or micro aggressive because we don’t agree with their view… Be blessed and keep serving The Lord with gladness! Peace..✌🏾

@@jaygoprod5549 The initial comment tone was shaming drummers, like Ryan was doing something wrong. Ryan clearly said the MD told him to open up, air out, go in … whatever you want to call it. Ryan was simply following instructions, nobody is being micro aggressive, he gave his opinion, I gave mines. That’s why I said “to each it’s own”. It’s not about the musician, it’s what the md, pastor, artist calls for. That’s why I said musicians be quick to criticize cause they know can’t perform as such when called upon. Even playing for a secular worldly artist, playing in the pocket and doing what song calls for might keep you on the gig, but your not going to be considered for the gig if you can’t open up with fills and chops at the end of show when the artist says “give the drummer some”.
