Ryan's P51 D Janie Maiden

Ғылым және технология

Taking a full year to scratch build from Ziroli plans, this 1/4.6 scale P-51D Mustang had its first flight attempt in April of 2024. Unfortunately it suffered a prop strike during initial takeoff, and the next attempt at her maiden was delayed until June 13th of the same year. Returning to RAMS field in East Bend, NC, pilot Ryan once again suffered a prop strike on take off, but this time he had several spares on hand. Fortunately, only one more replacement was needed, but there were still plenty of thrills involved in getting airborne!

I assure everyone, the plane is balanced! I have a muffler issue restricting max engine performance that i didn't understand until now. It will be fixed before flying again. The nosing over problem on takeoff is a wheel problem. My wheels are to soft. This will also be resolved. Aborting a takeoff is easier said than done if your not the one with your hands on the sticks. Maidens are maidens for a reason.

Do people not know how important balancing a plane is? I build big warbirds and spend hours sometimes getting the balance just right for the maiden. Also, for the maiden, the plane SHOULD be a little nose heavy. Avoid perfectly neutral cg based on manual. Tiny bit nose heavy. Strongly suggest Xicoy balancing pucks. For $350 the club should buy one for all to use. We put too much time and money into these beasts to have them fly poorly on a maiden.

So I'm guessing you didn't like the video? Don't be bashful now . . . mash that thumbs down button! I find it a really interesting study in human nature how some folks are eager to comment on outcomes after they witness a result. I believe that most of us can only dream about spending a year to scratch build a masterpiece and then have the guts to risk it all on seeing if it will actually fly. As for the true cause of the marginal success, I'm confident the issues will be sorted in the near future.

@@lehshoot A little context, as it's often lost in textual replies/comments. I don't "dislike" the video. And you presumably posted this video for some commentary? Well I'm glad the builder/pilot got away with it and genuinely hope that he gets the model sorted and enjoys many great flights with it. However as amateurs in a hobby we still have some responsibility for conducting things in a safe manner. That model weighs 44 lbs and is capable of a lot of destruction. Just being insured isn't enough to counteract the potential mayhem that it could cause. That flight "should" have been aborted the instant it turned left. With the distinct risk of being seen as a gatekeeper which I am not trying to be.... I've been flying rc models of all types for 45 years now. And I crashed and crashed as everyone does, and will do. At times people have "commented" on the mistakes I made that contributed either partly or fully to those crashes. Even at the time I was thankful for understanding what went wrong, and it pains me to see people making simple mistakes when they have invested so much into the model and the flight. So, to be clear I hope, perhaps people watching this video will learn something from it, rather than just obtain some gallows humour from watching someone struggling.

@@alexmcmeekin2658 Alex, thanks for your clarification. Unfortunately, you have indeed made an incorrect assumption. I do NOT create these videos to collect commentaries. My channel is NOT monetized, and the primary reason that I spend the time doing the work is for the benefit of our local RC club in Conover NC, of which the builder/owner/pilot of this model is a member. The videos I post help to keep our members informed on what's going on at the club and serve to document flights so that pilots can diagnose problems and also to provide entertainment locally. I get a kick out of it because I like R/C models and am an avid photographer and videographer. Monetization of a channel imposes a raft of requirements that I simply don't want to deal with, but I do allow comments in order to provide encouragement to our members. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all those comments were polite?
