    I live in Clearwater Florida where they do spring training and he had the biggest house on the beach , used to drive by it everyday for work. He sold it a few years ago but dude definitely won at life and put in the work to do so. Nothing but respect wish his career ended on a higher note but none the less electric to watch and that's coming from a rays fan who lost a world series to Philly.

    I'm a diehard phillies fan. He didn't get called up till he was 26 or 27 because we had Thome at 1B but he had an historic run averaging nearly 50 HR & 140 rbi for nearly 5 straight seasons where he also won Rookie of the year, then won MVP, HR Derby king, and is a major piece to their 08 World Series championship. I'm not saying he's a hall of famer but he sure as hell close. If he continued to put up those numbers for another 2 seasons, he'd be a no doubt HOF'er.

    Jim Thome was my childhood hero. Followed him over to Philadelphia. Was devastated when he was traded to CWS, but having lived only an hour from the Phils’ AAA site in Scranton, I got to watch Utley, Howard, Madson, Hamels, Ruiz, Chris Coste, Victorino, Nick Punto, Brett Meyers, and so forth. I grew attached to Utley, and while I still followed Thome in Chicago, the Phils remained my favorite team to this day.

    That torn achilles really hurt him. 2011 was the beginning of the end not just for Howard, but also the Phillies' core as well. Also didn't help that Ruben Amaro Jr. threw the bank at Howard after that injury knowing that he likely wouldn't be the same.

    Ryan Howard never had a shot in hell to make the Hall of Fame because he was blocked by Jim Thome for years in Philly. He didn't play a full MLB season until he was 26 years old. Unless he started juicing like Nelson Cruz, he simply didn't have enough time left in his prime to compile enough counting stats to make a HOF case.

    Kenny Williams, White Sox VP and GM at the time said that it was heartbreaking to tell Aaron Rowand he'd been traded. You're a BIG part of both the defense & offense that powered the White Sox to a World Series Championship. Big part of the clubhouse and LOVED by the fans for his reckless play in CF. Being a Sox fan, I was SHOCKED that Thomas & Williams bickering helped this trade happen. Thomas got picked up by Oakland and hit 35 bombs, but Thome ended up sticking around quite a while longer than Thomas who retired after the 08 season

  • @Asshat237

    The second they signed that deal it was obvious to anyone who understands projecting players 5-10 years in the future that at least the last two years of that deal Howard was extremely likely to be a bad player. Players who only have power as their one skill typically age very poorly. Howard was already 26 in 2006, his first full year when he hit 58 hrs. His only chance to avoid that was to get in amazing physical condition and lose weight and to try to keep his bat from slowing down (his bat speed was never fast) and his body from breaking down. He didn’t do that and his slow bat past the age of 30 was easy to take advantage of. If you made a mistake and left a pitch slower than 95 in one of his hot zones, though, he could still hit it 450 feet. It’s just that zone gets smaller and smaller as your bat gets slower and slower.

    Great video! I think the music choice is definitely better compared to your Hanley video, less repetitive. You could try adding in some chill, sinister music when talking about something bad like an Achilles tear, or some vaguely depressing music when talking about a decline. Your line delivery is getting better, keep working at it! The one criticism I have is some of the word choices are a bit awkward, I think you said digress at one point when you meant regress? Regardless, this video is a huge leap in quality from your Hanley one, so if you keep improving at this rate your videos are gonna be awesome in no time!

  • @marcjohn9404
    @marcjohn94043 жыл бұрын

    He was a great ballplayer, but for as powerful as he was he only went over 1.000 OPS once in his career whereas Pujols never has as much power as Howard did and regularly lived in the 1.000 range. This is because Howard, despite having the on-base tools you need for that - he usually had an OBP about 80-100 points higher than his batting average - when his average started to dip his OBP went down into the mid .300s which is still good but not excellent. MVPs usually have .400-450 OBP though. He was also a huge dude, being that big takes it's toll when you swing violently over and over again. I feel like he should have been better for a much longer time, but as someone already stated he has more or less achieved all you could want to achieve.

    Watching the video I can say they knew he was the future first basemen wayyyy before they traded Thome, I watched him in Double A a year before that rookie season and he was untradeable and a huge deal, I sat right behind the catcher that night at the Altoona Curve stadium and after his first at bat which still hasn't landed I now understood why they made such a big deal out of him, and he had been a big deal for at least a year, might have been baseballs top prospect, so it not like he came out of nowhere and forced to trade Thome, the writing was on the wall there lol. He didn't become a rookie til he was about 25 years old so he got a late start, but great player in his prime.

    9:26 Why are the Phillies coaches getting paid? I remember after watching Ryan Howard’s first at bat saying to myself they’re not going to give him any fastballs. Then after his second at bat I said he’s definitely it getting any fastballs. They failed Ryan Howard that World Series. I wish I was on the team to talk to him.

    Wait - I’m a Philly boy - check it- Ryan Howard hit a shit ton of homers -- it was his INJURY- after that- he just wasn’t the same… The contract- well- he didn’t get paid shit for his prime - so like Jordan - he got big bucks to make up for it is the way I look at it- hell we haven’t won since 93 - only regret is that Kalas died and the Phil’s should’ve won at least 2 chips

    As a Phillies fan, I watched every game of Ryan Howard’s career. He was exposed by the Yankees in the 2009 World Series where they pitched him curveball/sliders away. He would never put up monster numbers after that in his career as you knew they would pitch him low and away when he had 2 strikes (then they started pitching him curveballs low and inside). That is also when they started putting the shift on him and I believe it messed with his head (you lose those bloop singles to right field so your average plummets). The final straw was the Achilles injury in 2011 playoffs and he was never the same as he had a hitch when he would run the bases. From 2005-2009, the ‘Big Piece’ was definitely Babe Ruth-like and will be beloved for the 2008 World Series Championship.

    Only Philly fans don’t like their own players. Phillies coaching staff got exposed. I vividly remember after his first at bat they weren’t going to give him fastballs. Howard didn’t make an adjust til about the fourth game. If he knew what they was doing like figured out Bankees would’ve had eggs on their face. It’s called counter scouting.

    I remember watching him spring training 2005 and after the last game of ST yelling something like "way to make the team Ryan Howard" - man those early years he was special. BUT - him choking under pressure just got to me too much and got off his band wagon. In the end he is just an over paid slugger IMO

    Even at the time the extension was moronic. He had two years (including 2010) left of team control. Then add onto the fact that sluggers with long swings like Howard (who was 30 in 2010) tend to age absolutely horribly, and it was an awful idea from the start,
