Such a beautiful song. Ryan makes it feel more personal here, singing in almost whispered hushes, compared to in the Whiskeytown days. Listening to the lyrics, I ask you, KZread viewers: what (or who) is the "ghost" from which our dear Ryan finds himself running away? Is the ghost a memory of someone? A fear he's trying to avoid facing? Furthermore, what exactly is happening in 16 days? I know there are lots of crowd-sourced opinions, but what has Ryan actually said about what the song is about?

If you like this, check out Jason Isbell. Was with Drive By Truckers, then with his band, The 400 Unit. Unbelievable talent. They remind me of each other - the wear-it-on-your-sleeve honesty.
@roberthanley8660
8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Kier - I've been a DBT/Isbell fan for a long time.... RA fan for even longer. Saw Isbell w/ the 400 Unit in Orlando a while back with about 20 people and was so confused at the lack of people there (this was during his drinking days).. man has that changed. I've seen him several times since and always a huge crowd. I had wanted to hear Isbell solo-acoustic since his DBT days because I felt he would be unbelievable. I was fortunate enough to see him open for RA in San Diego during an RA tour and was blown away, especially when he sang Alabama Pines. I'd venture to say I enjoyed his set more than Ryan's, and that's hard for me ;). His albums following that have been unbelievable. Got to see him and his amazing wife play with RA at the Ryman not too long ago too. He's right up there with Ryan in my book, close 2nd of course ;).

They're actually pretty good friends. Ryan was apparently a friend to Jason when he was getting sober. Isbell wrote Chaos and Clothes about Ryan's divorce from Mandy Moore. I've seen Isbell and Adams play together live once, but it's happened more than a few times based on the videos on KZread. Two lyrical heavyweights. Would STRONGLY recommend checking out Joe Pug's entire catalog if you're into this. Also, American Aquarium and the frontman, BJ Barham's solo record. Also, Justin Townes Earle.

I hope other people feel the same way about Ryan Adams as I do. Some of his songs are honestly so perfect for me that I physically can't bring myself to explain the sheer emotion that overcomes me when I hear his voice. Sometimes it's joy, being so amazed at the flawless music. But do you find yourselves listening to these songs on repeat and feeling hurt? If you do, stop listening to this stuff and branch out. Listen to early hip-hop, some Soundgarden and throw in some reggae ffs. Live life!

16 days....I adore this song. consummate artist!
What a song.
I mean, of course. if you have 16 days...15 of those are nights...but putting that in a song makes you brilliant.
That's how you write lyrics.

One of my faves by Mr.Adams
Best in the business.
Man, I can’t get enough of this song. Or of Whiskeytown and Adams for that matter.

So fucking great! Got the chills. DAMN
If only Whiskeytown could've lasted longer. I suppose we maybe wouldn't have gotten much of Ryan's solo stuff, which is absolutely incredible, but Faithless Street and Strangers Almanac remain as Ryan's best work IMO.
Thanks so much, has been forever since I heard this one kinda made my eyes wet from :)
thats some jacket!

What a prolific singer, song writer. Reminds me of a modern day Neil Young.

+jupiterfire05 Here are the lyrics... Got sixteen days One for every time I've gone away One for every time I should have stayed Should have wore my wedding ring Got sixteen days Fifteen of those are nights Can't sleep when the bed sheet fights It's way back to your side Well, the ghost has got me runnin' Well, the ghost has got me runnin' Away from you, away from you, away Well, the ghost has got me runnin' Well, the ghost has got me runnin' Away from you, away from you, away Got sixteen days Got a bottle and a rosary God, I wish that you were close to me I guess I owe you an apology Got sixteen days Fifteen of those are nights Can't sleep when the bed sheet fights It's way back to your side Well, the ghost has got me runnin' Well, the ghost has got me runnin' Away from you, away from you, away Well, the ghost has got me runnin' Well, the ghost has got me runnin' Away from you, away from you, away Old tin cups, little paper dolls All wrapped up in ribbons bows and hearts Old tin cups and little paper dolls All wrapped up in the ribbons of your heart I got sixteen days Sixteen days I got sixteen days It's like a fool I am
