    I didn't understand the point of these videos for a while, but what you're basically getting at is that compression is almost pointless to worry about. Worrying only gets you caught up in the weeds. Take care of your car as much as you can, but more than anything enjoy it as much as possible while you got it. It's gonna blow someday, it'll lose compression someday, it'll be gone someday, and those are things you cannot avoid no matter how much you sit there worrying about how long your car's motor has left. Premix, change your oil, drive it like you stole it and simply enjoy it.

    Coils and the starters themselves are key things. Mazda made like 6 updates to the starters over the 8’s life.

    i mean realistically there were 3 versions. crappy 11 tooth in 04-05, better 13 tooth one in 06-08, and then the S2 14 tooth from 09-11

    Something that massively affects start ups(hot or cold) is crap on the eccentric shaft sensor and dirty MAF sensors can be the difference between night and day

    I had 125k miles on my 04, did a seafoam clean, and replaced the plugs and coils after the seafoam caked them and blew the coils on a hot start. Eventually, I installed a 2.2kW starter last year at 152k miles and hot starts are a thing of the past. At some point I'll compression test the engine once I get a tester for peace of mind.

    my 8 has 4.3 bar across all 6 faces and still hot starts, even though with a slight delay similar to your blue 8. It runs fine tho and i have never been stranded.. i think people put too much emphasis on compression numbers!

    I don't know how you are planning to do your hybrid engine, but I would love to see one with the rx8 side exhaust ports filled using only the rotor housing ports. I have read anecdotes of people saying Japanese tuners did this with good results, but I've never actually seen anyone try it or an article about said tuners.

    I bought 2004 Rx8 recently with 140k km (around 80k miles), have no idea of compression as I live in small country and there is only one mechanic that does rotary and he imported this Rx8 and sold it to me so, so I have no ability to check compression and I don't really care. Car starts great cold and hot, runs and drives great and I am happy with it and I enjoy every second in it as it is sooo fun and enjoyable car that I will maybe by another one, just in case as they are quite rear in my area (EU)

    Haha exact same situation as my 8. Blew up my clutch revving while parked. Engine is good (~100 psi) but now my trans, clutch, flywheel, and headers are toast. Did you replace the rear iron or are you running with missing bolts? Or did you just weld the bolt holes back on?

  • @paulvernon4160
    @paulvernon4160Ай бұрын

    Unfortunately Mazdas figures are just an arbitrary cut off point, where an engine would get replaced under warranty(although the warranty period is now over anyway) above a certain level and the warranty would be declined, below it and you would get a replacement engine. They had to set the line somewhere and what you see on the graphs is it. Personally I would be happy with 5.5 bar upwards, some porting can affect compression figures on a freshly rebuilt engine

    how come you don't hold the throttle pedal to the floor while compression testing? My engine is starting to go downhill at 132K kilometers and my compression numbers are mid 70's on all faces both rotors, maybe I should do another test without pushing the throttle down? I come from growing up with dirt bikes/snowmobiles where you need to have open throttle for proper numbers

    I have extremely low compression on mine (it was reading simialr to the blue rx-8 when i got mine done, between 5.2 and 5.7 bar across all faces on both rotors) but it starts fine cold and actually even better when hot which is weird to me. Only issue with it is that _sometimes_ the idle is extremely rough and it'll stall out. Still trying to figure out what that is - suspecting vacuum leak but if anyone else has any ideas do let me know! (Have replaced sparks)

    If you need a faster starter motor, you won't find better than the WOSP starter motor, cranks the engine at around 370rpm, pretty sure you won't find a faster starter.

    Took my 8 to its first track day last weekend- have a Mishimoto radiator, and mods to kick the fans on sooner, and a lower temp thermostat. The car overheated two laps in on every session - gauge indicated 225-230 and I’d have to slow down and go to half-throttle to cool it off. How the hell do you track your 8 without it constantly overheating?
